I have changed the order of the songs! I often wondered why the last few songs just did not flow easily and then I found out why. The songs in Schubert's song cycle are not in the order that the poet wrote them. The first 12 up to the Post are in the correct order and were published together but the last 12 were published as they were found, one at a time and not in the correct order, but as they were discovered. Hence the strange juxtapositions. I have always felt 'Wintereisse' was a message of hope and it seems the poet thought so too. The victims of youthful love affairs usually get over it and live on to fight another day according to the poet's order. But I have still put 'The Organ Grinder' last as it was the last song I ever sang with my husband. I only wish I could have sung this when I was young.
