I think personal security is even more important when it’s dark in the winter. That can include always running with your phone despite the weight! Also setting Garmin accident alerts on your watch and telling flatmates or family when you’re due back. Run with someone else rather than alone if you can. I know it’s not nice to think about unpleasant things happening and it’s far more likely that women are at risk but I think it’s worth mentioning. Sorry if this is a bit of a depressing comment.

True, but I sometimes think evil criminal types don’t have the character to brave bad weather, so you might be safer from them.

Oddly enough, and I'm not much of a drinker but decided to have a glass of wine about 7pm and wondered outside to the hack door into the rain finding it really peaceful. A guy stopped his car and asked how much it would be to come into my house. Being a Yorkshire/Irish lass, I threatened to kick the shit out of him and he disappeared. Why do we have to go through this???

I love cold weather running, -2°c is a dream! Especially compared to the summer. In cold weather you can always go out fully wrapped and reduce layers as needed as opposed to summer where stripping too much will end in arrest!

I love running winter running. I really prefer it over summer running. That being said, my biggest tip -- especially for the dudes -- is to double up on the undies. I've learned that the hard way. And yes, I will take a rest day if there is the threat of ice or the temp is below 10F. I'll pretty much run through anything but if it is dangerous or I am going to injure myself, I can take a rest day. But I've been known to go running while it is snowing sideways. All good advice Ben. Love your videos.

My biggest problem is ice and compacted snow 😕 I run around 100km a week, 6 days a week, almost all year, but the ‘almost’ is because I get totally hemmed in for several weeks in Jan/Feb. I rented a treadmill last winter, but it hurt my knees too much. My answer this year is just to not book any spring races so I don’t get stressed out stuck indoors, but it’s still annoying to lose training time because of it. My cousin broke his leg really badly slipping on ice and he was just walking!

Already not enjoying the cold dark evenings - mainly because it takes running in parks off the cards for me. However I'm lucky to still have the flexibility to work from home which makes extended lunch runs an option so I can get out in the daylight and then just work longer days :)

If I’ve planned to go out and the weather is bad, I will go out (unless it’s dangerous). It can always be worse if you leave it until tomorrow, and if it isn’t, then you’ve got a run banked in tough conditions! 💪

Great tip about the dry robe, Ben. One tip I would suggest is that if you know you will be running them next day and the weather is going to be rubbish….. then prepare your kit the day before. There have been occasions where I have started to talk myself out of going out for the run as I search for the appropriate kit. If it’s all ready for you it means there is less time to over think/talk yourself out of heading out there!

Ben, now living and working in Montréal Canada the weather can sometimes shift mid run especially in winter. I have successfully adopter merino wool tops at various thicknesses to provide layers during my runs and have now adopted these for my beanie hats ( bobble hats) and socks with great effect. Even if I get wet and sweat I still remain warm. Will you consider using merino wool in any of your merchandise?

Hm, I actually like running all year long and also enjoy running in the winter. No need for extra motivation. 😜 With the right gear/clothing it is no problem. Nike Shield shoes always have great traction outsoles for wet and slippery conditions and keep your feet warm for example👍🏻.

Ben, do you think you could an in depth video about cross training? I have started including more biking into my training, but not sure if I'm doing it right!
@crayontom96873 жыл бұрын
My advice, for what it’s worth, is that cross training is great for any low intensity / easy days and can also be good for the long run days also. I had IT band syndrome a couple of years ago and couldn’t run any of the long stuff or the recovery stuff as the volume would cause too much pain. So I was in the gym on the cross trainer a lot. However, I did run the track sessions and tempo runs. The cross training enabled me to focus on those quality sessions. Anyway, long story short, I finished that season with a 73 minute half marathon, so it can work, if you do it right

Sorry but if you are still wearing shorts, then it is not cold. I know that in the UK it is damp and may feel cold but I live in Canada where winter temperatures are frequently between minus 30 to minus 40. I have to wear a lot more layers as well as 2 or 3 hats including a balaclava. I do agree though that even running in those temperatures I am sweating a lot by the time I get home even though it is not possible to run fast in the snow and ice

This is why im asking for a treadmill this christmas

I find I run faster on very cold days. I am not sure whether it has anything to do with metabolic efficiency, or just me making more effort so I stay warm.

You are lucky that you live in the UK, in my country during all winters we have terrible air pollution :( all because of using coal for home heating. That's the biggest problem, I'm using smog masks, but it's hard with them, blocks too much air.
