Hello to the wonderful people in Maine, from Newfoundland! My dad got very ill on a road trip nearly 30 years ago, and spent two weeks at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Loverly stuff, as usual. I'm a beer junkie, myself. But I have learned that beer on the trail comes with two penalties: the weight to carry (a price I've too often been willing to pay), and the fact that I end up having to get up to pee too many times during the night (which is ok, that is until the temp turns south of zero). These days, whether I travel by bike, or by foot, I stick to whisky or rum (mmmm, the dark liquors...). Canoe camping, on the other hand, is a totally different ball of wax... You're allowed to have fires along the ECT as long as you move off the trail a bit. I forget what the distance is but it's no where near 2 or 3 kms, I know I read it somewhere, probably on the trail map.
