Tom, I have a Santa Rosa that begins its branching scaffolds about waist high. I really liked your very low branching Santa Rosa. I want to cut mine back and regrow the scaffolding lower. From your video, I think it best for me to do this late summer after I have harvested my plums.

@Paulsur Do it a little at a time. Prune just after fruit set when you are thinning. Then again after you harvest the fruit, and maybe once more late summer depending on when the variety harvests.

@gkowen63 It's a good idea to disinfect your loppers before you start, and between varieties. Then clean and oil when done.

@YttriumNitrate Customize your pruning schedule to fit your needs. If you have personally experienced problems at certain times of the year then avoid those times. If you have just read about it but not experienced it then it may not be an issue at all. If your sure its a problem work around it and prune late.
@DaveWilsonTrees12 жыл бұрын
Always prune for structure and balance. If the branch is important to the structure prune it to balance the rest of the fruiting body. If it's out of balance you can remove it altogether. Look at the tree from your focal points and several different angles to determine what suites your situation best. If its the oak your referring to make sure to keep the dead wood out and lace out the growth to allow for air movement. Referred to as lace style pruning.

Tom, you mention pruning can be done at any time, but most of what I've read suggests pruning of plums should be done shortly before they come out of dormancy to reduce the likelihood of infection. I've got a number of plums coming (indirectly from your nursery, I believe) and it would be great if I could spread the pruning over the winter months, but disease seems to be a problem.

@WishingDreamer08 No, this is a stand alone video. Our old demo area is almost 20 years old, and in a field up for rotation. We have just planted a new demo area that is not in a field that will have to be taken out for rotation.

@littlepuppet69 Trees do not need to be dormant to prune. I did a survey with over a dozen commercial growers and asked them two questions. #1 "When do you prune your trees?" All answered the same. " Winter" Question #2 "Why do you winter prune?"" Because that's when we have time" Many commercial growers are now summer pruning especially stone fruits as they heal more rapidly and are less susceptible to disease during growing season. Trends change as knowledge changes. Pruning is a good example.
@DaveWilsonTrees14 жыл бұрын
@brucegoren Use that information as a guide and don't summer prune early in the season. Prune in late August or early September. Summer bloom is common all over the southwest but it usually is only a very small percentage of flower and I just blast mine off with my hose and a high pressure nozzle. Do not let summer bloom fruit remain on the tree and its not an issue.

Another great imformative video. Besides making sure your pruners are sharp, do you disinfect them to prevent disease spread?

Tom, loved watching this video again. Just finished summer pruning my "little" orchard, but I have a very important question: Can you summer prune a fig tree to keep it small? I want to add a dwarf fig tree to my little orchard, all of which have been managed to follow the Backyard Orchard culture; but having a lost a few trees, I would like to add a fig tree.
@DaveWilsonTrees3 жыл бұрын
Figs should only be winter pruned. January is best when they are completely dormant. If pruned during the growing season they secrete a milky white sap that flows to excess.

Tom, this is incredibly useful and informative. However, it contradicts many of the pruning videos on youtube. Almost all of them espouse winter pruning when the tree is dormant -- especially if you are hard-pruning. The logic being that the tree is dormant and less susceptible to injury from hard pruning. Can I hard prune in the summer? What's the advantage of summer vs winter pruning? I live in Sherman Oaks, CA. George

Another question: I have a 3 year old Fuji that's an ultra dwarf. The tree is in a pot, doing well. My question, it has 5 branches not many side branches it's about 31/2 feet tall. Can I still prune the points to encourage more branches?

Also, wqhat do you feel is the best time for me to feed aside from just before bud break. Should I early summer feed to aid fruit production? And anything besides Nitrogen?

I'm afraid to prune my apple tree and I don't understand it. I am watching a plethora of videos before I attempt it, but I will attempt it. How do I tell know in the winter which shoots are vegetative, fruit/flowering producing, dead wood, etc.? I don't know how to tell the difference. My old apple tree is severely neglected and I want to bring it down to size and open it up in a healthy way. The person who always took care of it became disabled and I learned he really didn't know what he was doing, but he thought he did so I just let him do it. Then I learned it's in pitiful shape and a lot of mistakes have been made on it and it was generally neglected. Plus I'm planting an apricot in the early spring and I want to raise and train it properly after I plant it.

Hi there, Dave! I'm in zone 7b. And you're right: pruning IS intimidating! I hired a guy to come show me how to prune a big pear which is like 25 feet high, and he said "trees don't need us to do anything to them". Needless to say, I sent him packing! About summer pruning: we have some serious hot summers here in NC. Is it still okay to do that vegetative pruning when it's super hot? And do these ideas apply to plum, apple, cherry and pear? Great video.
@DaveWilsonTrees10 жыл бұрын
Dorothy Potter Snyder As long as you're not lopping off all the foliage, the heat won't be a problem. It gets triple digit hot here every summer also. And, yes you can use BYOC techniques on all fruit trees, citrus too.

When you prune in the summer, do you do it after the fruit is removed from the tree?
@DaveWilsonTrees10 жыл бұрын
Luz Padilla I prune at the same time i'm thinning the fruit in the spring, and then again after I harvest the crop. If it's a late variety, It's fine to do size control pruning while fruit is still hanging on the tree.

Hello. It's me again! I have a question: with this past rains my one year old Santa Rosa tree had a big, opening on the upper part of the trunk with jelly like substance coming out of it. Is this bad? What am I supposed to do? The little flowers that started to put out are small and don't look that pretty
@DaveWilsonTrees9 жыл бұрын
Luz Padilla If the goo is amber in color, it's normal. If it's dark it could be an issue.
@MLucyLuna10 жыл бұрын
So, the vegetative growth will never have fruiting spurs?
@DaveWilsonTrees10 жыл бұрын
Luz Padilla Yes it will eventually. Much more important to prune for size control and keep the fruiting wood where it is manageable for you.
