so the thousands of us that loved Q1 in the 80s were all wrong then huh. sounds like a you problem lol. if your DM has to flip through books while in session to figure out what's going on....he sucks as a DM. being a DM is not easy and it takes 10 hours of prep to have a seamless 3-4 hours of play. thats part of the job of being a DM and creating reference materials for yourself has never been easier. in the 70s and 80s we had to use flashcards and notebooks, now you just bring your laptop and bang all your references and sequencing is right there. y'all want D and D for dummies that plays itself so you can larp as theater kids

As a long term hobbyist (30+ years) whose involvement in the hobby extends beyond the confines of the Boomer Game, I can safely say that the "GM Crisis" isn't restricted to DnD. _Every_ game has an extremely skewed "GM:Player" ratio and it's down to various factors, largely that players feel they need system mastery and great "storytelling skills" before they can sit down behind the screen. What's causing this? Well, sure, it's low hanging fruit at this point, but it's mostly the high production value APs like Critical Role, D20, etc. They've put unrealistic expectations of requirement on what it takes to sit behind the screen and run the game. Players expectations of what GMs should be doing have skyrocketed since 2016, to completely unreasonable standards that a lot of "professional" GMs would likely struggle to meet. Less than a decade ago, all a GM needed was a story and a little understanding of the rules, nowadays a GM is expected to be a Renaissance Man with expertise in a broad range of skills because the vast majority of players don't understand the difference between "Professional actors who create an entertainment show for profit" and "Person who just wants to roll dice and tell stories"

I just can no longer stand when players try to sound like the actors in LoTR and like spend the majority of their energy/creativity by just making up an accent on the spot.

Considering my Warlock's goal in my group is knowledge across the multiverse, he needs every lore dump he can get and a variety of different information and perspectives depending on who he chooses his patron to be. This alone makes it all worth it for Planar Travel because he wants to learn everything he can

The real core of ttRPGs (just RPGs originally)? What they really created with D&D, and from that on to Runequest, Traveller, Pathfinder and alike. It's the gamification of make believe. Gamification is the process of adding game elements to a non-game activity to increase engagement and enjoyment. Despite the fact we say "playing make believe", it's not actually a game in the sense that there are no rules. All of what make believe actually is, is the subject of a lot of scientific debate. We do know it's pure imagination and mutual story telling but there a lot of 'hows' and 'whys' we're still figuring out. And it doesn't take too many rounds of "I got you!", "No, I got your first", "I got you first" before a lot of kids are ready to pick up a book. Still, we miss it and ttRPGs let us get some of that back

I 100% agree with the idea of freedom of choice and the fact that it doesn't depend on the game but how it is run. I've played in games of both 5e and several OSRs where the GM wouldn't allow very simple out of the box reasoning a chance of success and it made me furious. I'm talking stuff like "can I prop the torch against the cliff face and use my shield? No, as soon as you drop it it goes out.". I don't blame those GMs. I've suffered from the same fear of "breaking the game" by allowing that freedom. But it is the most essential part of the game: you can do something that completely bypasses the written rules and succeed.

Great video - You touched on comparing these styles of play, which I appreciated, especially between the OC, story and trad styles, but classic vs. OSR as well. The article attempts two things: to pinpoint and to define different styles of play, and where the definitions might be inaccurate, I think the styles of play they are aiming for definitely exists. The definitions definitely require curating, but I think they are great starting points. I think the most the important takeaway (for me) is to be more purposeful in choosing what style of play to embrace every session/adventure/campaign. If a tip, advice or tool tries to maximize player agency, but your table wants a “trad” game, you’re looking in the wrong toolbox. Likewise, looking at it from the other side it is very good with some terminology to help set expectations and learn to play the game. All-in-all, thank you for presenting much needed information to me.

What a succinct explanation! I love the infinite possibilities discussion, as that is exactly why I love TTRPGs so much. Breaking free from the rigidity of most video games to something we at the table have a direct impact on is why my table plays the game. Couldn't agree more with the TUNIC explanation! Finding that launch point is incredibly important to set your players off running... sometimes literally!

Nice review video! I used my 3rd edition book so much, I have muscle memory and can find each section! I still got the 4th edition (physical) book. Also, the digital version being free is a nice feature. Transfer the text to Obsidian or google drive and customize, change the order etc. I spent a year experimenting with some dnd 5e and Pathfinder 2e rules and I’ve decided come back to the basics.

D&D doesn't NEED to be 'saved' 50+ years of product created, 6 or more editions, numerous emulations. Getting rid of D&D would be an impressive task. I'd rather try something easier, like getting rid of the Bible. Then there is the fact the hobby has more competing not at all D&D designs out there than I can count. Had not heard of the Elon Musk thing. I can't even think of a response. I suppose if I was as rich, I might do something weird like that. Maybe buy Tamiya.

The easy solution for needing multiple light source timers would be to ask each player who is holding one to start a one-hour-long timer on their phone's clock app.

The irritating thing about cyberpunk is that it gets harder and harder to view as a dark future rather than a slightly worse version of the present as time goes on.

Love the lucidity of your thoughts on the subject. Man, that one phrase of yours was spot on and you don’t even need “dnd” as the subject. It’s just sound wisdom for the times“If you want ____ to be better then make ____ better. Don’t put your hopes on a billionaire or a corporation to save ____ for you.” Great 5 minute blurb sir , subscribed , gonna buy your game now , and play it. thanks.

I have a strong preference for some systems, not because they are always ideal, but because they are familiar enough and I know them enough to bend and shove them into the shape I want for my campaign without breaking them. I have a player that like to haggle over a lot of rules. If I'm super familiar with how and why the rules work - I can wiggle them a bit to make people happy and know I haven't wrecked everything by accident.

OSR exists because people cared. Pathfinder exists because people cared. The storms of rants and youtube videos devoted to DnD is because people care, and they want it to stay how they wish it was. Even Critical Role moving away from DnD could hurt them more than DnD. People always devolve to heading back to DnD. Its an IP and system people want.

I would thoroughly enjoy more setting based in other cultural/religious background but more fictionalized so I don't have to play in an alternative Earth. Having said this I dig this book and I'm happy Yochai Gal is celebrating his heritage.

I think role-playing is very important, even foundational, to role-playing games. TUNIC, as you put it, is very important, but I disagree with the statement that you can take out role-playing and still have essentially the same game, but that you can not take out TUNIC and essentially have the same game. Take away role-playing from DnD and you basically have Descent: Legends of the Dark. A fun tabletop game for sure, but not a role-playing game. Take away TUNIC and you still have a role-playing game, a shitty railroaded session yes, but still a role-playing game.

I dislike the "boardgame"-ification of many modern tabletop RPG's. I'm probably the odd one out though since I can't even stand using miniatures, it cheapens the experience for me. I want it all to be in my minds eye, at most I can tolerate a hastily sketched map so you can gauge the general layout of a place. It's for these reasons that I have a very difficult time feeling 'immersed' when playing DnD, which has happened a few times, since that game practically requires a grid-map and some sort of player/monster board-game-piece. For these reasons I much prefer WoD to most other systems, since it's so focused on roleplaying and storytelling (but still has extensive and detailed rules, which I also think is important).

you say that roleplay isn't unique to ttRPGs and thus ttRPGs aren't about roleplay, but TUNIC is also obviously not unique to ttRPGs either, after all Sid Meier said that game design is about creating interesting choices, and choices need not be narrative to be impactful
