I love the way you think out loud & share the decision making process. I am now looking forward to pruning my & the neighbors trees. Thank you.

Hi guys really love your video serie on Backyard Orchard Demo and always waithing on the next one. But I have a question I saw that some of your video are in HD and I would like to know why those on the Backyard Orchard are not in HD??

I'd like to see some pruning on the "older" trees.. Do you take out the saw and cut the tree way back to keep the small size trees? Eventually, I'm assuming that the main limbs are going to be very thick.

Very helpful video series. I was looking for a video on Pomegranate trees. I would really appreciate a video on how to possibly prune, fertilize etc...Thanks so much.

We love your videos! We own many of your trees. We make sure they are from your nursery before we buy. Lol good advice, always! -Modesto, CA

A question - when keeping the tree at the same height by removing one-year-old wood, how do you handle the fact that you will be left with old wood only which will not produce any fruit? Or do you still keep a bit of the last-year's growth for fruiting, thus letting the tree get a little bit bigger each year?
@DaveWilsonTrees2 жыл бұрын
New wood and fruiting spurs are created by old wood left below the desired height. I keep my trees under 8 feet and always have to thin.

@@DaveWilsonTrees Say I've got a branch that I take back to a length of one foot. Next season, I'm going to have a bunch of side branches growing from it. When I take those out too after fruiting, so that they don't crowd the inside of the tree, aren't the buds from which they grew going to be spent? Or will new branches grow next season from the same spots where the ones I took out grew?

you keep talking about fruiting wood. How do we know what fruiting wood is?

Love it.. when you say that you will re check new growth to maintain height does that mean you cut it all the way back to the past years pruning cut?
@DaveWilsonTrees11 жыл бұрын
That depends on how tall you want your tree. Pick a height, and top it back every summer. I like to check height at the same time i"m thinning fruit in spring, and then again after harvest.

This series of videos is really helpful. They have really cleared up some of my pruning questions and kept me from being paralyzed by being overly cautious. Question: Do you have any videos that track the progress of a particular tree from the time its put into the ground to the time it bears its first harvest of fruit?

We have been filming the progress of this demo orchard since we planted it in February 2011.

I planted bareroot trees in spring with leafing. Do I cut them down to knee height now or wait? Please help.

Need pruning advice 6b coastal Ma. I pruned everything June 21. Goal is to keep trees manageable at 3-4’ high. I also followed advice of Dave Wilson Tree videos , keeping center free. Now, I have all this new growth that does not appear to have any clusters where fruit would grow next year. I want to remove new growth. What is the timing of this? Should I wait till fall?
@DaveWilsonTrees4 жыл бұрын
Colleen Connor you can prune now. Then again when dormant. To keep trees that short you will need to prune two or three times during the summer. Just after fruit set when you’re thinning, then again after you harvest. Then, depending on harvest date, you may want to top again in late summer.

I am considering planting peach, pear and figs trees in the spring. Just want to clarify, I don't need to buy dwarf trees, I can control the height by pruning as you do?
@DaveWilsonTrees10 жыл бұрын
Tonya Williams That is correct.

I know I’m late finding you... I enjoy how you explain what you do & how to accomplish that. However, it was really hard to watch this due to camera focus & fast movement 😔. I’ll check out the rest of your videos tho😍.

What’s the pollinizer for flavorella, and what’s a good pollinizer for cot-n-candy?
@DaveWilsonTrees3 жыл бұрын
Gold Kist apricot works best. Cot-N-Candy Aprium is self fruitful, but can do better with pollination. I’d go with TomCot.

if you cut all that off, then where does the fruit grow from? I thought it only grows on "fruit buds" Looks like you cut them all off.

+VIheavyequipment How old are they? How often do you water them?
@John-viheavyequipment8 жыл бұрын
probably 30 years old or more its been prunned to stay about 8 feet tall we have a apple tree and another plum that produce very well. but they are not watered there just in our back yard

+VIheavyequipment Has it flowered more in the past? 30 years is pretty old. Or maybe it didn't get enough chill, where are you?
