My Ricky Rudd story: from 92 through 94 I raced 1/4 midgets in Pennsylvania. I raced primarily at a little then new dirt track on the Pocono raceway property. As a perk we would get free tickets and passes to the 2 nascar Pocono races each year. One year (92 or 93. I would of been 9 or 10) I was walking through the garage area and Ricky Rudd in his Tide car hit me while on his way out to practice. Caught me in the back of the legs and I landed butt first on the hood, putting a dent in it. Everything was fine, I was unhurt and it was basically just brushed off. They never fixed the hood and he raced the race with the dent in the hood. I did well in the series. Came in 2nd in championship my second year (93). But funding and political issues (I had a $5k car. They had $5k paint jobs. The rich kid parents sat on the board and weren’t happy that a low buck team was beating them), forced us to quit 3/4 through my 3rd season (94).

@@RightTurnRandy it was lesson I learned quickly and have heard from others in other Motorsports. If you ain’t got the the cash, you ain’t going anywhere. And those with all the money will do what they can to make sure that poorer (financially) teams never become or stay a contender to them. A good example is in nascar. How many of the top drivers of the last 10-15 years came from poorer families? Not many, if any. Most of the new young stars either came from money or from a racing family with money and connections.
