2021 was my first year of following the lovelies of the Great Lakes, so this scene of all these magnificent ships all snuggled together for the winter kind of takes my breath away. Have always loved ships and respect their beauty. Really appreciate your videos Mark. ❤🚢

That dry dock looked so huge when the Mark W. Barker was built in there, now that the Mesabi Miner is in there it looks just big enough.

Great video! I liked the short "behind the scenes" shot of your drone taking off and heading over to the ships. Thanks for the video, it is interesting to see all the ships there for winter layup and whatever repairs/upgrades that need to be done.

Really great video! Thanks for identifying the ships. The drone footage is super. We were fortunate enough to spend several days at a cottage on St. Joseph Island a few years ago. The property fronted on the channel and it was fantastic to watch the big freighters pass by. So glad we found this site!

Another great video! What happens to the cargo the ships would normally carry while they are docked for winter?
@mattharper588

All of the customers that the ships carry product for from coal,taconite,salt,etc plan ahead and stock up on their product for the winter because they do this every year
@theplaneimage
@theplaneimage 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattharper588 Thank you for the reply, Matt. I was thinking more of the "producers" of the cargo, rather than the customers. If your mine produces coal or iron ore or salt or whatever, surely they don't stockpile or send by road, if that were even an option. ... or do they slow down production while the ships are docked for winter? I'm not trying to be obtuse, I'm genuinely interested in how they manage the movement of their product when the ship option isn't available? Thanks Matt.
@mattharper588
@mattharper588 2 жыл бұрын
@@theplaneimage because they do this every year they stockpile enough of the product to get them through the winter the Soo Locks close every year on January 16 and open March 16 so they have enough product for that time frame and usually more

@theplaneimage 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattharper588 That explains it! Thanks Matt 👍

@mattharper588 2 жыл бұрын
@@theplaneimage also the company’s that produce the product say like the taconite mines will still operate through the winter and store the product at their facility until the shipping season starts again when the locks open they will start shipping it again
