So, JJ wasn't silenced at all, in fact, hes now the lakers head coach. He played in the league 11 years longer than the average NBA player and EVERYONE knows who he is regardless if they like him or not. Haters gonna hate.

You described JJ as a former "NBA star." He was never a star. He was a journeyman.

Young players always bring up that the old players were fireman, plumbers, etc… that don’t mean they couldn’t hoop it just means they needed to make more to support their family so young players need to thank them for paving the way

Jj was disrespectful and they had it harder the further back you go in history in anything. But it doesn’t make them better than modern day players. Tougher for sure but not better. Especially in the 60s when they literally had plummers playing amongst greats like Cousy and West.

JJs point is still valid. Yes players today are better because of the technology and the understanding on how to workout and how to properly train your body. This isn't saying that the old generation was just full of guys that were worse talent wise but the fact that they didn't train like we do today and the fact they didn't have all the extra help we do made them less effective players. Also consider the fact that now with the Internet and scouting being what it is, you have a league completely full of capable guys. Just about any dude could average 20 if their coaches designed a game plan around them or told the team they want that guy taking the most shots. Back in the 60s you had to have Wilt or Jerry West handling the ball and taking the shots because of you didn't you were essentially letting an average Joe decide your fate lol. The stars back then were phenomenal no doubt but the rest of the guys who filled out the roster? They are way tougher and more capable in today's game. That's what JJ was saying and maybe he could have said it more sensitively but it doesn't change the fact of the matter. Btw Jerry West Bashing JJ for only averaging 12 points os pretty funny. I guess this means Stephen A. Shouldn't be allowed to debate basketball, Nate McMillan shouldn't be allowed to coach, etc. just because a guy didn't put up 30 a night doesn't mean he don't understand the game or can't debate it/coach it/etc.

Improvements in sports are all rooted in technology. It's not some biological evolution that humans being went through in a minimal amount of time such as 50 years. People can only compete against what and whom is against them. Comparisons across generations or the silly argument that "they won because their opposition was weak" are a waste of time. Fact is, in his generation, against the opposition the had, JJ was an average player. The plumbers would smoke JJ if they didn't have to have summer jobs, fly comercial, play in converse trainers, lacked proper nutritional and physical counselling, etc.

Doesn't everyone understand that if Jerry West hadn't passed away when he did, Mr. Redick would never have been hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. There are millions of fans of the NBA who will never understand what the Lakers were thinking when they made that decision. I'll be amazed if he lasts even one season.

I will say this, any player in any sport, that can only elevate themselves by belittle and disrespect those player before them, are ABSOLUTE PATHETIC, deserves ZERO respect from anyone and has ZERO credibility of whatever came out of their mouth, NONE! That's such a disgusting antic and in my opinion, a literal TRASH behavior, without those great players who devote their passion, their life and hard work to promote the NBA back then, there won't be a sport called basketball nor there will be NBA league for people like JJ " the trash " Redick to even play in with.

To add, I grew up in Jerry's era. I was 12watching on TV when the Lakers won their 1st title in L.A. Older players get no respect. Jerry west, Bill Russell, David Thompson, Dr. J, Larry Bird. Elgin Baylor, Would've ate a lot of modern players UP! Different Eras, Different Heroes.

The average height for All NBA Players in the 1960’s was 6’5!!! Average height for All NBA Players in 2024 is 6’6! The average height for Centers in the 1960’s was 6’10. Average height for Centers in 2024 is 6’10! Not much has changed from the 1960’s to 2024. If you took any of those Hall of Famer’s like Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor etc… and transported them to the modern era, they’d adapt and still be great players today. To prove my point, all of the above mentioned players, played with or against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem’s surely not a plumber, right? Kareem once stated of his former teammate, “Oscar Robertson is the greatest basketball player I’ve ever saw!”

Honestly, this is a people thing, not just a basketball or sports thing - we all went to school being told that we've learnt all this new stuff since our parents went to school, that half the stuff we were told by our parents isn't 'quite right..' and 'we now know better' etc etc. If the old guard ever do out perform us (did more things or faster)- we blame safety or point to the fact that they destroyed their bodies getting things done the way they did - like the 60s and 70s was the middle ages and they weren't as much at the forefront of the game/industry then as we are now.

Redick could not carry Cousy's jock-strap into the gym, much less judge Jerry West. In an 8-team league, Reddick would be playing on his lunch-hour.
