I've been watching your channel since you were at your other house and 99% of your videos were easily under ten minutes. It is so interesting when you apologize for "long" videos. Even though your videos have slowly gotten longer you are getting zero complaints from your faithful followers! We all just keep eating them up! It doesn't matter if they are 45 minutes or longer. I’ve grown plants using jugs for years. I bet much of your jug’s poor performance was from your direct watering, or inconsistent watering. I use a large plastic sweater box and simply set the jugs in a few inches of water for a few minutes, watering from below. Works a treat and I get much better success.

I did something similar, I had a plastic bin catching rainwater and I’d just sit them in there if I noticed them drying. Since I’ve set them all in a cold frame and they’re still maintaining moisture. Hopefully. Haven’t checked in a couple days lol

This was my first year trying WS, I sat mine in large containers to soak cup from below too and it worked pretty good for me. I will do it again as I do not have space inside or grow lights.

Another tip: I grow literally thousands of seedlings in the amazing Gardener’s Supply seed starter trays Laura highlighted. This year, it’ll be about 2,300 plants. The 24 cell trays, with water reservoir, wicking mat and humidity domes, are brilliant. I have quite a few of Gardener’s Supply three tier grow light set ups, and they’re amazing, as well. I grow several rotations of seeds in these. But I use the jug method to practically double my plant production. They’re great for any seeds -hardy annual, the odd vegetable that requires some cold, like artichokes, or perennials- that require a period of vernalization, or winter cold, to germinate. In the jugs, I sow quite thickly and set a group of eight jugs without their plastic caps in a cheap plastic under-the-bed sweater box; I bought ten of these boxes on sale at Bed, Bath & Beyond for just a few dollars and I drill about ten small holes in each one. Not only does this make them easy to move around, but on the rare occasion when I do need to water the soil in the jugs, I just fill the sweater boxes up with water. The jugs soak up what they need and the excess drains slowly out of the sweater box’s holes so nothing is sitting in water for more than a few minutes. In my zone 6 area, I only need to water them once or twice a winter. Once the air temp hits 60 degrees, I open the jugs during the day, closing them at night. When I’m ready to pot up, I cut the jugs’ sides and simply slide out the thick mass of soil and seedlings out of the jugs like a pan of brownies, slice it up with an old bread knife, and repot the tiny “brownies”. I sow about 50 jugs each December/January and thus am able to almost double my plant production beyond what my five 3-tiered grow light racks, each holding 15 trays and replanted twice, can handle. It’s a brilliant tool and some plants actually do better in the jugs than in a perfectly controlled grow light set up! Do try it, it’s such an inexpensive way to grow a ton of fresh plants!

I am a greenhouse consultant and I have to say it's amazing when I run into people in the greenhouse that are new gardeners and they tell me the thousands that they've spent or the hundreds that they've spent and been unsuccessful and when I start sharing the basic things like, you can use any container to grow anything in and as far as the medium and all that everything doesn't have to be a fortune then they come back and tell me about their success and they are so happy and feel so accomplished. A lot of people are not like you are they want to sell them expensive things that they make money off of themselves. If somebody is a new Gardener it's just confusing to them. If you start them out with the basics like you are on these and explain things and show them , it's not so overwhelming and they can learn on their own as they go along and get experience by doing. ✌️🌱

Laura, FYI, when you mentioned mealy bugs on the artichoke plants my first question that came to my mind was if they where in close proximity to succulents. Well, when you were giving the tour, my questioned was answered because I noticed they are right next to the bowl with all those succulents. Many years ago, I read in a very old gardeners almanac, that mealy bugs are attracted by succulents. However, the darn critters don't end up on the succulents, but rather on other plants around them. Needless to say, I had first hand experience with these bugs a couple years back. I had the most beautiful collection of moth orchids. One day, I purchased a couple of succulents, forgetting what I had read in the almanac, I placed those darn succulents next to my beloved orchids--within weeks I had an infestation of mealy bugs on my orchids!! I was so mad I couldn't throw those succulents in the trash fast enough!! I managed to save a few of my orchids. Needless to say, after that incident, I have never again had a mealy problem...knock on wood! I have to say that I stay away from succulents now! Sorry for such a lengthy FYI.

No thats a very good FYI. I love the look of succulents but can never get myself to buy them i live in a desert environment. But with my garden i had a horrible experience with caterpillar and white flys and inside with Fingal gnats. Reading this makes me reconsider my want for a succulent for sure.

I sit and take some notes while listening. I love the way to have the photos of the plants! If I'm looking for certain colors it really helps me because I have very little knowledge of most plants. I stick to daisies, hosta, and a few others. I look for flowers and they are gone with no restock in sight! 😢You have given me the courage to go beyond them and love my garden and yard. Sarah S. I thought mine were a little leggy last year so this year I increased the length of time my grow lights from 12 to 14 hours and I got a fan going. My fan is hooked up to the timer for my grow lights. I wonder if leggy plants happen more easily with certain plants? Good luck.

I heard that if the lights are about 2” above the plant it will not be leggy. Try moving the lights closer to the plant by propping it up perhaps

I was so glad to see that you were growing the Nicotinia Peace Pipe (or Woodland Tobacco). This is one I said you needed for your Moon Garden. They are majastic! Super Tall w/ really long tubular white flowers. Warning though, the leaves do smell like tobacco & can be sticky when handled. So when you go to pull them up in the Fall make sure to wear gloves. I always let mine go to see before I discard for the year. They drop so many seeds that you will have dozens of new plants volunteer for you next Spring. As w/ my Foxgloves, if the volunteers don't come up where I want (like the front of the border instead of the back, I always dig them up & move them. They handle it really well). Also, if you dead head the flower stocks before the seed head pops, you can lay them out on news paper until they do & collect all of the hundreds of seeds you will get off just that one stock!

If you have another dry winter, put the jugs in a large baking type pan of some sort and fill that with water so the seeds/plants can get watered from below.

You were saying how you found stinging nettle in one of your bottles and hay racks, I’m sure you know this but I have found over the years if I purchase bulk wood mulch from a landscaping co. Eventually I end up with so many different weed but mainly any weed that produces those little whisker seeds ( they look like the seed from milkweed) they blow through the air and get caught on the wood mulch from the landscaping nursery and also the mulch I’ve put down🥴🥴🥴). It’s pretty pricey to purchase bagged mulch but I have noticed it lasts longer without weeds then the bulk. IMPO🥰🥰❤️❤️love you, you and Aaron have given so much info to even the experienced gardeners👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️

I love this comment so much I had to show it to my husband, I’ve been telling him for years “when we lived in our old house we never had a problem with the nettle seed because we used bags of mulch” so since we moved to our new house and started using bulk mulch from the landscaping companies every year I’m digging these little buggers out!!! I want a green house, always have. I have a mini greenhouse that I started Baptisia Alba from stem cuttings. Those majestic plants come back every year and are beautiful! I love starting plants. I grew Yucca from seed, and even hosta from seed. It's so cool!

@@rebeccaschulz2212 I watched Big Dreams, Small Spaces on Netflix a long time ago and I don't think it's on there anymore, but that involved amateur gardeners also. Monty Don was the host so I've just looked up any show that he is involved with. There's a 10 hour video of the Great British Garden Revival series. I've only watched 2 episodes, but it has lots of info. There's also Garden Rescue that isn't great for tips, but good to get an idea of garden design.

I used the large rectangular clear salad containers for my winter sowing, they worked great. Just needed to add holes in the top and bottom and soak off any label. Also, do you ever pinch off the flowers on your tomato and pepper plants until you put them outside? I read it helps the plant out energy into a strong root system. I tried last year and my plants were really healthy. Once they’re outside you can stop. I also planted a lot of straw flowers this year too!!

I have a few reasons why I love your channel. One of them is seeing our "weeds" or "boring plants" being started from seed or planted in prime garden spaces. Coleus here is grown for medicinal properties, love in a puff and gomphrena are THUGS. We pick lantana flowers along the side walk and throw them like we're flower girls. Caladiums are everywhere in my grandmas yard amd along side walks too. And we eat a lot of sweet potato vine. I just love learning from you and passing it on to my grandma. So i guess uhmn THANK YOU!!!

PLEASE use Potting Mix next time! HUGE difference with watering!! I never had to water my containers except for the 1st few I started from your 1st video as I used starter seed mix. They were the only containers I had to water constantly. I planted 80 containers. Only 5 didn't sprout. I'll be doing this every year! Thank You both for all the inspiration! This is my second year using the winter sowing method and I recommend using a paint marker rather than a sharpie to label the jugs. I bought my paint marker at Wal-Mart and it lasts all season with no fading.

That didn't work for me. I got a sharpie brand and a generic brand from Michaels and both faded. I'm thinking a label of some sort inside the jug is the way to go. Maybe a popsicle stick?

Hi Laura, I don't mind the long video at all. I really do like them - your content is great! With your Canna seeds, they germinate quicker with scarification. I use a thick coarse emeryboard. I rub an area until I see just a bit of white and sometime I also soak the scraped seeds. Yours may still germinate - it just takes a lot longer.

Love the longer videos, Laura. Start to finish on a project makes things clearer to me. When I want info I want it now, hate waiting. Nights are still pretty cool in Minnesota so haven't done much yet but my bloomerang and limelights are leaving out, boomerangs are coming along very fast and will be moving one of them to the alley fence to screen it a bit more. That will give me a nice screen of lilac, hydrangea and rhododendron. Will be moving and splitting my yellow peony into 4 plants also since it's way to crowded where it is. Will keep 2 and give away 2. My yard seems to be ideal for peonies as was my parents yard just down the block.

I have found that other channels have so many mean, stupid comments that it just makes me mad and I feel bad for the person who worked so hard to do a video that was ment to help people. So, I just don’t read comments anymore. During this video you stated that you read all the comments! So, I starting reading and found not one negative comment. Wow!! What a nice surprise. :) Thank you to everyone for all the helpful information, kind words and love. A rarity on KZbin. Love this channel and the people in the Garden Answer community! Winter sowing is fun. They look wetter than mine did in previous years, but i rarely watered. Very nice overall yours are. Next year keep a eye @ avoiding big pot shadows etc. Sweet the indoors plant starts also! Edit addon. Long vid worked well! Heh took you with me, ya kept me company while morning todo's. Be well.

Poppies need light to germinate (no soil cover) so maybe that's why they didn't do too well. I love poppies!!! And love your videos ..

Laura, thank you for feeding my obsession! I must know, what is the brand of your wee little shovel? I teach a special Ed vocational program, and we have a fairly large greenhouse. The chubby handle would be great for some of my kiddos (and everyone else actually)! I am dying to head East and check out your parents’ garden center. Are these little diggers available there? Your videos are so fun. I love your energy and pace. I usually can’t sit still long enough to watch something an hour long, but I can watch 2 or 3 of your videos in a row. I keep having to back up to catch plant names as I am keeping lists of the ones I like best so I can see how they would fare in the Willamette Valley.

Laura, you don’t ever need to apologize for a long video, I did my walking routine while watching and was happy to multitask. Here in Michigan, my wintersown seeds are still growing. No need to water as we’ve had plenty of snow and rain. Our last frost date is end of May, so I need to wait awhile to see real progress. Thanks for all your tips.

Thank you so much for doing this video! It definitely isn’t “too long”, because it was so informative and interesting seeing all of your seeds turn into plants. I’ve had ups and downs with seeds this year, as always. Unpredictable weather and a warm winter really messed with a lot of mine, but the successes have been great. I’m like you, I just feel so proud of myself when I’m able to transplant that little plant that I started from seed! Can’t wait to see the cut flower garden and all of this in its splendor! I sow lobelia this way every January,only difference is I put lids with holes on my bottles ,this year ,after your video,decided to sow more flowers, I am very excited 🙂 Greetings from UK 🙂❤👍

Try an an "oil based paint marker" for your tags (outside and inside) this will hold up much better! I didn't get around to the winter sowing this year but plan to next year. Laura your video's are never too long...thanks for all you and Aaron do to inspire. I met you both in Charlotte NC, you both are so nice.
