Winter Bushcraft Shelter Build - Overnight Camping, Raised Bed, Natural Shelter, Fire Reflector

Kusk Bushcraft

Күн бұрын

Preparing for the winter, I build a small bushcraft camp. I build a natural shelter, a raised bed, and a fire pit with a fire reflector wall.
My sleep kit includes two 100% wool blankets. I folded both in half, used one as my sleep pad and slept underneath the other (two layers of wool under me and two layers on top). I stayed warm and comfortable all night.
Temperature during this trip:
High: 5 degrees Celsius
Low: -3 degrees Celsius
I made the raised bed out of small diameter pine trees to make the bed have a bit of spring to it. In the future I will craft a sleep pad and use that on my trips instead of a blanket.
The wood pack frame is holding up great, and is a pleasure to hike with in the woods.
Fully loaded for this trip it weighed 20 lbs.
I used my waxed cloth tarp as the "pack" to carry all of my smaller items (cook kit, kettle, food, matches, string, sewing case, saw, honing stone) then used small diameter cord to lash it to the pack frame.
I will be hand sewing a canvas pack soon that will get lashed permanently onto the wood pack frame.
The shelter frame was made from well seasoned pine poles from dead-standing pine.
After the frame was built, I gathered dead spruce boughs and covered the frame with them.
Last I gathered ground moss and covered the whole shelter with the moss.
The shelter is waterproof and will offer good protection from snow storms throughout the winter.
I tested the strength of the frame with my body weight and it held solid despite the weight. I have no doubt it will be able to withstand heavy snow accumulation.
If you have any questions or comments please leave them below.
Thank you to all who watch.

I loved this video. No chitchat, just straight to the point of what the video is about. One thing I want to correct that gets used on most bushcraft videos is the alleged fire "reflector". Dark-colored objects can not reflect heat or light but absorb it. Back in my boy scout days, we called it what it is, a windbreak. That is what keeps the heat in that area as the wind can not blow it away. I know that I am going to get some backlash from some folks who bought into the whole misconception. But truth is truth.
@CBlargh
@CBlargh 4 жыл бұрын
No lash, forward or back! I think that sounds correct, though the radiation would be mostly infrared, regardless... By putting it on the other side of the fire from you, it absorbs the IR that would have otherwise been lost and sends IR back your way... and keeps the wind from blowing your fire out... ;) The wolves were terrifying at 13:52. Is this in Canadia? I didn't notice a location...

I loved the wolves! We occasionally get a pack passing through our area en route to Canada, but alas they never stay here. Wolves tend not to disturb humans as long as we aren't threatening them; but I do always keep a close eye on my small dog whenever we're outside. And she's never out alone, because a wolf might grab a small pet, and also we have foxes and raptors around here all year, and owls who could easily mistake her for a rabbit (as you can see, she's tiny). But I do love falling asleep to the music of the wolves.
@chrisbanbury
@chrisbanbury 4 жыл бұрын
If it absorbs radiation then it will warm up. If it warms up then it will radiate heat which is effectively a reflector.

Jesus (God the Son): My heart aches when the ones who I govern live in the midst of sin. They do not even know it is sin until the sins they commit pile higher and become a tall strong tower. But I will forgive everyone who breaks down their tower, becomes cleansed, and comes to me. Your pains are my pains. Your suffering becomes my suffering. Everyone who lives in the midst of sin, quickly repent and come back to me. My path is straight and my bosom is wide and deep. I have expressed all my love for mankind. Interesting for a semi-permeant camp. I can see that my Council Tool Wood-Craft 19" axe and Bob Destrude buck saw would work well on this project. SUGGESTIONS: 1. Parallel lash A-shaped poles then twist into A shape. Much stronger means of joining them. 2. Lay a bed of leaves or evergreen boughs before laying the "floor" poles for better insulation and lack of drafts. 3. Hate to say this because it is not "bushcraft" natural materials but the best "door" for this shelter would be a piece of 4 mil clear plastic drop cloth. It will permit the heat from the nice reflector fire to enter the shelter while keeping out drafts, snow and rain. I have used this for winter lean-to construction with a reflector fire.

Beautiful job - After constructing the frame, you could put down a survival blanket, reflective side facing fire, or a length of window shrink plastic (polycryo), to trap a little more heat or if expecting rain or sleet. Could also face the reflector with foil or aluminum facing - I enjoy the way these light up my site a bit. Keep ‘em coming!

Really liked the cinematography, soft focus shots were nice as were the dusk segments. I loved the different tones the sticks made when you pounded them into the ground too. Thanks for sharing, great vid, subbed.

Heard the wolves! Those and the bed would have been two reasons I wouldn't have got a wink of sleep! Otherwise, I love the set-up. I've only seen reflector fire in books but always admired the idea, That could easily be turned into a self-feeding all night fire. Thanks for sharing!

I used to work security building behind a car showroom. They had this car they couldn't sell for love nor money that had a hair trigger on the alarm. It used to go off 15-20 times a day from about feb to aug when they finally got rid of it. That was 1998.... To this day, some of the local birds still mimic that damn car alarm in their songs.

It would be interesting to see after it's snow-covered, whether or not it will insulate enough so that you could have a fire in front of it and not have any snow melt through onto your bedding. That moss might do the trick
@richard_n
@richard_n 4 жыл бұрын
@@hermit6208 Moss is a good insulator and sheds water pretty good since it will absorb the first amount and swell up like a sponge making it hard for further water to get through.

No doubt they want us to believe it's time to bug out. It's part of the plan. All of it is a set up. This is useful information, survival is always useful. However don't worry too much MSM wants you to be afraid, it weakens you. Don't feed into the fear. Stay strong brother and keep on learning and practicing your skills. It is good to help your family & loved ones be prepared as well.
