What breaks my heart the most is they wrote the most covered song of all time (and so much more) and they both died penniless. Stan Polley should have got a life sentence for what he did.

Willswalkingwest yes but there are worse. Look closely at the Beatles. Their manager mismanaged them too. It was only when Lennon asked iF they are millionaires yet did they understand that some money are missing, and the worst of ALL, MICHAEL JACKSON OWNS their music..the Beatles dont own their copyrights, they have to ask permission fr Jackson to use their songs Every band had bad issues one way or another but they per sister..the eAgles, nirvana etc

Great video Fil! I have some great inside info on Badfinger and Pete Ham. When my wife was 17, a few weeks before her 18th birthday she went to see Badfinger on their first American tour in November 1970. They played a small club called The Bull and Heifer, the building is still there and a 5 minute walk from our home. She was accompanied by her older sister and her friends. My wife caught the attention of Pete early that evening and he came over to introduce himself to her when they went on break. Pete invited my wife, her sister and friends to a party after the show at their hotel with the band and crew, Bill Collins....... it was all very well mannered and innocent, mellow evening. Pete was a true gentleman and didn’t pull any rockstar type moves on my wife. She said they all were very well mannered and not one of them got out of line. They had another show the next night and invited my wife and everyone to come that show in Ithaca NY where Cornell university is located. It’s about a 40 minute drive from our location. Needless to say it was a memorable evening and they had some good conversations on the way back from the gig. Everyone rode in the back of the back of a large rental van back to the hotel. My wife and Pete said their goodbyes, and sadly never got to see him again. She did get a lot of photos from the two days which hang in our living room to this day in a collage type frame with photos and notes on napkins and such. Pete gave my wife a hat that he wore on stage those gigs. That hat can be seen in many photos and videos of Pete before he gave it to her. She still has it packed away. She went to see Badfinger in 1989 with her sister, she got to sit and talk with Joey and Mike who were still playing together at that time. She gave them copies of all the photos from 1970. There was a documentary DVD about their sad story released in the 90’s. As we sat down and watched it for the first time my wife suddenly spoke up and said, “ that’s my picture ! “ we paused it and sure enough it was a picture of her and Pete side by side, but sadly they cropped my wife’s face from the photo. We could see her hair still in one spot and could compare it to the photo that was hanging a few feet away in the room. It was the photo she’d given to Joey and Mike. She belongs to Badfinger fan page on Facebook and gets asked questions from a lot of fans who never got to see Pete in person. Just a few weeks ago a young man from Scotland called via Facebook and was asking her questions about Pete, I spoke with him a bit too. So cool these young people dig their music. We went to see Joey play last year and I had the pleasure to speak with him and talk music a bit. Nice guy, still played pretty good and sang well being in his mid seventies. A lot more to the story but I was thrilled when I saw this video you did on them pop up. I just got done watching and my wife called me in to the living room and said one of her friends from the Badfinger page sent her the link to your video. I told her I was just about to tell her about it but her friend beat me to it. Thought I’d share that little bit of history of Badfinger with you.

Great band! Bad luck. The Beatles were breaking up. The Beatles had bad contracts and were fighting each other for money and hired a manager who was screwing them. The label wasn't managed properly. So nobody was looking out for Badfinger. So many artist were screwed by the system. Shame none of the ex-Beatles ever did a damn thing for Badfingers families. McCartney is a billionaire he most of all could have done something. Even in the 90's he secretly negotiated a higher share of money from EMI behind Harrison's and Starr's back. Guess Paul needs all the pounds and dollars he can get!! Badfinger left us with some great power pop songs. Shame they never benefited financially from all there hard work and talent. Good reason they named there last apple album "ASS"!! Straight Up is just a great album with 2 great hits Day After Day and Baby Blue!! I highly recommend it!! Between the several producers Emerick, Harrison and Rundgren along with interference by Phil Spector and Badfingers american label it's a miracle it's as good as it is!!

I also felt The Beatles could have done more to help. They were mighty pissed about their own contracts but they still had enough money that they could have eased the situation for individual members of Badfinger, especially by the early 1980's.

I instantly thought of McCartney when I saw that guy on the left. I mean, not just his face but the mannerisms and the camera look. I'll bet you he watched a little Beatles in his day. "music industry". that's a euphemism for well.. I shant say it. Remember Napster? I loved that. Had the "industry" $hitting their pants. Just looked at a pic of Stan P. I knew he'd be ..... you know. Just like you thought he'd be. Along with Warn-A-Bruthah. Bunch of criminals. Too bad he lived to be 87. I cannot tolerate sneaky, thieving, scheming a$$holes. Sorry, but that kind of stuff just makes me want to enforce justice but... I haven't the power nor is there much justice in this craphole world we now live in. TRUMP! MASS SHOOTINGS! COPS! THE SKY IS FALLING! Great performance by the band. Never knew much about them or their songs but I do remember this one. Thx, Fil.

Fil, I feel that you haven't quite done their talent justice. Pete Ham and Evans wrote "Without you" which has been covered by superstars such as Harry Nilsson [the version most people have heard] , Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Stan Polley was a skilled conman who had fooled smarter people than Badfinger; they were just nice music guys who trusted people too much. Indeed, Pete Ham said that he could not live on anymore because Stan ruined Ham's ability to trust anyone; Ham lost all belief that the world was worth living in anymore. They even made a song "Hey Mr Manager" just for themselves as an expression of their pain at Stan screwing them over. Another aspect of the internet is that a manager who had creamed artists would get a reputation these days. But as Pete Ham said: the guys had no idea that he had already ripped off other bands. Thanks for doing this one. Rock!

Thank you so much for posting this. In all the tragic stories in rock music, what happened to Badfinger might be the most tragic of them all. They certainly had it all - musical skills, good looks, songwriting ability, good harmonies. Apple chose well when they signed them. My understanding is that the whole band and their wives lived together in a house and the wives knew what Stan was doing but Pete Ham refused to believe it until it was too late. Sadly, he decided to end his life shortly after he came to that realization. According to the band, the bass player never did get over Pete's death and killed himself so he could be with him again. As I said, the Badfinger story may be the saddest of them all.

Badfinger played at my wife's high school. I've never decided if that was cool or sad. I'm not sure what year the concert was but she graduated in '73. So, i lean towards too cool. I don't want to embarrass her about it, with my uncertainty. Edit: She made out with the lead singer, her words. She's never lied to me before, I have no reason to doubt her now. Hell, I would have made out with Buck Dharma, though neither of us are gay, just sayin'! It's simply hero worship! The concert has been confirmed by hundreds of people, I'm 7 years younger than my wife, so I was dragged out as a pretty thing at her reunions. (I'm a dude if you had figured, lol)

I don't know why but I always put them together with the Raspberries a group out of Cleveland Ohio (I think) they were popular around the same time and they and Bad Finger I would hear on the radio ' 72 -'73, had an 8 track tape of no dice and wore it out. Pete Ham was one of the greatest talents ever! I never understood why the BEATLES never helped them when they needed it! The group was their first signed to APPLE and they had so many hits and were just getting started but had no help and with their scum bag cheater agent they were penniless. Pete and Tom Evans both hanged themselves (Pete in 1975 and Tom in 1983). and they were co-writers to one of the greatest ballads ever written WITHOUT YOU with the chorus written by TOM and the verse written by PETE! Put them together and you get one of the greatest collaborations in history! RIP PM - RIP TE - and RIP Mike Gibbons their drummer! Great work again FIL!

In '72 when I was 14, I wasn't clued into the industry, I just dug great music and Badfinger were in a chorus of amazing groups and performers. In the years since, I've discovered the destructive exploitation by unscrupulous managers and executives that was a reality for many bands back then. Baby Blue was my favorite song of theirs. Not only did they neglect to hire an attorney; not a single member of their band even considered that they needed an attorney. They were that naive. A court might have ruled the contract void and awarded them a judgment against Stan, on the grounds that contract provisions were unconscionable and that there was never any "meeting of the minds" because the band was misled, in regard to what they were signing.

When I first heard Day After Day, I thought is was one of the best Paul McCartney performances ever. Silly me. Many people do not realize that Nilsson's Without You was written by Badfinger Evans and Ham. Nilsson, a song writer himself, having written Three Dog Night's "One" had covers as two of his biggest hits. Come And Get It was written by Paul McCartney. All of the members of Badfinger were song writers. Publishing royalties typically brings in a LOT more money than record sale royalties. The trick is to own your own publishing company. There is a REASON why it is call the music BUSINESS.
