As the guy who designed the 5e-crunch, GM-notes, etc. for that edition, I'd like to thank you for the kind words. 5e indeed requires precise and more complex verbiage than B/X, particularly since Dolmenwood thrives on unique encounters. The animated objects, for example? They could all have had the same attack type, but I instead elected to be true to the spirit of the setting and Gavin's designs, and included different attacks for different objects. Anyhow, thank you once more! *takes a bow*

I've run this module a few times. It's got a little too much complexity for young young players (like, 5-8 year olds), but is pretty good as an intro to old school play for 10+ year olds. They understand the fairy tale setting pretty quickly. Edit: I used Beyond the Wall for running it, more HP per character is helpful for newer players playing a one-shot.

I LOVE BtW and that is the system I use with my children
@mandodelorian46685 жыл бұрын
Yeah, BtW is great, I've run it a few times. My players *love* the character generation, we've even used it for 5e characters as well. They form strong bonds right from the start of the campaign and Winter's Daughter does look like it'd be a really good fit.

I'm interested in trying RPGs with my 5 year old. Are there any particular adventures you've noticed a child around that age might enjoy?

Your reviews are PURE GOLD! I've stumbled upon your channel a while ago and I was pretty surprised with the quality of content. Watched all your videos, and I regularly binge-watch all your videos once every couple of weeks. Great reviews, great choice of books. Overall, this channel is 11 out of 10! Keep up the great work!

I ran the OSE version for players new to D&D (they prefer OSE because they said 5E was too complicated when we tried it). It is a good introductory adventure (mostly), particularly for younger players and players who are less interested in violence and more in story and roleplaying. The human sacrifice at the beginning is an issue, particularly because the cultists are very powerful and can wreck a low level party. However, they are completely optional because the scene has nothing to do with the story. I left it in but I changed the human sacrifice to something less sinister. The adventure is very short, and it can be very straightforward because a couple of NPCs will tell the party exactly what to do. My group took several weeks because they were new, but you could get through this in 4 hours quite easily. There is almost no combat as written, the main part of the quest being more about searching for clues. Once again, there is an easy TPK as written if the party decides to fight rather than look for clues. I had to telegraph everything much more than written to help them understand what their options were, and I had to make the clues easier to see. The lack of combat could be a concern for some groups. Most rooms have no encounter of any kind in them, they are just mysterious. In fact, my newbie roleplaying party complained about a lack of action mid way through so I added a couple more combat encounters, including a brief encounter with an image of the big bad, who you otherwise do not meet in this adventure. Make no mistake, despite the lack of combat and fairy-tale feel, this is definitely an old school adventure - there are a few situations that can result in death or severe permanent debility, either through combat with foes you are not really meant to fight or through poison. Overall I would say this is an excellent adventure for players who prefer to think rather than fight. It is not challenging at all if the party roleplays and looks to avoid conflict. It looked like a good module for players new to D&D, but with hindsight I feel that is only true if you telegraph the danger much more obviously and give the players more hints. Of course, with it being an OSR adventure, it is relatively easy to change it. It can also slot neatly into any world that permits some localized plane-shifting or "fey" magic.

Again, Everyone should support Dolmenwood, it's got a Patreon and the creator deserves our attention.

Personal opinion: Helping with the sacrifice isn't murder hobo. Robbing the cultists/victim and leaving entirely is the essence of murder hobo.

The size of the books and their layouts alone make these books gold. I just found out that most of those books don't have a 5E version though :( This one seems to be the only one that has a 5E version. Too bad they don't do two version for all the books.

Great review! I hope they find some way to distribute it in the US at some point (maybe Lulu or something). I love little adventures like that, but $50 (after shipping) is way too much for something like that.

For those like me who are watching this only now, the sacrifice scene at the beginning has been replaced with something else (in the OSR version anyway, not sure about the 5e edition).

Fantastic review (as always)! From your video and the sample I've seen online, it appears like the 5e version provides some extra color and details. Did you find any advantage with the OSR version over the 5e version....other than brevity?
