They used to kill the cute little weasels by the hundreds and cut off their tails to send to the factory, not sure if they still do that though.

synthetics r inferior cuz i suppose that we have not produced bristles as thin as sable hair

I looked into it, apparently they use leg traps and snares to catch weasels in China/Russia. Leg traps were banned in like the 60's for being too inhumane, I probably won't be buying Sable brushes.

Using a 4 to paint lenses, you must have very steady hands! I don't even own a 4, I use a 0 for most detailing going down to a 000 for eyes etc. W&N are the best brushes out there by far, I've tried about 20 different makes of brush, and can't recommend them enough. In the UK there's an online store called "Art Discount" who I buy my supplies from, they're the cheapest seller of W&N brushes and when I once did have a problem with 1 brush, they sent me out a replacement immediately, good guys!

RandomAlien Gaming Thank you for your comment. Great to hear your experience with them. I'm releasing a painting tutorial for a Primaris space marine for next week's Warhammer Wednesday video where I only use the 4.

have you tried the reserva escoda?
@hmichael2285 жыл бұрын
would not say that W&N is the best brush out there but they are good. all the Kolinsky Sable brushes of even some reputable companies are good. some even great. Raphael, Isabey, Da Vinci, Jackson's (Jackson's Art of the UK), Escoda, Daler Rowney, Rosemary & Co etc etc all make good brushes, some smaller, some larger, some very expensive $450 or so... I've got W&N, Da Vinci and my most recent ones Jackson's Kolinsky sable and they are up there with the best...

Miniature doesn't refer to painting miniatures it is in reference to the brush profile, in the smaller sizes most prefer the regular Series 7 brushes as they hold a little more paint and also the longer brush head makes edge work a little easier by all accounts.(personal preference I guess) If buying these for detail work size 0 and a 1 is a good start. I do own quite a few WN S7's and another brush which IMHO is very comparable is Broken toad brushes, these have actually been designed for painting miniatures. You can buy a set of the broken toads but I found the size 0 1 and 2 would cover most painting needs. ( they size slightly smaller than WN) They also do some brushes for base work with a different shaped brush head but I haven't tried these.

I would have to agree, WN get the most press space online for being the best brushes, and they are really really good but there are equals out there... I got some WN S7s from a local art shop because I was getting disapointed with the cheaper brushes I was using before, they were about £10 each in general, the shop was selling WN for full retail, so your size 6 cost me about £40, I wouldnt mind only paying £25 :) and yes I was happy with it and still am, but I tried others and was happy with them too and they cost me less and are just as good.

Thanks for that, it kinda helps me as I am to use it for mini painting but I think the regular series 7 is fine instead of the shorter/smaller miniature series size

Those are miniature brushes of the series. The famous ones are the long hair series 7's. Good video but you should mention that. The miniature refers to the length of the hairs.

According to my sources when I was employed at GW for about 5 years I asked about the brushes and they said that they were being made by Windsor &a Newton as it was cheaper to outsource the brushes rather than Citidel making them. (Not 100%)

I bought a size 6 a few months ago and I’m not impressed to be honest. It doesn’t seem to hold water very well. If I paint long brush strokes across the page it doesn’t take long before the brush splays. It’s definitely legit because I purchased it from a well known established art store in the UK. Maybe I’m not using it correctly? I have a LOT of brushes all different makes - my favourite make so far is the Princeton Neptune it holds SO much water it goes on and on before it dries out. I’m planning to paint birds soon and have decided to give the series another go so I’ve ordered a size 1 for this purpose.

Or your local warhammer shop has a bigger margin on selling GW brushes than W&N. 😊

W & N Sable are obviously very good, but I have always found that they are a bit delicate and are quick to show wear as they get older I now prefer W & N Sceptre Gold which is a sable - synthetic mix. This has, as far as I'm concerned, all the good qualities of sable, but with just a bit more resilience; and is quite a bit cheaper
@Sup3rSaiy3n6 жыл бұрын
Geoffrey Boyling Interesting. Never heard of those before. Thank you.
@geoffreyboyling6156 жыл бұрын
I also use W & N Cotman Watercolour brushes. These are all synthetic, but quite soft, and are designed specifically for watercolours Both these and the Sceptre Gold are cheap enough to try a couple without breaking the bank

I got my second Winsor & Newton series 7 a couple days ago, and it came faulty, just like my first one. Completely useless for my needs (comics inking). Quality control is lousy with the W&N brushes these days. I also have heard a lot of professional artists complaining about that. Pretty unacceptable for the price. I'll stick to Raphael brushes from now on.

Personally I use Rosemary & Co. Kolinsky Sable brushes, they work great for me. I have to say that the brush sizes I use are way smaller than yours, this probably just a personal preference, but I'm not painting titans.
@Sup3rSaiy3n7 жыл бұрын
Amanda Jansen No worries. There's a lot of detail in those titans, especially in the heads where you have to paint eyes, lenses etc. Anyway my point is that you can still have a lot of detail on a large model. This week though I've been painting Custodes and the size 4 has been more than adequate.
@MandaPii_7 жыл бұрын
Like I said, personal preference. I have no doubt that you can be precise enough with a size 4 brush, if it has a good point, but it's just that I wouldn't have a use for them unless I was painting titans just to cover the huge amounts of plain body work. I personally don't like to use large brushes as I can be far more precise with a smaller one. Looking forward to see you paint a primaris marine with it and seeing how you use it.

Should have gone to Ken Bromley, and the brushes should have the plastic sleeve on and placed brush end down, so that the glue inside the metal shaft does not break down and you start losing hairs, this is a pain to do, but using this method has saved me money and kept my brushes working for years.
@Sup3rSaiy3n4 жыл бұрын
Chris Calver I shouldn’t have gone to anywhere pal. I didn’t even hear of them until your mention and even then I would carry out my own research. Even though I build more than I paint I’m more than happy with these brushes. Thanks for watching.

The miniature refers to the shorter bristle head rather than being designed for painting on miniatures (of which they're not - they are watercolour paint brushes, but because miniature acrylic paints like citadel's are much more thinned down than regular acrylic paints they behave much like watercolour paints). I personally think they're overpriced. i'm sure they're very good, but much overpriced. As for the comments that WN makes citadel's paint brushes : they only make their artificer brushes. If it doesn't say artificer, they're china made. Personally I use sable brushes i found on ebay (they were something like £1.50 each i think?) and am fine with them, still holding a perfect point. Stay away from citadel's cheap brushes. If you must go for a brand , buy army painter, but don't buy the white handle ones, buy the brown handle ones. Did you also know that Dove soap bars share nearly all of it's components (other than a bit of moisturising oil and fragrance) with paint brush soap? And they cost £1 each ;)
