Orrin, did you consider putting insulation in the joists downstairs. That way you're sealing the area you're working in you want to heat. Probably less surface area than insulating the whole roof in the attic.

We did talk about that! It’s a little less (30’ runs.) The question we had is how much will bleed through the staircase opening
