Lord Fairhaven wanted to leave the house in a lived in condition and I think they have managed to follow his wishes. The House has a lot of interest and parts look as if the occupants had just stepped out in the sixties, especially in the servants areas. We have only been into the House once but have visited the garden many times. That winter walk is really special at this time of year. The amount of colour is amazing and on a first visit so unexpected. Great to see the daffs. Ours are not yet open but just a matter of days now I think. On that winter walk we particularly like the different colours of the tree trunks and the new colourful new growth of the bushes. You have got me wanting to drive over right now! Hi Ivor thank you so much for your comments. The colours they have in the garden are truly wonderful the video doesn't quite capture the full extent of it. They have planted in large swathes so you get a wonderful bank of colour. The reds and yellows of the dogwood and then the silver from the birches are spectacular nature's own light show. We had been before at other times of year but was our first time along the winter walk at this time of year and it took our breath away. The inside of the house was beautiful and the history was interesting that you told. Winter Garden: 0:35: Showing my ignorance again... what are these, please? 1:02: That's a good idea! So often, I think of winter as a "dead time" when it comes to plants - holly, ivy, mistletoe... and the odd snowdrop - and that's about it! (I'd never even heard of "winter orange" and "red dogwood", for example - and I'd thought that a snowdrop was just a snowdrop; certainly not 400 varieties!) 1:12-1:28: All that colour as early as February: generally, the coldest month; certainly would have made me feel better at that time of year, too! Abbey: 2:41: Wow - so bright! 3:03-3:18: I agree - the clock is beautiful. 5:00-5:14: Yes - you can see how old the Dining Room looks. Interesting juxtaposition don't you think, though? I mean, many people associate the life of a monk with asceticism: all that self-denial... But a Dining Room: that's more of a place of consumption and enjoyment. (Well... that's how I think of such a place, anyway!) 5:59-6:39: I do like tapestries - as I think you know by now! 6:42-6:45: Why the barred door, to the left? 7:58: A Bush radio: I grew up with one in the '60s. (Did you?) Anyway, I bought a retro-looking Bush a few months ago, purely for nostalgia - sadly, its innards don't look the same. (And... no Radio Luxembourg!😿) One question: I wonder what the main factors behind people like Lord Fairhaven leaving such substantial properties to The National Trust are...? Not complaining, or anything; just trying to work out why...? (Tax/estate problems? Family disputes re: inheritance? A desire to bequeath something to the country, as a whole? A combination of all three, perhaps?) What are your thoughts?

Good morning Phil those purple flowers were crocus. We really love snowdrops, if you look closely there are quite a variety some have lovely green markings others yellow the more you look the more variety you see. We were amazed how colourful this walk was We intend to visit again this year its one of the best winter gardens we know. The bush radios definitely instil a lot of memories shame about radio luxumberg 😆 . There are many reasons why the houses are handed to the trust but mostly it was the continual death duties and I suspect a number were built from funds raised in eras where wealth had accumulated from exploitation of either the working classes or from the empire. We feel it's good that these are now in the hands of the trust and so can be enjoyed by everyone. There are always lots of families especially on the larger estates enjoying the gardens and grounds.
