I knew exactly where the flip to head voice was going to be because I know the song inside out (well how it sounds at least). I love that you pointed it out and explained it! Jeff did this in several songs like Confusion, Summer and Lightning, Rockaria, Shangri-La and Telephone Line(a lot in the last two- very impressive and gives the songs a melancholy) and others. I think it serves the songs well when he chooses to do it. He has great instincts it seems. I love classic and other rock and other genres as much as anyone but ELO/Jeff Lynne has a special place in my heart. It's endlessly fascinating to me to watch someone play a guitar, especially when they're explaining what they're doing. I'm watching lots of yours now, of course, but I've watched hours and hours of others play, like SRV, EVH and others teaching some riff or another. Never played a single note. Watch I won't ever be able to either. Hah! Needless to say, this was very interesting to see you play and explain what Jeff's doing. Thanks, Fil!

Spot on analysis and great demo Fil as always! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦

I've always felt that Jeff Lynne was the 5th and best Beetle. He was smart to stay out of the limelight and focus on making music. And he kept on creating beautiful magical music long after they collapsed and fell into disillusionment. His music is raptorous and uplifting like none other - a wall of vibration that moves through you. He knows how to make some very special strange magic!

I particularly like the versions of "Telephone Line" and "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" from this session. While it's nice to hear it stripped down with just the Piano and guitar, I think the real revelation here is Jeff's voice. It is right on the money with no studio trickery needed.

Thanks for your analysis Fil. The first ELO track that really got me listening was "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" from way back in the last century. Jeff Lynne's approach to music is just the whole package. If you really want to appreciate how good the man is at his craft, just play his "Concerto For A Rainy Day" (which is four songs and includes "Mr. Blue Sky") from ELO's album "Out Of The Blue". I think it is side 3 of the vinyl double album. And listen with headphones to get the full effect of Jeff's production work. Jeff has worked with some of the best in the business including Tom Petty, Travelling Wilburys etc. He leaves his musical "thumbprint" on all the projects he works on. He also worked with Joe Walsh on Joe's last solo album "Analog Man". Great analysis Fil! Stay safe and well.

Fil like it was said before in a previous comment...Jeff did this dry in his living room and you don't hear the guitar because Jeff wanted Richard's Piano playing to be the only instrument you hear with his superb voice. In this clip Jeff used his guitar simply as a prop. This was not an official recording. It was made for a documentary about the life of Jeff Lynne by the BCC...Shot in 2012 at his house in LA. Well done mate!

Jeff wanted Richard's piano playing to be the main feature with his singing. He used his guitar just as a prop (something to hold on to)... This was performed in his living room in LA and was not meant to be recorded. It was shot for the brilliant 2012 BBC Documentary Mr. Blue Sky: "The Story Of Jeff Lynne". Jeff Lynne is a fantastic singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, he will be 74 this December 30th, 2021. Amazing!

I am not a musician, but for some reason, when you demonstrate the chords, they remind me of Pink Floyd, wonder why. Anyway, the videos of Jeff and Richard clearly show one thing: if you strip ELO of both the orchestra and the electric, it doesn't diminish the songs or lessen them in any significant way: what remains is just pure bright light.

Did you ever analyze the Hollies' "Look Through Any Window"? If you haven't and you do, try listening with the right channel off. Early days of stereo recording, all the vocals are on the right, all the instruments on the left. Even without vocals, the music track is amazing. Drums and bass so tight, overall feel amazing. And the recording - amazing considering how it would have been miked and on what it would have been recorded.

During the musical intro and after each verse try using the F shaped G, for 2 bar's of G 4 beats to C min 4 beats alternately then when the vocal's start change to G to G Augmented triad on the high strings, for the run down use your pinky to sus the note leading to what I call F6 to E min. For the ending play out the same as the intro. I hope it makes sense to you.

They're actually tuned to 455Hz in this entire session. I've been trying to find out why. In no other Jeff Lynne recording do I find him playing in anything other than 440. My only theory here is that the great composers, like Beethoven, tuned to 455; a 1/4 step up from 440 (remember 440 is quite modern). Perhaps the piano was tuned thereto, and tuning a guitar is easier than tuning a piano. Or maybe the recording was accidentally sped up somehow. I don't know, but it is DEFINITELY in A=455Hz. No capo necessary. I didn't watch the full video. Maybe you covered this. I've just been trying to find out why the Bungalow session was in 455.

If you watch the whole set Jeff's vocal is superb, but he might as well have not bothered with the acoustic. The condensor mic was not made proper use of. If you watch his strumming it isn't clean regular sweeps across all the strings but more like partial nibbles across 2 or 3 strings. He does this on stage too, barely playing acoustic or electric. He even changed the key of showdown from C min to A min. I don't think he likes playing bar chords.

Such a confusing explanation. You start by naming the chords by their shape, with the first fret capo, and then for no reason, you refer to them by what they actually are. (G/Aflat for example) There is a much simpler way to go through the changes.
