The scarf around the hood thing is easily explained. Firstly, it keeps your hood intact when the wind blows with snow so you don’t need to readjust it that often. Secondly, when it gets to minus temperatures the part at the front of your scarf that is close to the face and mouth becomes icy and moist of warm breath in cold air. Therefore, it is better to keep your scarf further away to avoid touching your face and experiencing that damp material. I personally would also wear a turtleneck under the coat or a thinner scarf so the neck is nice and warm. Hope that makes sense 😊

Personally, doesn't feel much difference between -10 and -20. 0C is a nightmare to go around as water and melting snow is everywhere. -30 is where it can be scary, but that's my perfect Winter. Personally, I prefer to wear my scarves on the outside. The ones I’m usually wearing are really big and warm, they wouldn’t fit inside jackets and coats. They help me keep my hood up and also work as a sort of face shield against the wind. Of course, I would recommend wearing something like a turtleneck underneath as well.

Same leather boots here. When it gets colder try to put on some layers of clothes to create more air pockets between them. Also, make sure that your boots, coat, and pants are not tight when you put on more layers (that's why its good to have winter boots and coat a bit bigger)

It's nice to see that you're enjoying the weather so far. :) Personally, when it comes to footwear, I think that waterproofing and covering ankles are two most important things for the cold season. Since a lot of people get around by car and walk just from home to the car and from car to the office it's fine to rock the sneakers. If it is above freezing temperatures waterproofing is a must and if it's below, covering ankles is recommended to avoid snow getting over the top :) . If you have both you're prepared for anything :)

The scarf in the outside. Haven't worn that since childhood. I have 2 older brothers (9 and 10 years older than me) so they put a turtleneck on me, a coat with a scarf outside to trap the warmth inside and then we played in the snow and it never dripped inside, even when I rolled around. 😄
@gtheavyy85433 жыл бұрын
In minus temperatures, snow is not wet. You don't have to worry about some snow landing on your scarf; you can just dust it off before coming back indoors. Sure it will be a little moist, but far from being damp. Scarf around the hood is a preference thing. In addition to arguments below, it also helps to "raise" the neck coverage; I sometimes find it hard to cover my cheeks without that. Also, you don't have to be as tight; if your jacket fits well you might have trouble fitting a thick scarf under it.

In fact, some of those elegant, light-looking women shoes are really warm, with Goretex and similar stuff. And I like winter a lot, hiking in the snowy forest is tough to beat :)

about boots : if I'm going for a walk I usually wear biker boots ( like dr martens or something like that) but when its cold and slippery, and have to sit for longer times- like bus rides between cities) i usually wear warm work boots, cuz they warm, not slippery and give great comfort feeling for feet too. The scarf indeed gets a little wet, but with wind and snow and rainy-wet-snow, it's better having a wet scarf rather than having wet hair, wet face and gaps, nooks and crannies for snow to pile up, and then melt...:) (Also, when temp drops to -20 or -30, the air you breathe in gets warmer). Our winters are quite windy sometimes and the scarf trick helps with that too

well, i use my "demi-season" crocks during such winter - same as in summer. But when temperature stays bellow -10C during the day i use some boots with better heat isolation. Of course if you are outside not moving and temp is below minus 10-15C you should have some kind of boots like you have in this video :). Thank you for enjoying Lithuania and doing all this input! But for the hunt of real winter fairy-tale you should visit locations further North, i say in January - February. From my own experience Finland and Norway would do. Most probably Sweden as well but i didnt check it by myself. As an example, there is a big electric goods fair kept in Jyvaskylla, Finland every two years in the first week of February (and next year too!) and i was participating there few times. Booking hotel is always pretty hard so we decided to book a cabin outside the city by ski slope - they have some infrastructure in the woods. Imagine - i get up in the morning, come to the window to see how beautiful outside is (winter fairy-tale) and i see a reindeer like coupe meters from the window looking at me :). And these cabins have sauna, few or several bedrooms, etc.. To live a winter fairy-tale :)

I can sign up under everything in the comments about the scarves. It also drives me mad that a jacket does not zip up if a scarf is underneath. As for boots go - the cold stays only for like a week tops. SO heavy duty warmth is not necessary, what is necessary, however, is the grip for the boot and waterproof capabilities. Found my brand i've been sticking to it for the last few years (so far it lasted well over 3 seasons). My rule of thumb for winter products (clothes, automobile, leisure, whatever) - buy item made in Scandinavia, usually in Norway. They do know how to deal with winter :D Don't forget to embrace penguin walk!

I never wear my scarf around the hood, I hate feeling the zipper next to my neck. I prefer a smaller scarf or a neck sleeve (not sure what the actual term is), so that I can zip up my coat to the top (or almost to the top) over the scarf. I think the scarf over the hood thing is somewhat of a local fashion thing here in Lithuania. Regarding shoes, wearing sneakers is a bit of a fashion thing too, I think. But more people will probably start changing to their winter boots soon enough. Although there are also these sneaker-looking shoes with fur inside as well, so some people might be wearing that. A lot of women I know like to wear leather boots, also with fur inside, which often work decently against wetness too. I do that too if I'm going out for work, but if it's a walk in the nature or somewhere casual, I'll wear hiking boots, as I can be sure it'll be completely waterproof.
