Totally agree with you. The only trick is to dress properly. I prefer to run comfortably cool in other words I dress more towards 20-25 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the feels like temperature. Though I do stick to loop trails or places where I can pop in somewhere if I get too cold. That way if I do get too cold I can adjust my clothing.

I love running in bad weather. Rain, storms, heavy snow. Most often I'm the only one running in weater like that. Using the Silva Trailrunner because its good light, long batterylife, can handle the bad weather and doesnt weigh much. Sometimes when its been really, really cold, I use my compression calf-sleeves, neoprene kneewarmers, short running tights and to layer of long running tights. An bring my UD lightweigt raingear (trousers and jacket) in a pack. On my head I use my helmet cap and a buff. If snowstorm I use a cap.

The only thing I don’t like about winter running (western Canada) is the ground conditions. Hard black ice, slippery snow pack, clear dry pavement and slippery loose sand and gravel. And that’s all in the first few kilometers! Cleats are an option but hate them on dry pavement so I take smaller steps, and always be ready to fall so when I do it’s more gracefully and not straight down on my tailbone or wrist.

It cannot be raining when it's cold. In winter running best option is to wear cross-country skiing clothes. I have done long runs in snow on frozen Baltic Sea in -25C in windy conditions and been perfectly fine in skiing clothes. The most problematic issue is with gloves. even when you wear thick gloves, fingers can get cold at some point of the run. So basically one should carry one extra pair of gloves.

Some tips from me because nobody asked :D (UK based, coldest we've seen this winter is -5c so far, but I've lived in the Canadian Rockies in -30c as well) - You're probably going to get wet, EMBRACE IT! If you try and fight it you'll lose and end up having a bad time. You'll start to have a lot more fun when you realise you can stay warm & comfortable no matter how wet you get, as long as you dress right. - Even with the most expensive waterproofs you can find you will still get wet, even just from sweating, so maybe save those for a less intense activity when staying dry is more important. - AVOID COTTON (it get's cold when wet and stays cold) but try not to get caught up in the hype of Nike/Adidas etc materials. Ronhill is a great option amongst others: Asics, North Ridge, Higher State - Combine 2/3 thin layers (Jacket counts as a layer on rough days) they trap warmth efficiently and are easy to shed/re-apply through varying conditions. - Wind chill will bite you on the ass, literally. Wind will be a key factor for feeling chilly, especially if you're wet, so try and keep an eye out for light "windproof" clothing (most polyester tops have a natural windproof-ness I've found) plus the accessories Ben pointed out, covering ears is crucial for me! - 2 or 3 pairs of good socks to rotate. These will be the first thing to get wet alongside your shoes & they'll stay wet. Materials like Merino or Coolmax/Polyester blends are great for this. They should have low friction on your skin & they'll retain your body heat, similar to a surfer in a wetsuit! Like Ben said, heat will be lost via your head, hands & feet. I have been using some mid weight Bridgedale hiking socks in the absence of running socks, they're toasty but breathable & are very durable! Hope this can help some nervous runners, as long as you're dressed right you'll have a great time :) keep adventuring & stay safe out there!

Thanks for another excellent video Ben. Re the head torches, as a glasses wearer I've found that a head torch can reflect on my glasses, especially when wet. I decided to try a chest mounted torch which has a red light at the rear and it's brilliant. I run in some quite dark areas so do need it to see as well as being seen. Not sure if any other viewers experience the same as me. Keep up the great work Ben :-)

Agree on the gore tex point, especially in the north. Gore tex or not, all shoes have a rather large hole in them that will let water in when you end up in a bog. Better to have shoes that drain said bog water rather than retain it.
@BenParkes
@BenParkes 4 жыл бұрын
Yes.. I've found that once water is inside a gore-tex shoe, it stays there.. but regular shoes drain and get back to being ok again quicker. Gore-tex maybe good for a walk on a rainy day etc, but have never found them to be good running shoes

My cycling gloves are also welcoming at that temperature for sure. Where I live, Northeastern Portugal, things can easily drop to around -5 ºC during the Winter.

Hi Ben, great video. I've been following you for months now and have both your buffs which are great. Just an observation/ criticism with your filming. I don't know if you realise or it's deliberate, but you seem to cut yourself off when you're moving on to another topic and then the music overlay is quite loud. It would be better production wise to fade the music in slowly as you're above to move topic so you don't get cut off. It's quite annoying. Great content as always keep it up. 👍🏻

As someone who likes the treadmill (yes really lol) I'd say just do your regular workouts and use an incline of 1% when running faster than 7 min/mile. If you get bored easily pyramid sessions are a great option because pressing buttons often makes the time go by more quickly. My favourite session is 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 @ 3k - 10k effort with 2 min recovery after each interval. The "Even Steven Workout" is a good one too, just google it.

Hey Ben, a few people in the running world I follow are talking about scaling back on the more intense, speed based training and using the "off" winter season to build an aerobic base with plenty of easy runs, tempo runs, long runs and maybe with the odd hills sessions thrown in or something. What kind of training in the colder months do you recommend?
@BenParkes
@BenParkes 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon! I recommend people doing what they want to do at the end of the day. Should try do plan training based on what you want to get out of running, rather than doing something just because someone else is doing it. But it's always great to see what others are planning though and for me I'll spend a lot of time doing easier base building work as well! Just think ahead 1, 2 or 3 months and see what goals you might have (not easy right now I know) then you can start to put together a plan of how you want to get there.. All the best with your winter of training Jon!!

Come to Russia and try to run in winter time. When it's -25, -30 °C 😁

Yeah, You feel like a snowman 'cause all the clothes you must wear. My advice always has been not to run below -25°C. It is a serious asthma risk if you inhale too cold air into your system.

whats the minimum temperature for wearing shorts? I want to wear them as long as i can because i dont really like leggings
@kierenkd
@kierenkd 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the humidy. In the UK, I reckon about 6 degrees. I ran in minus 10 in shorts (parkrun) in Poland but humidity was less. It's also pace dependant - quality runs will keep you warm. Recovery runs bring slower so you might want to wrap up.

Maybe not waterproof shoes, but waterproof socks - now you're talking. Sealskinz are ace, get them on your Xmas list. Or just get them. You're welcome.

have to disagree i got a terrex trail running goretex and got caught in a bad rain / the only thing that was dry by the end of it was my feet
@sys4008

I really don't like to hear gore tex dies not with it I love my gore tex terrex , just been out in massive snow plus snowing run into a pothole kicking wet watery snow etc and came home with dry feet after a 10k. If you have submerged situations coming up maybe not but i went out in uk London winter and rain with these gore tex shoes and dry feet is a guarantee
