After watching this, for the first time I understand why you age slower near light speed. The quantum particles that make up your cells, which operate and age you, are having trouble "keeping up" with their relative quanta when you travel near the speed of light. But that begs the question, would they even operate in a way that would keep you alive near lightspeed?

Why would photons have to travel a much larger distance, if the laws of physics are same for a person travelling at a velocity close to c? The explanation is incomplete unless we talk about acceleration.
@mateocardoner8608
@mateocardoner8608 8 жыл бұрын
Because light, unlike any other thing, travels at the speed of light no matter what the speed of its source is. Therefore if the source of light is moving in the same direction as its light beam at half the speed of light, the light from the beam will not be travelling at 1.5x the speed of light, it will just be travelling at the speed of light. Therefore if your body is moving at a speed near the speed of light, the photon leaving point A to reach point B would take longer to reach point B than if you were merely walking, regardless if your body is accelerating or not.
@JatinSanghvi1
@JatinSanghvi1 8 жыл бұрын
Since both A and B are part of my body, whatever be the speed at which my body is moving, A and B are standing still with respect to each other. Distance between A and B is same, speed of light is same (actually constant), laws for still and moving bodies are same (see video), then why the times it takes to reach from A to B are different? Twin paradox results only while body is accelerating away from Earth and decelerating when coming back to Earth. Nothing happens once the body has stopped accelerating. So even if it's moving away at near-light speed from initial point (but without further acceleration), the age difference would stay same whether it keeps flying in that state for 1 year or 10 years. The explanation is not so simple. Without explaining effects of acceleration, it's impossible to explain the twin paradox. IMO, Ryan did pretty good job making dumb people think themselves intelligent but should that earn him scholarship?
@mateocardoner8608
@mateocardoner8608 8 жыл бұрын
Ok, yes from YOUR perspective A and B are stationary because your body is moving at a constant speed. So from your perspective photon going from A to B in your body takes the normal amount of time it should. But from someone elses perspective in a different inertial reference frame, they see your body moving at near speed of light and so the photon leaving A to B would take longer to get to B (because light travels at the speed of light no matter what reference frame) and therefore for the observer it will take the photon longer to get to B from A than for you. This is why he sees your clock run slower but you dont. With time dilation you dont realize that your time is being slowed down at all, its only when you look at someone elses frame of reference. And for the twin paradox, I agree its obviously not that simple but you do not need to be accelerating/decelerating for time dilation to occur.
@JatinSanghvi1

Hi Mateo, I may not be able to give a long thought to this subject. One problem I see is that in your example even I would see the other person aging slowly because he too is moving at a near light speed in opposite direction with respect to my inertial frame. In case of twin paradox, there should be no difference in age of two sisters since both moved away and towards each other at same speed at all times. Only difference that was there was one sister went through more acceleration than other one.
@mateocardoner8608
@mateocardoner8608 8 жыл бұрын
I don't know how we got to the twin paradox haha but yes you are right. If twin A gets on a spaceship and moves away from twin B they are both moving away from each others reference frame, but twin A experiences acceleration and deceleration when leaving earth and turning around to come back to earth. I think due to this acceleration that only twin A experiences, he/she will in fact be younger.

I'd never heard time dialation explained this way before, really excellent! It seems obvious now, you're going so fast, signals are travelling thousands of kms just to cross your body! Relativistic length contraction seems paradoxical tho...

Witty but the last part is not right. The same argument you make about photons in the astronaut's body as seen from Earth can be made about the photons in her twin sister's body as seen from the spaceship. So why doesn't the twin sister age just as slowly? The solution to the twin paradox is all in the two acceleration periods when the rocket takes off and returns.

Agreed. The video begins by stating that the laws of physics are the same in any two inertial frames of reference (*invariance*). Popcorn remains in bowl in backyard, as well as in uniformly moving car. To have internal video consistency, space traveler and earthling who are both moving inertially (albeit spaceship is faster), should have clocks and body processes that are the *same* for each. Unclear how to resolve the video's contradiction. Without a reasonable resolution to the self-conflict there should be no slowing of aging process experienced by space traveler. Additionally, as already expressed by Markus Meister, the "twin paradox" is not answered (under special relativity, which twin is moving near light speed?). Because *invariance* of laws of nature allows for no preferred frame of reference, near light speed travel, alone, is not enough to slow only the space traveler's time. Something more via explanation is needed. On a positive note, video provokes thought (while providing a confusing lesson), although its ultimate answer regarding how a twin returns younger than stay-at-home brother/sister is wanting. Cool graphics and lots of passion. Congrats on win.

Thomas Cooney you do understand this is not his theory. he was just asked to explain Einstein's theory of relativity, or that is what he chose to do. he did not say it is personal opinion, and this issue a citation of time dilation and twin paradox? Or have you read this with no understanding of it? .

It does seem to be paradoxical, but they’ve tested this via clocks moving at a relatively higher speed in earths orbit and they do in fact run slower than those on Earth. Completely see your point though, it doesn’t seem to make sense.

You didn't explain why the Quantum particles have to travel a farther distance when your body is traveling at near the speed of light. It sounds like it should be the same distance. I'm guessing it takes longer for the quantum particle to get there because its destination is moving away from it.

If the hypothetical 2D being was traveling near the speed of light with its surface vector parallel to the velocity, its bodily functions would happen at a different rate than if it was perpendicular, which is an easy way to explain why length contraction is needed.

1. This ignores another concept of dragged ether, if it moves along with Earth, it would still exist but without affecting the speed. 2. Even if it doesn't exist, the observer in the experiment is stationary. It doesn't answer if the observer was moving at near the lighspeed. 3. I fail to see the logic between the lack of medium and observers.

You gave a new explanation for time dilation which I had not heard before. But I'm not convinced. It raises many more questions though, which is also good. Beautifully made video, and I wonder how to get the technical know-how of how to make such videos with graphics so beautifully incorporated into the narrative. It must've taken a lot of time and effort, and it doesn't seem possible for one individual. The quality of the video is such that a team of professionals would be hard-pressed to match it!
