Right now all my greenhouse plants are under a thick layer of fleece, we are dropping below 0c every night with very sunny days, days aren't really going above 8c though but it's getting veryy hot in my greenhouse because of the sun haha. For me to get daily frost for the amount of time im forecast isn't too common but I enjoy it
@CactusCaffeine2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! That is cold. One thing I struggle in winter too is cold weather and yet the sun is all out in the morning. Since they are dormant, some can't really handle the sun and they turn yellow. Oh the life of a cactus! haha.

To prevent mold, I spray my pots with a 50/50 bleach/water solution whenever watering - careful to not spray plant. The mostly clear dried residue forms a "seal" that inhibits regrowth of mold. The bleach itself evaporates away within hours. No more "fuzzy" pots!

Really BRILLIANT video Ana :-D and fantastic tips on caring for cacti over the Winter months, we have had this Winter in Ireland so crazy mild, and so much rain haha, I have a lot of Cacti and Succulent plant jobs to do as so many are needing a good clean up and pruning and I have noticed more dreaded Beastie mealy bugs starting to appear on the plants in the polytunnel, and Slugs hiding under the tables argh, thanks so much for sharing this fantastic Winter care video Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a terrific Tuesday today XXXX

It is good that your winter is mild so far. But I guess those pests are loving your mild weather too. Ugh! Good luck with them Lyn. I haven’t had a problem with slugs but it sounds as terrible as mealies. 🙁

Very informative video, Ana! Loved seeing your plants again. I used the yellow sticky paper before but lizards got trapped and were not able to struggle out alive. I felt so bad so I stopped using them. I now rely on my spider friends to take care of the pesky gnats. 😆

Edith! Butiki ang nahuli mo? LOL! I don't miss those lizards. I hate lizards. I know they eat insects but they used to fall on me in our house in Manila or wake me up with their sounds. Grrrr. That's why I hate any form of lizards. hahaha.

As always very beautiful collection. I moved my cactus inside my house for the winter. Not sure how cold they can handle. The lowest so far in Southwest Tx is 30 *. What’s the coldest they can handle? I sometimes move them back outside to get some sunlight. Thank you for your videos .

Be careful when it drops below freezing. I would protect them. Some opuntias can handle freeze. But most other types of cacti cannot. Good luck! ☺️

Thanks Ana!! Great reminder!!! Got a couple of Euphorbias that need the dead leaves brushed off. And yes, those beasties don't take a break!! It's a good time to check around!! Scale & spider mites seem to be the ones really giving my plants a hard time. Lost all my adult Ariocarpus fissuratus to cactus scale. I treated them back in the late summer. While it did kill out the infestation. They were too weak to recover. I have only 4 seedlings left. May attempt to graft one later on. I think the only way to keep some of these rare plants from scale is to make sure they are clean, then put them on a hanging basket to keep them away from every other plant!! I've found plants on hanging shelves & baskets don't have scale ever. Thanks for sharing Ana!!! Great winter plant activities!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful evening!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🏵🌴🌺🪴🌹🌲🌷🌳💐😃👍

Great content as as always, here's a little tip: you can soak the mosquito bits in water for around 20 minutes and water your plants, tried it myself, instant results

Can you repot when the cactus is dormant? Or do you suggest to wait til spring season??
@michellec.49942 жыл бұрын
I repotted last year in winter.. and it didn't bother my cactus... its actually growing.. its a mammallaria type. 🥰🥰🥰
@CactusCaffeine2 жыл бұрын
It is always best to repot any plant while they are actively growing. While some will not mind it (like your Mammillaria), others are more sensitive. When in doubt, wait till spring. 😉

@CactusCaffeine Жыл бұрын
70 degrees is still a little warm. Your cacti may not go fully dormant so you may need to still water lightly but less frequently.

I tried but it made the temperature drop in my garage and my little heater doesn’t blow strong air. But I’m not too worried. The sticky traps do a good job at controlling them. 🙂 Thanks DC!
