Ehhhh... Kinda misses the point though. There's a difference between "he must be right because he has a degree" and "how much can you actually know if you haven't formally studied it." Shapiro is great at rattling off fallacies and snappy comebacks but truthfully, beyond a few claps from the audience, that statement itself is bullshit. EDIT: Notice the guy below me talks "people who’ve taught themselves computer programming and languages without any formal study." Shapiro didn't say he taught himself, which could be valid, he said it's a "BS field." The guy below me made a better point than Shapiro did. Because Shapiro is a moron that appeals to even dumber morons.
@Handsomeanthony685 жыл бұрын
Bub Dub you can not formally study and still know a shit ton. I personally know people who’ve taught themselves computer programming and languages without any formal study. That aside, Shapiro got his law degree from Harvard. I think he’d be capable of critically reading a soft science study. They’re not particularly difficult (I say that as a “hard science” major)
@Handsomeanthony685 жыл бұрын
Bub Dub additionally, you may have missed the point he made, which was “don’t use the argument from authority”. Attack his positions based on facts, not on his lack of a BS degree. If he doesn’t know anything, he’ll be torn to shreds easily.
@amazingbait265 жыл бұрын
@@Handsomeanthony68 But he misused "appeal to authority." There's a difference between "this guy is correct because he has a PhD" and "on what basis are you making your statements?" Since no context is given in this video, I don't know what Ben was talking about. However, the ability to select and interpret a study does not make one an expert in that field. Asking what authority Ben has doesn't constitute an argument itself, but it's a good question to ask if you want to know how much the person actually knows about the topic. Especially when it comes to a soft science which may be more subjective in its findings and up for debate.
@Handsomeanthony685 жыл бұрын
Bub Dub I see what you’re saying. But in society, a degree does confer a level of authority. You can’t practice medicine without a PhD, you can’t practice law without a JD, and so on. Context is missing from this clip, but I’d be willing to bet that Ben did cite the sources he used (as he does in pretty much every speech I’ve ever seen him do) and the kid is simply saying “you don’t have a PhD so you’re not qualified to have an opinion”.

@@raydarable with degrees like sociology, yes you learn and gain an understanding about sociology, psychology, and history, but the main skill you will take away from that will be how to research and analyse, and present your findings. to be a sociologist is to simply be a researcher that focuses on sociology. think about when he mentioned welding. what do you think of when someone says "expert welder"? probably someone who knows how to weld very well. think about who an "expert sociologist" would be. to me, an expert sociologist would be someone who who has studied a lot of sociology, what does that mean? they have read a lot of books and understand facts. another thing i would assume about an "expert sociologist" is that they are very good at research, analyzing, and reporting their findings. i would find those research and publishing skills to be the most standout part of an "expert sociologist". an expert sociologist would merely be an expert researcher. since with those skills, they could study fields other than sociology and their work would be just as high quality. degrees like sociology, psychology, and political science dont really give you the skills to be a psychologist or sociologist (you need to get a masters or doctorate), they give you the skills you needed to learn to earn that degree, and an understanding of that field of study (studying, paper/report writing, critical thinking). these skills can be used for many jobs, but the knowledge not as much. this is why psych/sociology degrees are sometimes made fun of, most graduates of this degree end up in various office jobs that have nothing to do with psych, but a lot with the skills they learned in order to earn that degree. contrast this with a welding technology degree, the skills they learn are reading blueprints, some math and science, and above all, welding. a much more specialized field with less transferable skills. so bascially, he doesnt consider sociology an expert field because some researcher that specializes in studying anything could also study sociology and offer comparable work to a sociologist, since they would know how to use the scientific method to research and report their research (sociology and psychology are soft sciences since they cant be 100% objective e.g comparing mineral contents vs the contents of what someone is thinking, one is testable, one isnt)

@@mohammadrahman1722 Not really, you are assuming the person who has the certificate has fully done the course by themselves. A certificate for ANYTHING only gets you through the door. Then you need to do the work & prove yourself. Many certificates awarded in third-world countries are awarded on MONEY paid not ability. The rich just give a packet of money to the teacher or lecturer. These days it is more subtle. I have seen people who have "a Degree is physics" but can be pulled apart in two seconds of conversation. Only way to trust a certificate, check its number & validity & then check the person. In the UK, the IELTS awards English language certificates. I've heard of people arrested for issuing IELTS through a fake candidate. The Chinese girl just turned up in the place of another girl. She even went to the extent to have a fake merged picture passport. She was arrested but MANY get through this way. Some student rely on essay banks, pay people money to pass them. Others rely on favour, just a person or group they know to help fake for them. So, don't be so naive to trust a certificate UNLESS it is proven. Also, it is an Ad hominem argument. CERTIFICATES mean NOTHING. I have had that same foolish person with a so called degree in physics (not checked) state punctuation in language is useless & not needed. How DUMB can you get? Also, slow thinking & has 0 responsibility. DOING & PROVING , mean everything. In a system with so many pieces of corruption, it's near impossible to trust anything said unless it is backed with OBSERVABLE EVIDENCE. So, no, until the clear skill is observed, a certificate means, 0.

It could. If University's are what they are supposed to be. A college is where you go to learn a field of study. A university is where you go to debate thise study's. People who go to university to learn a field are retarded. University's that teach fields of study instead if debate of said study's are also retarded and are just overpriced colleges. Debate leads to common sense because common sense is the ability to see logic and debate helps build those logic "muscles"
@shovelguggelheim84544 жыл бұрын
The one big problem with Universities is that the people that are doing the teaching have rarely spent a single day in the real world. All their teaching is from books rather than from experience. It should be illegal for anyone to teach in higher education that has not excelled in that field. We need more people in the twilights of their careers giving back by teaching.

Ben was spot-on when he said "“I don’t need a 7 year degree to know bullshit when I hear it." Critical thinking, being... the ability to dissect and reason for or against a particular point of view or to challenge the acceptance or an understanding of it, is the essence of individual thought and debate. Academia is an indoctrination institution of talking-points, group think and a herd mentality. You are taught to be offended by anyone who dare questions the prophets of academia.... the oracles who profess the gospel of social justice; the supreme arbiters of truth, knowledge and enlightenment. Indeed, these brainwashed products of academia are void of wisdom, experience and adulthood. They were taught NOT to think or be critical.... just to listen, believe and know only what they are lectured/told. Academia constructs a false-reality into the minds of our children that does not reflect the real world. Academia is supposed to prepare students to become self-aware, critical thinking individuals and free-will decision makers... NOT programmed talking-points zombies(useful idiots) to be exploited and used for the political ambitions/expediency of others. aka: sheep.

Ben did skillfully slap down the questioner. I would have liked to have heard Ben point out that, if you are going to accept statements only from those that have a degree in a particular field, then why is it that those that have the same degrees argue the merits of each other's statements. In other words, two people, with the same degree, who disagree with each other. It happens all the time. Why ever consider getting a second opinion from a doctor? The doctor has a degree, so he/she must be correct, and all other doctors with the same degree, by extension, must all agree with each other. So although a degree is well and good, it is not the end all say all.

Cool Breeze You seem to have a lot of disrespect for anyone who DOESN’T have a college education, thus proving my point. Since you MISSED my point, I’ll “splain” it to you. Plenty of people are smart without a college education and have the ability to do things a college ”smarty pants” never learned. They have life experience and practicality. Depending on the area, most of college is “theory”. Learning theory is good and has its place. It makes you think; it takes you outside of your little box and expands your worldview. That’s always a good thing. What college theory does not do is teach wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to apply ANY obtained knowledge to life in a practical and meaningful way. I know plenty of people without that coveted degree, that have more wisdom than many (if not most) college professors. My grandfather grew up on a farm in Minnesota. He and my grandmother crossed the US many times, building water towers. He was a foreman. But the man could do ANYTHING and everything! When my g-ma had surgery, the doctor told him she shouldn’t go up stairs. Their travel trailer had four stairs. He decided that would be too hard on her. He spent the next four days turning their garage into a house, complete with plumbing, electricity and a wood stove for heat. I can’t tell you everything that man accomplished in his life. The man turned his bicycle into a motorized vehicle (commonly called a moped)! When the home computer was just starting to gain traction, he bought one, learned to use it and taught my g-ma! She only had a third grade education, but what she knew, she could apply it! She not only learned the computer, but kept up with their stock portfolios! She didn’t have a degree, but she was loaded wisdom! They both were. More importantly, neither of them ever stopped learning. Mr cool Breeze, you would do well to get you some wisdom and learn to see beyond what’s right in front of you. (Loosing that thin skin would be a good place to start). By the way, I have three college diplomas in two different areas. Had it not been for an unfortunate illness that has left me completely disabled, I would have had two more within an 18 month period. I put myself through college (twice!) while trying to raise three kids and had a disabled husband. Learn to respect people who are different than you; people who think and live differently. You might learn something useful. All my best to you. Have a good day. Edited: as a side note. I learned those two quotes in college.
@little19424 жыл бұрын
Karen Edwards Autocorrect gets a lot of us! Check out damn you autocorrect!) On a more serious note. I agree, no one asksto get raped, but you sure should do everything you can to protect yourself. Opening the door naked (and it being common knowledge), would certainly cause the creeps to take advantage. That’s how most rapes (and other crimes) happen- opportunity. Our public schools have so dumbed down the curriculum, a lot of kids are functionally illiterate. Unfortunately, it’s been going on for decades, but the last 10-20 years have been the worst. I have several friends that are teachers. They were mad about “no child left behind”, but horrified at common core! What your seeing in college these days is not only a result of that, but of kids who have been coddled and spoiled beyond reason. Colleges used to have standards, but since the government takeover of student loans (the ACA), all the colleges see is dollar signs! They don’t care if a person can’t pay it back, or that they’re not getting a useful education. It’s about the free flow money. People aught to start suing the colleges for misrepresenting their product! Many kids are taking remedial classes on top of their field of study. Such as the “Studies” curriculums, such as “women’s studies”, “lesbian studies” or some other crap like that. Stuff that has no practical applications at all. My brother in law is an electrical engineer. He was training a new graduate (who did have a degree in electrical engineering) and he had a good laugh when she said, “Wow, the world is nothing like college taught us!” Lol. At least she’s learning. Sounds like you have a quite the family! Although, selling beer to college kids is a little too easy! Lol. (Please don’t take offense!). That is called supply/demand economics and it always works! Lol. Take care Karen.

I love this guy. Everytime I hear this guy, I start smiling. This guy has a quality that today is few and far between. I would be extremely weary of anyone who dislikes Shapiro. To me, it would be a definitive red flag.

Thank you Ben for being brilliant and willing to do what we all wish we could do too! Your response was spot on! I also don’t need a degree to know Bs when I hear it!

Um, HE WENT TO HARVARD LAW! Is this kid seriously trying to compare his BS degree from a no name school to Bens education??
@channell114 жыл бұрын
He's trying to make a point that since Ben doesn't have a sociology degree that his opinion doesn't have credibility. That's the trap of thinking that credentials=intelligence.
@namelessminionveinreaver37634 жыл бұрын
Ben's entire point here is that his Harvard law degree is irrelevant as well. All a formal education proves is that you have money (or debt) and were able to retain information long enough to feed it back to them. A good argument stands on its own. If it needs a title to back it up, it's a bad argument.

@Paulonbass75 He didn't volunteer his credentials until he was asked to do so. So what point are you (poorly) trying to make?
