Farming in Ireland is a dead duck!

2.5 ton at current price wont pay for much on plus side straw price is strong last few years Dr joe patten teagasc had lastest research on current margins in farming published on agriland if u read the article u wonder will farmers b farming in 10 years time politicians would well to read it before the next election best luck with rest of farming

No total waste of time. Even at 3.5 ton to acre it’s no good. Barley was 150 a ton 20 years ago. It should be 300 plus a to allow for poor years.

@@gerry6420Just looking at the UK statistics. 800g sliced white bread, in 2004 the average was £0.64 and in 2024 it’s £1.39. 118.75% increase. Record profits for the retail giants. Corporate greed milking the country dry and they will just move on to the foreign suppliers when they are done.

Jesus how have john deere not sorted out that problem with their round balers yet. We're were at the same craic putting belts on a 578 20 years ago!
@gerry64203 ай бұрын
They did make changes, These ones wouldn’t be as bad as the older ones for doing it. But still could. It never has done it on me but I wanted to get the belt kit in case it ever did. The new 441 has the extra roller and don’t do it. They should have stuck the roller in 15 years ago to be fair.

Wondering when you mention winter barley and spring barley, what's the difference 🤔
@johndunne81233 ай бұрын
Different varieties developed based on when you sow. Winter usually late sep/oct and spring in march. Winter varieties tend to yield more but cost more to grow, due to extra pesticides and fungicides

Round bales are stone age now. 8×4×3 are what everyone wants now. Small square are bronze age.
@gerry64203 ай бұрын
@@anthonymccluskey3822not everyone wants big squares. They don’t suit every man. I’ve no bother selling rounds. And make few 1000 wee squares for customers every year. I do well out of them. I’d rather wee squares my self for the feeder. Very handy and don’t mind working at them 👍 Stone Age was before Bronze Age. So surely the wee squares would be stone age 😂

@@Jack-cb5qg use a pre wash de-greaser on tractor and tires pre washing. It gets 10-15 minutes to settle, then hot water power washer . Doing every inch of the Tyre wall. Come up like new. Windows and paint work usually need a sponge down to get every then spotless.

@Shane_O3 ай бұрын
Someone far brighter than I stated “Stupidity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results” ….. at that yield per acre, and the financial losses involved? Maybe it’s time to think again! Farming is in big trouble unless something changes. UK and Ireland…. Same in the wider EU.
@gerry64203 ай бұрын
Yea you’re not wrong. The price is the biggest issue. It needs to be high enough to cover years like the last 2 years where weather gap played a huge role in how your crops yield. Farmers can’t continue to produce at a loss. 🤷♂️
