Winning is good for sparring. Reyes pushes you to punch properly and strengthen your hands and wrists to become a better puncher and hit harder which is the purpose of Mexican gloves.

Very objective review! This is the most classic comparison (Reyes vs Winnings)! Fair points made about Reyes improvement and greater wrist protection. I've used both as well - more Winnings than Reyes cos of the size and fit etc, but will definitely give the improved Reyes another go. Great analysis as usual. Pretty scary the depth of your knowledge in all the different gloves! Apart from knowledge, it's also your clarity (in speech) and strong articulation that makes your reviews really enjoyable. Keep it up, bro!

In objective matters, the Mexican glove, because of how Mexican boxers are, tend to be of a more aggressive style. The Japanese, on the other hand, tend to have much less resistance to physical trauma or in general to give a good blow, which makes the extra cushion in them more understandable, The winning ones are more for Japanese hands and the Cleto Reyes for the tough Mexican hands. Maybe the Japanese are still great at boxing

I have the exact same set of gloves, just in red instead of blue. Agree with your assessment and comparison. I have bad wrists and MUCH prefer the wrist support on the Reyes over the Winning. So much so, I always use my Reyes 16oz on the bags and for sparring and the MS500Bs only get use on the floor to ceiling ball/pads. If you have bad wrists and put a high value on wrist support, I highly recommend first trying the Winning on before buying them. I wasn't able to do this and would not have shelled out the $460 AUD had I done so.

I do not won a pair of Winning, mainly because I just can not justify spending $500 on a glove just to say I have a pair when I already own Cleto Reyes gloves that give you a better glove for half the price. Great review, I also had both of these gloves. I ended up selling the winning and investing in more Reyes gear. I don't know what it was, but after a few weeks of the Wining gloves my hands hurt every time I used them. In between the the thumb and index finger on the right, over the left knuckles on the left. I thought I was wrapping wrong or something, then switch on and off different days, for weeks and it kept happening. I am almost tempted to purchase another pair and try them again, maybe mine were just constructed poorly. I have 3 pairs of Reyes now, 12, 14 and 16, even the twelves being smaller and tighter, no issues.

Thanks for the great review, it's very informative. Would you say that winning 10oz + fortress proelite SS considering the less wrist support would be recommended for someone who had wrist issues in the past? And since they're more snug would it be too tight if you wore the Fortress under 10oz winning gloves? Thanks

I ordered cleto reyes extra padded 16 oz, velcro training gloves for my home heavy bag workouts. I was so impressed with the high quality of the craftmanship. However to my disappointment, I kept getting pain and thumb numbness in my right hand. I have an old pair of Ringside Ultimate bag gloves that have no rips or torn stitching and the gloves have never given me any issues like the Reyes have. I did not want to lose my money that I paid for the Reyes so I returned them. Just going to build up build up padding under hand wrap to offset the old bag gloves until I decide to try another glove.

Hey Carlo! My father in law is going to japan and what I found out is 1º - winning's are impossible to get there, out of stock EVERYWHERE.. but... reyes go really "cheap" there compared to get them from US. They only have black and red reyes but I'm inclined to get them from there. I'm between reyes and topboxer win1.. I have bad wrists and broke my hand once.. are reyes that bad when it comes to comfort? Are they good for my everyday glove (bag, mitt, sparring.. pretty much everything). Really strong, wide velcro strap. I believe Cletos are the best made glove out of all that I've owned, including Winning. Its just a matter of preference as far as padding, thumb placement, wrist support , etc. Winnings feel better on the hand IMO, and I prefer a pillowy glove to work power shots, but the Cletos will probably last longer and they haven't gotten any funky smell yet like my other gloves.

Most people aren't gonna put enough time or body of work like a pro or amateur boxer would. So for the regular boxing gym warrior, Winning is an unnecessary luxury purchase clocking in at $300 and up. Cleto Reyes however will more than enough meet all the needs of the gym warrior. You can get two separate gloves for bag/pad, and sparring only for the price of Winning. Don't even get me started with Fly UK, Di Nardo, and custom Adidas! Good Lord!

@csquaredboxing
@csquaredboxing 5 жыл бұрын
That’s cool to know about the wrist strap! I wish they would make it standard as the smaller strap really offers no stability or support to begin with. Bro that Donaire KO was vicious, glad his opponent was ok, apparently he took the fight on 3 days notice. Left his right hand super low anticipating a body shot from Nonito and he went upstairs instead.

Do you think for a woman with small hands would feel awkward in some 12oz cleto Reyes for bag work due to how deep the finger pocket is? I was wanting to upgrade or try out a nicer pair of gloves since I've hit the bag in everlast and fighting brand boxing gloves the last 15 years, want to mix it up. Was leaning towards Cleto Reyes due to quicker shipping and being more affordable, but the hand size comment makes me nervous. Also wondering if they are painful to hit mitts in? Had both in 14oz lace up. Changed to Cleto’s after a month, as the Winnings gave me knuckle pain. They’re really small, and I can’t close my fist properly, my hands aren’t even that big...? I found the support for the wrist better in the Winning lace up, even though there’s no padding, the leather seems slightly stiffer, but apart from that the Cleto Reyes all day!!! Major Go! So much more comfortable and less money!

In my experience the Cletos are great gloves for real hitters. Well, in the end they were made by and for the hands of the best Mexican boxers. The fact that they cost less than the winning ones even if they are almost on par in terms of quality is easy to understand. Not only are they made in Japan, but Japanese labor is a thousand times more limited and well, I don't think they have the same access to leather as Mexicans or people from other countries. Cleto Reyes es la mera chingoneria bandita, pero los winning estan realmente cabrones para los sparring por su excesivo colchón. I prefer not to translate that sentence, not at the moment xd

Cleto Reyes are built like tanks. The hand compartment is also more open so they can dry out quicker after use and not end up smelling funky. Ive had them in the rotation for a few years and they still look and smell new. I reserve my Winnings for sparring. I love how Winnings feel but the price is prohibitive if you go through gloves quickly. A good price for 16oz is about 330 bucks. Cletos cost half that and last longer.

Cleto Reyes have horrible ergonomics.The wrist/forearm area have so much padding it cuts off blood circulation and the positioning is the worst out of any glove I’ve tried. The gloves weigh 22oz in 12oz I just sold mine. The most beautiful glove I’ve owned is just horrible for me . Every pro I’ve seen train with winnings I’ve never seen anyone train with Reyes.

Chris Shaffstall I agree about Reyes' ergonomics. The cuff is definitely uncomfortable and the glove puts your hand in a weird position. A lot of people like it though, or accept it because of the stellar quality. A lot of it comes down to preference in the end.
