Don't forget that some of these folks have mental problems and don't do drugs or alcohol but are unable to cope with normal society. Some are Combat Veterans. They choose and/or are often pushed away so they have to try to live whatever way they can which is what you see. Being hateful towards them is really not the right approach.

I dealt with homeless people everyday while working private security in downtown Tulsa. Everyday and every night I had to run them off our commercial property. There are 5 homeless shelters alone in the downtown Tulsa area. Several churches that offer free meals and help. I'm telling you most of them don't want help. Some even admitted to me they'd been banned from the shelters. With most of them homelessness is their choice! Some of them are drug addicts and some are mentally off. We could call the cops and all they would do is come and run them off. They would NEVER arrest them and take them away. One Tulsa police officer told me he had had them urinate and puke in his patrol car. All they can do is arrest them for trespassing. But they have no money to pay the fine. It's just an ongoing problem that's left for society to have to deal with. When they shut down state mental hospitals that's when it started.

Winston-Salem recently cut funding (Don't know how much) to Bethesda Center. The cities largest homeless shelter. The cuts mostly affect the day shelter. It will only be open 3-5pm on Weekdays and closed on the weekends. So this will not help at all except discourage some homeless people from going through the shelter programs.

I live at the end of a 2 mile long dirt road. A while back some homeless tramps pulled up in a junker motorhome and thought they were going to set up in front of my house in the turnaround. My neighbors and I quickly let them know it wasnt going to happen and that it was time to move on. A couple months later, I saw the motorhome abandoned on the side of the road for the state to clean up. We have a nice, clean area and dont want these fools trashing it and then moving on. Most of them get temp work at the pot farms in the area.

We had the same problem, want to know what the fix was? The superbowl threatened New Orleans. The possibility of losing the superbowl and the mayor actually started making them clean then up. Once the superbowl is over I’m sure we will have them back almost immediately.

Some cities in California, like San Francisco and Oakland, have begun clearing out homeless encampments for the past two months (Oakland got approval from a Federal Judge to clear out one encampment at the Bay Bridge) and it has been quite successful with tons of opposition. Its only been a few months (they started in July) so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I just watched them clear and clean out a small area near my home. The city removed to large garbage trucks full of trash. They place they were camping out in was less than one acre. Let that sink in one acre and two overflowing garbage trucks. 3 weeks after the clean up they came back.

News 13 here in Asheville reported today, 09/20/24 about a homeless encampment being an Arby's restaurant that is closed on long shoals road and the said the police dept served a notice to vacate, (find another bush) and the property owner is responsible for clean up.

The Mayor's office has a "three-step plan" Work with property owners (ignore complaints) Engage with these individuals to connect them with services (free needles, food garbage pickup) and Coordinate with police (don't let them arrest anyone) They refer to the city's housing director who has NOT RETURNBED HIS CALL because he doesn't have to pretend to care.

Democrats run Winston-Salem government and have been for decades. Lots of major companies have left WS leaving a huge void. 85 percent of office space in downtown is vacant. From Reynolds to Krispy Kreme, they leave. In the wake of business departure we have less jobs, less quality people coming to WS. And subsequently more people struggling to survive. We need to vote out the ‘status quo’ Democrats out of city and county office. WS is a good place to live and could be a major player again in the business world.

I agree. Our politicians are what causes this. Not all homeless are alcoholics or drug addicts. Some genuinely work, but with rent constantly going up, some cant afford it. Sad but true. I dont like homeless camps Esther, but we need to address the government. Unfortunately, most talk the talk, but no walk the walk.

Through hard times I fell on homelessness once ( not in a camp like this).... But the point is I took quick action to get back on my feet. Alot of the homeless out there have a horrendous attitude and they are incredibly messy and throw garbage anywhere they please. Not caring about anything but themselves, which is kinda why they're stuck where they are stuck. It boils down to the fact that some are just lousy people and they think somebody owes them something. And they're to lazy to be accountable

People need to start at the city county level and get laws made then go to local law enforcement and push for law enforcement to do the job that the people empowered them to do.Stop jails from being into money making.local law enforcement won’t lock up vagrants because they use jail cells for making money by charging other counties to house prisoners,and the big money is from federal prisoners.
