it's an awesome job and a very daunting job. but it is doable as you are learning everyday with every boulder you pull out of a ditch. Mosquito repellent - dryer sheet is the best kind I know the other stuff just don't work. I've been in Panama I know.

I gutted and rebuilt a house largely on my own, but that's in a city with water and sewer... and it's been a major struggle of unexpected overruns of time and money. I can relate to the pain, but starting from scratch as you have is so so much more. BUT you'll get done and eventually you can look back and be proud of it, trust me. Keep at it, do it right so you only have to do it once (SERIOUSLY), and keep making videos!

My wife and i hand dug our 43' 3" deep trench for our rv dump 5 years ago. I remember we started at 6am every morning and worked till around 11am, when i would shower and go to work and my wife would then take care of being mom of two kids, household chores, cooking and cleaning. It was rough work. Jessie you are strong and our wives are even stronger. Dont let the trolls eat at you. You're a very inspiring team. A mile is walked one step at a time. Take care of yourselves and start at first light to stay ahead of the heat. DON'T EVER GIVE UP!!!

You guys are awesome!! You have the hardest working wife! A few years back we were building a welded garage out of 4" tube steel. We would get up and work as soon as we could see, 5am - 2pm, and the temp would be 92 at sun up and 106 at 2pm (July). Stop for a few hours and get started again at 6pm and work until 10pm or midnight. We did that night after night for a month. The only part I didn't do was pour the slab foundation. So I can say, "I know how you feel!" You will be so proud when it is finished. All I can say looking back is that it was all worth it. I'm still excited to tell people, "We built our house and built the garage ourselves." Hang in there! It is all good.

My husband and I admire you guys so much. I'm 56 and my husband is 61. We were both raised with the outlook of "if you want it, you build it. My grandparents built a one acre pond with shovels, buckets and a wheelbarrow. He built a poured concrete home. He built forms, for every single wall (inside and out), floors too. He loved concrete and built that home, a block building, and a set of brick apartments. As kids we were good labor and we willingly helped. The biggest equipment he had was a tractor, and a cement mixer. We bought an older home and all of our improvements have been by our hands. Our first garden here was accomplished by a mattock, shovel, rake and hoe, and we bought here in 2010, not when we were your age. I can see all of your frustrations, and have felt the weariness in your eyes. But I can also see the sense of accomplishment there as well. Don't give up. I admire both of you and wish more people today had your work ethic.

Things will become better as soon as you are out of the ground. Your gravity feed water system with cistern is clever. For my rain water collectiion system with cistern, I rely on an electircal pump - no electricity, no flushing the toilet anymore.... You won't have that problem. Regarding the price, I think around 10000 dollars, is not that off. I paid around 4500 dollars for my rainwater collection system and the cistern is about 10 feet away from my house. The pipes are rather short and partly double encased. The guy, who sold the system didn't want to fully encase the poly lines, because he feared, it could flood our basement through the encasement. One more thing that I learned during building our house - As non-professional you might end up doing things three times, until it is right. But then, it is better than any professional would have done it.

Tip for stickering wood: Make sure your sticks are lined up vertically and the whole line of stickers is supported to the ground or in the case at 5:27 a big beam. This will keep your lumber straighter! It's been fun following along, keep up the motivation!

Keep going, you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Speaking from experience. On my first mother's day I learned how to mix cement. We started with a house trailer. Hubby wanted to put cement pads under the trailer so the wood ties would not sink down in the ground and rot. Who knew that in a few years we would later take out the cement pads out so we could put a cement block foundation under and turn it into a house. After thirty years and dozens of projects later we are still at it. Now we are replacing items, like roof shingles and several windows. I'm starting to believe if we do finish everything we are done for. All I can really say is that we are debt free because we did as we had the money. Stick to it.

I have been watching for awhile and I remember when you first got to the site. What progress you have made since then. I have been down the same road but basically by myself for 80 percent of the journey. It can be done but time and money are tremendous factors. You remind me of my husband and I, when we first moved here. Only, the equipment we had to use was wheelbarrows and hand tools. Working from sun up to sun down, was not uncommon. It really tests your physical limitations. Just keep telling yourselves, the end goal is nice, but you need to breathe your way through every step. Take in the experience, rather than tell yourselves it will never end. As hard as this ordeal is, once it's done, it's amazing how quickly the gruelling days are forgotten. And what you will have to remember, is the experience. You'll remember the joke about needing more rocks, and the aches and pains will be faded. Great work guys.
