Winter Sessions Part 6: Bottom Bouncing for Steelhead

John and Goldie fish for steelhead in the Niagara whirlpool one again. This time, adapting to the winter cold and changing tactics triggers those weary rainbow trout to bite.

nice vids bro i love fishing the big river!! ...tip try to use a corky beside your bait especially with a minnow imitation ... i just put floaties in my roe bags so i dont need the corky with roe ... but a flashy corky at the head will bring your minnow out of the rocks but still be in the strike zone!!....good stuff keep up the great vids man

What do the bites feel like? I feel my bounce but sometimes I have tugs and I think I’m getting stuck in rocks but other time I have huge pulls and actual hits and it’s been weird trying to know what’s actually a bite and I keep ripping my bag out of fishes mouths

It will always vary. It just takes time to get a feel for it. Bites are usually a sharper bump than rocks.

Get yourself a good sensitive graphite rod, and use a braided mainline. Everything with feel a lot clearer and will help you get a feel for it. Also how do you know you are ripping bags out of fish mouths? That’s not likely unless you aren’t setting up your baits quite right. Ie wrong sized hooks, Corkies sitting right in the hook, dull hooks etc. If you’re late on the hook set then they are spitting it
