I like the way you have modified the Porter with the add-ons, especially the angled water bottle holsters. Very ingenious! - hadn't seen anyone do that before....

I've done the Oil Creek loop twice in the winter when it got nice and cold below freezing. The firewood situation is amazing. I just kept that fireplace stuffed. The dog and I were nice and warm even without closing in the sides. I'm finally going to do it in the summer in a few weeks. It'll be nice to be able to do it in Bedrocks :)

@@BryceNewbold That's why I ended up with a UGQ Bandit. They have the ready to ship/fast track quilts. For getting the 800 fill down it's slightly more than the Econ quilts but the turnaround time is within a week. Luckily, mine ended up being a gift so I didnt have to spend any $ for it. ;-)

I lived in Erie, PA for many decades and was a nordic ski patroller at Wilderness Lodge. These are my creds. Oil Creek State Park is 60 miles south of Erie, near Titusville and Oil City, PA. Your gear is only good for above 20 F. and very little snow. Beginner winter campers need to look at other sources for more suitable cold and snowy weather gear.
@BryceNewbold5 жыл бұрын
I litterally say that in the video. Low 20s. Also its for shelter camping. Listed clearly in the title.

I'm surprised the GW was enough of a puffy. I was out at Oil Creek this past weekend and I was sometimes cold with a warmer jacket. CostCo quilt was definitely a good thing for me as well. With it and a 20 degree quilt, I was nice and toasty.
@BryceNewbold6 жыл бұрын
Oh hey man! Yea the GW wouldnt be my first choice but i dont have a proper, packable, winter jacket yet. Although with my layers I am good into the teens with it. And any amount of work that im doing always warms me up.. could of used a warmer quilt however.. not bad. but if not for the fire it wouldn't of been fun. lol
@JohnCleaver6 жыл бұрын
@@BryceNewbold yeah. I guess it depends on how much time you are spending sitting around. For me that's usually like 4pm-10pm or so in the winter, so I usually want something more. I'll have to test out how it works with some more layers underneath. Love seeing the winter videos, though!

Ultralight is 10 lbs or less ... in my opinion, trail weight is more important because I am not a ul backpacker but my trail weight, what I carry most of the time is lighter then many Ultralight backpackers...
@BryceNewbold6 жыл бұрын
I dont use ultralight as a term to define me. I respect that you use non "ultralite" gear and still have a respectable weight. My thing is... when i get down under a 12 pound baseweight, there is pretty much no point to spending hundreds more to get lighter.. its light enough that it feels great and any less is not needed. 👍 Cool gear is addicting and thats my problem. lol
@RealFooking4 жыл бұрын
18 lbs and light weight? Nah. I don't consider myself a lightweight backpacker or anything, in fact I hate the idea of ultralight backpacking, but my base weight for winter (with a bivvy bag included) is no more than 15 lbs. And that includes shelter.

The lack of signalling (whistle & mirror minimum, EPIRB if remote), lack of navigation (compass, map), lack of decent wilderness first aid / bleeding kit, lack of minimal fire kit, lack of repair kit (sewing, tape, cordage), & lack of emergency shelter is an ENORMOUS & unnecessary risk, to yourself & (more so) to those having to rescue you. If you become separated from your kit, or it fails, what are your PACE plans (Primary, Alternative, Contingency, Emergency)....?? Do ultralight hikers not follow expert advice regards minimum emergency gear? BTW - not criticising, just want you to be safe. I enjoy your vids.
@BryceNewbold6 жыл бұрын
I have a whistle on my backpack's chest strap/ i have a compass, GPS, and altitude on my watch. Not to mention a phone! Fire kit? 3 guys that all have lighters. Bleeding kit? clothing, trash bag, cordage, common sense. Were not bushcrafting out here, We walk.. eat ... and sleep. Most of the time within a few miles of the car or a town. In 32 years i've never had bleeding out issues..lol. Repair kit? (man up and carry it ). Emergency shelter? we paid 36 dollars for a shelter reservation, and If it somehow burnt down the in the time it took for us to get there... we would just take another empty one, bunk in someone else's, sleep in the wood shed or keep walking and go home. Bringing an emergency shelter is really reaching for things to worry about. P.s. have you ever looked at an Oil Creek map? Furthest thing from "wilderness" as you can get. This is not 100 miles deep in the Alaskan bush. I could probably run the entire 36 mile loop in 6 hours. Separated from my kit? We opted not to do any white water rafting on this trip. I do realize the risk of being minimalist, but i also know my limits of my body and my mental ability. Everyone is different. I would have packed differently if i had planed this trip (aka a paper map of my own) or if i was going solo, but I have all the emergency gear i need. Experience, innovation, cardio, and common sense.
