This was one of the best episodes of season 1 by far. So much to unpack, Magic at center, David Stern's MVP switcheroo. What were your thoughts on this episode or the season in general now that it's over? Leave a comment and let us know.

I haven’t seen too many television shows, but I can say confidently that Winning time is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The filmmaking is just pure excellence, it’s nothing but amazing. The direction, acting, cinematography, writing is incredible. Really hope the show gains a larger audience because the show deserves the love

It helps if you weren't alive back then, otherwise it is a hard pass. Too many factual errors and just plain made-up stuff. Also, this is the only show where the real people are better looking (and in better shape) than the actors playing them.

WHAT A SEASON 1 for this show. The haters ?? Screw them LOL !! This is phenomenal script writing and cinematography from the era. Some facts from Episode 10: 1. Kareem injures his ankle in game in the 3rd quarter of Game 5 not on a sky hook but on a finger roll from right in front of the basket. He jumped and landed on Lionel Hollins foot. But this is nit picky, the show is pretty much on target here. 2. The show nailed the halftime score 60-60 and accurately depicted the Lakers running away with it in the 4th quarter. Fact check spot on. 3, It seems to be implied toward the end of the show that West will take over as GM for the 80-81 season. Fact check: West took over for the 82-83 season. Bill Charmane stayed on for 2 more seasons, 80-81 and 81-82 and went out on top with the 82 championship. 4. Rookie of the year vote tally was indeed 63-3, accurately depicted in the show. Fact check spot on. 5. MVP controversy. This remains an urban myth. There is one of the writers who had one of the 7 votes that went on record saying the CBS sports team approached the writers and convinced enough to change their vote to Magic. No concrete evidence to this day.

It's been fun View, I'll be right back at it as soon as Season 2, episode 1 premieres. As far as the post that was out here (but I do not see it now) about the concrete proof that the MVP vote was changed. My point is it's all hearsay and verbal in nature. No proof in writing has ever been presented that I can find on the internet anyway. For example if Bill Livingston had presented a paper ballot showing the vote was changed, that would absolutely be concrete evidence. Remember, this is 1980, none of this stuff was done electronically at the time. This is the best fact check that I can find about it online: In his memoir, "Kareem," Abdul-Jabbar cites sportswriter Bill Livingston, who publicly said the voting NBA writers had originally chosen Abdul-Jabbar as finals MVP - but the group was pressured "either by the network (CBS) or the league" to change the vote. Johnson had no say in the matter. But with Abdul-Jabbar stuck watching the game from his Los Angeles home, giving the award to an empty chair was bad TV. "My not being there in Philadelphia to receive the trophy on camera was a major inconvenience as far as the television people were concerned," Abdul-Jabbar wrote, making it clear he only cared about winning the game. He did not begrudge Johnson for the win, writing, "the outcome was never a problem between Magic and me."

I do not envy Adam McKay for having to choose between making the show more entertaining by embellishing the truth or by sticking to what is known to be truth. They say history isn't what happened but what we say happened. With the being said I think this show is extremely well made and if you go into expecting "the last dance" which I think a lot of people did. They will inevitably be burned. All and all I'm really happy it got renewed for season 2 and I can't wait to see more of what they have to offer.

0:08 When we last saw Darryl Dawkins, he was stirring up controversy over his two slam dunks that shattered the backboards in Kansas City and Philadelphia. The shattered backboards got the attention of NBA Commissioner Larry O'Brien who summoned Darryl to his office and tore him a new one and then warned him that anymore backboards shattered would result in a $5,000 fine. That put a stop to his backboard shattering antics. Don't get me wrong, but the slam dunk is an intimidating shot, a spectacular shot, a real crowd pleaser, the highest percentage shot in basketball, and in certain cases it is the only shot that you can take in basketball.

Stein was not commissioner til 1984. He sold the TV networks on featuring Bird/Magic starting in the 1985 season. Dr J had been to the finals in 1980, 1982, and 1983 so he was the biggest TV draw. Also, Sixers-Celtics rivarly was the biggest TV draw prior to 1984.

Poetic Justice regarding the LAKERS 1988 chip. Although James Worthy was the Finals MVP based on Games 6 and 7, Most people felt that Magic was the MVP of that series.
@JAWrightonline
@JAWrightonline 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 1980 Finals MVP was switched to give it to Magic instead of Kareem. However, it wasn't David Stern's idea. Kareem cited a December 1988 Cleveland Plain Dealer article written by Bill Livingston. Livingston was a Philadelphia sports writer and had a 1980 Finals MVP vote. In the article, entitled "An Open Apology to Kareem," Livingston confessed that as Game 6 was winding down and it was obvious the Lakers were going to win, CBS Sports officials came up to the seven sportswriters and begged them to change their votes from Kareem to Magic because Kareem wasn't there to receive it on camera (Really CBS Sports? You put the game on tape delay for.most of the U.S. at 11:30PM. By the time the Lakers won the title and MVP awards were to be given, it was about 2AM!!! What difference does it make if it was Kareem, Magic, Wilkes,.or even Haywood at that point?!?!? Madness). "So a couple of us dummies changed our votes from Kareem to Magic," Livingston wrote. "Robbing Kareem of the Finals MVP by a 4-3 vote."

I’m thinking they’ll unpack 1981 in the first episode, but then focus on 1982 for the rest of the season. Other than Magic’s injury, their 1st round exit and Bird getting his first title, their isn’t as much to deep dive into like 80 or 82

I'm thinking '81. It feels like they've really set up the Bird vs Magic angle this season.
@hbeach14
@hbeach14 2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing 82 just because you have the Westhead/Magic drama and West/Riley becoming co-head coaches. But West not wanting the job and telling Riley he's the coach. Much more drama in 82 than 81. Like harrier414 said, you can unload 81 in one episode with Magic's injury, 1st round exit and Bird winning the chip since the series is about the Lakers and not the Celtics.

This is crap , Magic knew Bird won Rookie of the year, before the game started. He went knowing that. This silly 4 quarter fantasy reveal is just wrong. The shame is years from more people will believe this crap , than what really happened.
