I have several pairs of Reyes. No one hits the right weight. BUT recently got a new pair, lace ups, black, 16oz. Not only they are spot on in terms of weigh but also they are really really similar to Grants in terms of shape and geometry. Thumb is quite different from the usual Reyes ones, punch surface is flat and notably tilted up towards the thumb, wrists are also very different. Amazing gloves which seems to be a completely different brand. And yes, they are original Reyes, not a copy.

I completly disagree, ive had several and were all bad and i live in mexico so theyre easy to get, hand compartment is huge, limited padding, i would never recommend cleto reyes training gloves, pro gloves on the other hand are a diffrent story.

Anyway, saying Reyes has a huge compartment and almost no padding makes me think you haven't tried the real deal despite living in Mexico. Too much tequila maybe? Although being you it could have been plain water... Anyhow, who cares?

@@irragrams Cleto Reyes are hand crafted gloves by many manufacturers, many different maquiladoras, your gloves could have been of those lucky gloves made by Grants manufacturers. Many workers who hand craft boxing gloves sometimes makes Grants, sometimes they do Cleto Reyes, and also they make New Sportings gloves. That is why they could be quite similar, that could explain your lucky Cleto Reyes gloves.

great review as always Simon. I absolutely love my Reyes gloves. Purchased mine about 5 years ago in 18oz lace up and NO they were not on weight but after having them for so many years and they still new looking and the padding is in its prime. At first i jammed my thumb a few times which has never happened before but after a few uses it never happened again. I really appreciate the fact that Reyes is so transparent on where, how, who and what they use to make their gloves. i cant think of any company that does that and for that reason i think they deserve to be at the top of the list as far as brands go. I always recommend people get some Reyes if they do not already own a pair.

Ordered my first pair today and was super nervous about the weight issue. I seen in a forum somewhere that since the release of their latest extra padding gloves that they’ve been trying to fix the weight issue and it’s more spot on, so any gloves made it recent months that haven’t been sitting on shelves are allegedly more accurate. I got the blacks in 12oz…Left came up 12.6oz & the right was 12.2oz. Might’ve lucked out or it could be that Reyes actually stepped it up. Overall I love these gloves and they might be my favorites. The downside is breaking them in because my thumb is uncomrtable because it’s tight and just putting them on is a process.

I always love your videos and have been following for a while and just wanted to make a small correction based on what I see on their tags since I have a couple different pair of Cleto Reyes as well. The training gloves are all made from cow hide leather and their fight gloves are all made with goat skin, you can also verify this on the tags that come inside the glove and on their website. Great review otherwise!

Hello Simón, i m writting from spain and i bought a pair of cleto reyes, 16 ounces last week and i thought the same but when i put them on the scale i was hallucinating the weight on the scale was right not over weight just 15.5 right and 16.2 left glove. I have my 16oz Cleto Reyes, real weigh 20,2 oz. At the start of the training it is no problem, but after 30 minutes I lost punches accuracy and I think there is more cons than pros when you strenghten your arms, but can't control the technique. However, I like Cleto feeling and quality so I send inquiry for real 16oz (don't care if it gonna be 10oz or 20oz). Will be back with their answer.

Try the hybrid gloves from CR they are the best glove Cleto Reyes do! I tried load of gloves and nothing comes even close to the fit of the hybrids they come is S M L rather than weight but from the moment I put them on I felt ''this is it, I found what I was looking for''.... I hated the ones in this video btw.. X-Small (Youth) 6 oz. Small 8 to 10 oz. Medium 12 to 14 oz. Large 16 to 18 oz.

I didn't know they have an hybrid version. I'm thinking of getting 18oz to secure a good padding support but I've read many bad comments about knuckle issues with Cleto Reyes.

About to pull the trigger on a pair of Reyes gloves. Its just a bit of a nightmare for me as there are no shops that are close by that sell them. For a great number of years i have been using 16oz gloves for heavy bag work as they always seem bigger made. I would love to be able to train with a 12 or 14oz so i dont fatigue as quickly (as im getting old). Im a 6ft 2 heavyweight with 9 inch hand circumference (just below the knuckles. Do you think i could get away with 14oz if i order a pair online? Also considering The Hayabusa T3 Leathers

Great review. Don't understand how Cleto Reyes is capable of making a glove that's a work of art but is so off weight and has other QC issues. I had a pair of 16 oz velcro a few years ago that were ridiculously heavy and the forearms were so tight they cut off my circulation. I'm 6'1" 180lbs (1.85 meters/81.6 kg) with average size hands and forearms for my size. If you haven't done a review of the HMIT (Hand Made in Thailand) Mexican style sparring gloves from Combat Corner, then maybe something to consider. I've been using them for a few years and can't say enough good things about them: on weight, great wrist support, hand compartment for a 16 oz is the right size, comfortable thumb, tight lining that doesn't bunch up, latex padding, and built like tanks (need some break in but worth it). The padding is more dense and protective than Cleto Reyes gloves and really crack on the heavy bag and mitts. I liked them so much I have both the 16 oz velcro and lace up versions. The wrist support is great in both. Nothing beats the Cleto Reyes leather and these don't have that amazing smell but I'd take the Combat Corner gloves over the current Cleto Reyes gloves with all the QC issues any day.

Hello Simon. I am thinking about getting a pair of Cleto Reyes gloves, but I have small hands (from wrist to the tip of my middle finger is 16/17cm). Do you think the gloves will fit my hands? I think that you should not go reyes With small hands and lighter weight They will be normally a heavier than stated on the label glove plus other gloves would be snugger for your hands Phenom Rival Adidas Adispeed or tilt Fly Would be a better option for you

They can be used for both but I always recommend separate sparring and bag gloves

You can use the velcro for sparring too, so have a look, but the lace ups will serve you best for that👍🏻

You need to do a direct comparison with the pair that came in overweight to ascertain how Reyes are managing the weight changes. The concern is that less is less. That’s why overweight Reyes is better, not worse, because there is more in all the right places. Which is perfectly acceptable for a training glove where comfort and durability is the priority. Also for a training glove, how responsive gloves are is much more important than how true to weight they are. The concern is Reyes may become less responsive. Responsiveness is unique to Reyes, their other stand out quality is leather grade and thickness. Better to have a heavier glove with thicker leather than a true to weight glove with thinner lesser leather. Mind you, you mentioned goatskin. Their famous fight gloves utilise goatskin. Their training gloves used to be cowhide. If all they was swap out the hides that great. Weight weiners shut up! All you do is cry cry cry. Not sweat sweat sweat, which is going to increase hand weight anyhow. Get your priorities right before grizzling the weight is not right.

Well all I will say is if a glove has a 14 oz on the label then what’s the point in putting that label on if the no where near either higher or lower As stated in the video I rate reyes highly But other top brands are getting this correct so it’s hard to ‘give Reyes a free pass’ when others are getting weight close to the stated oz label

When you utilise natural materials weights will differ daily just like milk from the same cow differs daily. Reyes gloves utilise real leather and natural tree derived latex. If people really want to criticise quality inconsistencies they are better to assess workmanship variation between left and right gloves, and physical differences such as glove heights, widths, circumference, etc. Look at those sorts of things first before comparing numbers on a scale just like any smart dummy can do. Everywhere, modern manufacturing, driven by accounting, is trying to give consumers less whilst charging them more. The additional weights of Mexican made training (not fight) gloves was always a plus, just like buying meat from the butcher and they give you more is a plus. It’s nothing to shout out about. Reyes made the best gloves, most optimised, best fit for purpose, made from the best materials, to the highest craftsmanship, yet geared towards meeting realistic production costs. The gloves ended up weighing what they weighed. Yes they were overweight but Reyes continued that way because they were dedicated to strength and quality first and foremost! All this pressure to making their gloves make weight is a quality drive away from excellence, towards mediocrity, causing Reyes gloves to no longer stand out as they had. Here is an actual product choice example present and currently active today: which would you rather have, a fat Fairtex cowhide, latex, punchers glove or their microfibre, polyurethane leather / foam, true to weight equivalent? Because right now they are currently producing both and it is very much this kind of pressure which will be favouring them to, in future, producing only the lousy latter.

Cleto Reyes are now incorporating synthetic EVA into their gloves to achieve desired weight goals. Most likely because of a bunch of loud lousy whiners. Natural latex rubber is much more durable and has better physical rebound properties. Training gloves don’t need to make weight. They just need to be best made to withstand abuse. Not that it stopped the verbal abuse from babbling cry babies.

It is sad that they are utilising less durable materials but even though I get that it doesn’t need to be on weight, it does make sense it still needs to be somewhat close instead of 2-4oz over. It’s somewhat significant when it comes to bagwork and on the pads as you want to focus on technique and not sacrifice proper form with heavier gloves.
