Lionel Hutz I served several years with the British army in Germany in Soest Hildershiem and Guttersloh and they were the best years of my life A great country and the German people are really nice once they get to know you.I miss my pomme frites and schnitzel so much !

Für mich persönlich hat zwar die jährliche Parade zum Nationalfeiertag Chiles (die Preußen Amerikas!) die Nase etwas vorn - aber immer, wenn ich Trooping the Colour fühle ich mich doch irgendwie bestärkt, dass zumindest einn paar der guten Werte des Alten Europa noch nicht im Untergang begriffen sind. ;)

How beautiful the German music is ! The Germans are genetically programmed to be great musicians. Nothing more incredibly beautiful than the music of their romantic masters : Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn-Bertholdy, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner. And Anton Bruckner, Austrian, still Germanic, the Strauß family, all of them, Joseph Lanner, Austrian also and though classic but a giant, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, also Austrian. ALL OF THEM GREAT. @about 14.10 the Rupert gave the wrong order (commentator was speaking over it). The look of anguish clearly visible on his face - despite bearskin and chinstrap! But, the troops "disobeyed him" and stood stock still, until he remembered to order the "change arms" before marching!!! Brilliant for such young, new recruits (mostly 18-19). Not for the first time a Subaltern rescued by his own men (possibly with some muttering from the sergeants).

When did he speak over it? He speaks every year exact the same, almost word for word. He would never dare to talk about a wrong order or any mishap unless somebody faints or so and he would not notice it too.

They did not disobey him and even if the Subaltern gave the wrong word of command, they would have obeyed and advanced without changing arms. The Subaltern 'rescued' himself. He said: 'Escort to the Colour will advance, by the centre,....' and didn't command the march yet. He just interrupted his wrong order and gave the right word of command.

The Russians and Chinese might march slightly better but the British have a proudest tradition and always will. It shows here in this video. The sun may have set of the British empire when at a point in time, it never set. Rolf Seelmann-Eggebert gibt nur das wieder, was er jedes Jahr sieht. Da sich die Märsche leider Gottes aber jedes Jahr ändern, erwähnt er die 'Neutral slow/quick marches' erst gar nicht. Das einzige was er erwähnt, ist dass die Grenadier Guards keine Welsh Guards sind und dass man das an der Formation der Knöpfe und der Feder in der Bärenfellmütze erkennen kann. Und nicht zu vergessen die Regimentsmärsche, die sich nicht ändern bzw. ändern werden, aber das hat man nach 40 Jahren auch auswendig gelernt ;) Trotzdem ist Rolf Seelmann-Eggebert ein großartiger Adelsexperte und weiß vermutlich mehr als jeder Durchschnittsdeutsche, aber für Leute wie mich, die die Parade auswendig kennen wirkt der Kommentator echt nervig. Leider gibt es hier in Deutschland keinen Kommentator-Mute-Button ^^

Ich verstehe überhaupt nicht, was dies hier mit Deutschland und Besetzung zu tun hat? Das sind Soldaten aus einer anderen Generation, so wie du wahrscheinlich auch aus einer Nachkriegs-Generation stammst. Und zum Thema Kolonialismus, was war eigentlich mit den Deutschen zu der Zeit? Waren die auch Unschuldslämmer? Waren die Briten die Aggressoren im 2. Weltkrieg? Es tut mir leid wenn ich deine Illusion von immernoch bestehender Feindschaft zwischen Deutschland und Großbritannien, den USA und den anderen Ländern zerstören muss... Am D-Day Jubiläum waren Soldaten von unterschiedlichen Ländern, die alle froh waren, dass die grausamen Kriege hinter ihnen liegen und sie nun friedlich miteinander leben können. Es tut mir Leid, aber der Begriff "Patriot" wird in Deutschland anscheinend fehlinterpretiert und auch an dir ist z.B zu sehen, wie sehr diese angeblichen "Patrioten" provozieren und die teilweise grausame Geschichte von Deutschland befürworten. Ich persönlich kann größtenteils auf die Geschichte Deutschlands nicht stolz sein. Außerdem war Deutschland genau so imperialistisch wie das UK es war und sind gnadenlos mitgezogen. Später haben sie dann einer Ideologie wegen Millionen von Menschen umgebracht, Bravo! Aber unsere Generation hat mit all jenem nichts mehr zu tun und das selbe gilt für in diesem Video auftretende Personen.

Ich schätze Seelmann-Eggebert für seine respektvolle, kenntnisreiche Adelsberichterstattung ebenfalls sehr - neben dem mittlerweile leider verstorbenen Hans-Heinrich Isenbart meiner Meinung nach der letzte Grandseigneur im Deutschen Fernsehen. Und über Adelsgeschichte weiss er wahrscheinlich sogar mehr als alle Klatschblattjournalisten und Geschichtswissenschafts- B.A.ler des aktuellen Kalenderjahres zusammen. Wahrscheinlich hänge ich deshalb (und vielleicht auch aufgrund der Tatsache, dass ich seit mindestens 15 Jahren treuer Trooping-Zuschauer bin) die "Latte" ein bisschen höher. Die Pressebroschüre zu den jeweiligen Paraden ist immer sehr ausführlich, irgendwie ist da bei mir halt immernoch die Hoffnung drin, dass er mal ein bisschen daraus in die Übertragung einbaut (ein bisschen mehr als nur die jeweils aktuellen Deployments als Unterstreichung der Tatsache, dass die Guards weiterhin aktive Combat Troops sind), die zuverlässig "auf Autopilot" läuft. Mute-Button wäre in der Tat was Feines, gerade bei den Öffentlich-Rechtlichen. Insbesondere auch bei diversen Sportübertragungen, imho. ;)

Ian Robertson I am ex forces as well and a musician at that and done numerous Passing Out Parades including for the Light Division and they definitely have a quicker quick march (140 steps to the minute compared to 120 of the rest of the Army), slow march of 100 steps to the minute instead of the 80 of the rest of the Army and the double march of 180 steps to the minute

Some of the guards uniform style like the cuff decoration and the style of shoulder lapel was worn by German Wehrmacht grenadiers. Is this style German originally, possibly Hanoverian ?

Not so typically German, actually: This "pointy" cuff style is known as the "Neuchatel Cuff", in Germany - the only outfit that wore it during the Second Empire was, if I recall it correctly, the Guards Rifles - an especially interesting little battalion of light infantry. They originally hailed from the (Protestant) principality of Neuchatel in Switzerland, which the kings of Prussia used to rule in personal union until Napoleon got his hands on it. All other infantry of the German states wore the "straight" Brandenburg Cuffs or the "low" Swedish Cuffs.

Uniform fashions cross national borders like all clothing fashions do. Bandsmen wear red and white shoulders, cuffs have fake buttons and lace in colours, the linings of jackets shown by 'turnbacks' have faded away, though. This Army has fought more wars than all the worlds armies combined be they ancient are modern world. Fact. Since 1945 they have fought more wars than most other none british empire/commwealth Army has in there entire history. They are the 2nd best paid in the world after Australia another really great Army based upon British traditions and training and their own traditions also. The guards do just 2 additional weeks ceremonial drill training but otherwise they undergo the same 26 week combat infantrymans course has all other British Infantry regiments other than the Parachute Regiment which doeas 30 weeks. The royal navies corps of royal marines commados do 33 weeks. After that there is far more additional training.

that song they were playing in 1:47 is a song of the protestant reformation its a christian hymn, called "a mighty fortress is our God" . I love that song. the protestant reformer Martin Luther wrote that song.

Actually, the march they played is French and it is called Les Huguenots. Although, you are not entirely wrong, as a part of the march does bear a great resemblance to the song you are referencing, possibly meaning that that part of Les Huguenots was written with that song in mind.

Auf Minute 13:56 bis 14:11 sieht man, wie der kommandierende Offizier einen Fehler macht: Er kommandiert: "Escort for the colour will advance - by the center …", bemerkt dann seinen Fehler, verzieht schmerzhaft das Gesicht und kommandiert dann richtig: "Change - arms!", um danach wieder, und dann ebenfalls richtig, neu mit "Escort for the colour will advance - by the center - slooooow - march!" fortzufahren.

As a former soldier and sailor trained to high British standards I must say the lines were very poor. The officers not able to hold swords 'properly' In our time 25 years ago the RSM and parade commander would be beside themselves..BUT the Queen looked pleased.. or has she learnt to accept lower standards?

During a war, the Guards have only a few days to get ready for ceremonials: it's amazing they can do something like this with such little preparation. Served in the RAF and was called upon to parade in a small way, platoon strength, for heads of state who came through our airfield (most weeks), we usually had a day to prepare, and usually didn't embarrass ourselves. Around the time of Prince Charles' and Lady Diana's wedding it got quite frenetic. It was an extra duty, not my profession, which was mapmaking and printing.

Jim Rathbun I too have noticed the modern Army and guards infantry regiments are not has strict with keeping straight lines has they were 20 to 25 years ago.Standards have dropped. Rest assured though that their fighting quality standards certainly have not.

The Russians and Chinese march on tarmac or concrete. These guards who are all veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, are marching on loose gravel which takes much more skill as one wrong move means you end up on your arse. The British Army has proper soldiers who want to do the job and not the brain washed conscripted toy soldiers of Russia and China.
