The Maihaugen Ethnographic Museum is located in the Innlandet region of Norway in the city of Lillehammer.
It is the largest open-air museum in Norway and one of the largest in Northern Europe. Its rich collection includes about 200 buildings. The museum's special pride is the ancient Garmo Stave Church, which was brought here from the village of the same name near the town of Lom.
It is interesting that the founder of the museum, Anders Sandvig, initially collected exhibits from old houses in his backyard. But when his collection grew, the city council offered him a permanent place for the museum. And so in 1904, the Maihaugen Museum was founded.
It immediately became an important meeting place and place for walks for the townspeople. The residents of the Gudbrandsdalen Valley also developed traditions associated with the Maihaugen Museum. On the day of the Norwegian Constitution, people come here in national costumes and congratulate each other on the holiday. And on the eve of the summer solstice, they light bonfires and weave wreaths of wildflowers.
On the first weekend of Advent, the traditional Norwegian Christmas market is held here. The streets are beautifully decorated, and the colorful market stalls sell skillful products of artisans and holiday delicacies.
The fair takes place only 2 days a year on Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend of Advent. Therefore, it is important to plan your visit in advance and buy tickets online so as not to miss this bright and cheerful event.
It is nice that the entire territory of the museum is open for walks and if you are tired of wandering in the noisy crowd of visitors to the fair, you can take a walk along the lake or ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
Walking along Maihaugen, you will often come across fires and benches covered with skins to warm yourself up on cool December days. And to warm your soul, you can see a huge bear, who happily gives hugs to everyone who wants them!
Here and there on the museum grounds, you will find small stalls that attract your attention. It is nice that there is no bright and already boring plastic junk from China. Only high-quality handmade goods and traditional food such as apples in chocolate or porridge from a cauldron.
Also, actors in costumes from different periods walk around the museum. A postman delivering parcels in the central square, a pharmacist asking if you have any pain. You can go into many houses and see how people of different eras prepared for Christmas. This makes the Maihaugen fair unique and a must-see!
We hope our video will bring you into the Christmas spirit because we always try to take as many interesting shots as possible with us to show you different parts of Norway exactly as we see them and sincerely love them.
