I’m convinced Wink has a literal vault of game show pilots and ancient game show episodes.

Clint Holmes hosted "Campus All-Star Challenge", a quiz show involving historically black colleges on BET in the early 1990s, resembling the classic show "College Bowl". In 1974, he hit the Top 40 with the song, "Playground In My Mind".
@TheRogersrevue093 жыл бұрын
Actually, HCASC is not just resembling the College Bowl, its made by the same company - just solely for HBCUs
@Ian165453 жыл бұрын
Don't forget he also hosted _Winfall_ (another pilot that didn't get a chance) back in '88.

Looked silly at first, but it grew on me. The front game prohibits a "Jeopardy!"-type runaway, and the bonus adds pressure by memorizing the pattern.
@cliveoflegend15423 жыл бұрын
Really good fun! Can see why it wouldn't have been picked up in the '90s, but I'd happily watch this over just about any other pick-from-the-board quiz out there.

A very interesting concept. I like how the tie the leader question is random, and everyone can play for it. The initial concept worked well on block busters. I think a limitation of only allowing 30 point questions to be asked after one 20 point question would be a better touch. The bonus game reminds me of Strike It Rich's bonus game, and a plus for that is they get the sneak peak to see the pattern. A good memory can counter act random chance, and make it easier for some people to win it. My only complaint is the pressure point question. I think instead of the 60 second overtime, the question should be tossed to the other contestants to try, in order of point total. That's my only complaint, but it is a very good show concept.

The only other show I know that lets contestants tie the leader with one question is Chain Letters (UK)

The big showdown sort of did, the rule there was you couldn't go over the "payoff point" so you could lock the leader out temporarily and catch up.

@24:43 Watching this, I wondered who were the EPs on this. Hearing a familiar double buzz, I thought Goodson. But, instead, I find out the EPs helped fill the original TNN with lots of hours of game shows, talent shows, talk shows, and more.
@johnbergman21973 жыл бұрын
I would give this one a 9 out of 10. I really like both the main game and the bonus game. If there was two things I would change is that first; get rid of that pressure point question and go on to the 60 second sprint round and second; have it as 10 questions to win instead of 12.
@haiti2223 жыл бұрын
Thanks, a very cool pilot.
@digiblader13 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna guess this was for TNN - which Reid/Land Productions also did Fandango and Top Card..

At 7:07 the answer is, of course, just the opposite: Elizabeth Barret Browning wrote the words for her husband, poet Robert Browning; it's one of her Sonnets from the Portuguese. The initials should have been EBB.

Would have fit into the USA block of the mid 90s. But the name of this show doesn't match the theme at all imagine if this was on ABC prime time after Millionaire in 2001. Actual pressure. Dark set.

From this unsold American game show "Pressure Point" with host Clint Holmes, this is a March 1990 pilot episode. The three contestants competing are Peggy, Mark & Chris. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Great game! I'm disappointed this didn't get picked up. Maybe the bonus round needed to be 10 instead of 12. Either way, very good base game and bonus! This could have been a success! Good host too, he did a great job keeping things moving!

Thanks for uploading, as always! 5:56 - tie/take the lead is probably the worst game or game show mechanic ever invented. It held back Make the Grade (fire drills) and Merv Griffin's Crosswords (spoilers) because it's so unfair that one question can totally undo the entirety of someone's progress.

okay so I don't know exactly why this put me in mind of Caesar's Challenge. It fits the time period and so do the podiums and the back lighting--plus it's a word game. Somehow I want to think this was the precursor to that game, but don't have any definitive proof of that.

Pretty dull game, but decent bonus round (though the timer should probably be 90 seconds instead of 60). Name doesn’t really fit the show either. I will say though that the presentation is really good for a show taped in 1990. Looks similar to cable game shows during the second half of the ‘90s.

Could've also worked with a 75-second time limit...

Buzz-in sound would later be used on 100 Mexicanos Dijeron (Mexican Family Feud), albeit extended.

Clint did a pretty good job here! The game is a bit sedate, IMO. Maybe if they had a dragon pop out of one of the screens it’d be more exciting! 😉 Having seen Whew! and Millionaire, I didn’t think this format brought much pressure. But, still a nice piece of game show history, and I thank you again for sharing!

3 6 7 9 10 is easy enough to remember in the bonus round. 3 to 4 times in the 10 seconds.

The announcer sounds suspiciously like Jim McKrell. Was it him?
@drewconway71353 жыл бұрын
I can totally see why this didn’t get picked up. The front game is dull and the bonus round is too hard. Even if someone is flawless in picking in the bonus, it’s still 12 right answers in 60 seconds, which is all down to how fast the host can read and how long the questions are.
@henrymurphy33653 жыл бұрын
I thought Clint Holmes did a fine job of keeping the game moving. In less capable hands, it could've been a snoozefest. The main game was ok but far from groundbreaking. The bonus round was rather difficult considering the grand prize was just $5,000 (find 12 dollar signs AND answer the questions attached?). The bonus game on "Whew" was only 10 questions and that was for $25,000. All in all, not the worst pilot I've seen, but I can understand why it didn't get picked up.

The music sounds like it was by Mike Johnson and Allen Reid, who also did Reid/Land's TNN shows Fandango, Top Card, 10 Seconds, and You Can Be A Star. Does anyone know if this was true?

Impossible to even read and answer 12 of most of the clues in 60 seconds. But this was obviously rigged for the pilot.
The bonus game reminds me of Pitfall, you have to memorize a pattern and get hit with a penalty if you don't.
@ryanstrnad8442 Жыл бұрын
What year did this come out at? Looks like it was up for that big slew of new game shows and new hosts (some like Pat Finn, Patrick Wayne & Jonathon Prince) for that 1990-91 season which saw every one not make it to the next season.
@jeffboettcher2531 Жыл бұрын
This is sort of reminiscent of 'TKO', another pilot I watched a long time ago, believed to be one of Mark Goodson's last joints, and the pilot host was the one and only Peter Tomarken!! May they both be resting in peace.
