Burleywhag bothy (located in the southern uplands of Scotland) is a remote mountain cabin hidden in the Scottish wilderness. Join me for an adventure as I hike to this cabin and enjoy a cozy night by the fire in freezing conditions. Hope you enjoy

Liked the Tardis blue paint on the door. Looked very cold. The woodburner can belt out a good heat once it gets going. Have to wean you off the pot noodles 😂. Try a cheap tin of beans & sausages from Aldi. But be careful using the jetboil to heat it.

Hi pal i like your video of your walk & stay at Burleywhag Bothy 👍 Burleywhag Bothy is one of my favourite bothies i am very lucky that it is one of my local bothies in southern scotland, It was great being back & staying at Burleywhag last june with my wee dog MacTavish & making memories we got the bothy too ourselves as well, we also stayed at & got Tunskeen Bothy, Kettleton Byre Bothy & White Laggan Bothy too ourselves as well & we visited Backhill O Bush Bothy & visited Chalk Memorial Bothy but Burleywhag Bothy was my hardest walk with having too push our wheelbarrow with our wood & coal & supplies in it for just over 5 hours but it was worth the extra effort, i left lots of wood & about 8 kilo of coal for future visitors. That was my wee dog MacTavish's last ever visit to Burleywhag Bothy as he is 14 now 14 year of going bothying with man's best pal ❤️ I have been going too the bothies for more than half my life i am now 51, It was great too see you enjoying your cup of tea relaxing on my chairs that i carried in too the bothy 10 years ago. MacTavish won't get too 15 & i will be forever heartbroken but i have thousands of memories of going bothying/walking with him over the years & that makes me happy 💙 Aw The Best Pal fae Me & MacTavish 🐾🐾

Thanks mate, it’s a great bothy. Thanks for helping with the upkeep. Really appreciate all the effort you go into to allow other people to enjoy the bothies. Sorry to hear about your dog not being very well. Hope you have a great 2024 and enjoy all the time you have with man’s best friend

Hi there mate. Another absolutely brilliant video, what a cracking little bothy that is. Looked a very scenic hike in too. Thanks as always for sharing your adventure. We even had decent weather in the Lake District at the weekend so I managed to get out eventually after all the rubbish weather we have been having lately. All the best, Dave

Not have to guess the icy temperature, with the atmospheric imagery of your head torch-light catching the wreathing vapours rising from the mug of hot tea and mingling with your own breath.😊 That said, it looked like a well sorted bothy, wood panelling all round to help keep the cold out, and there must be a story to tell from those pictures on the wall --. I'm sure we're a bit envious of you getting the place to yourself, especially one with log fire to cheer the evening. A fine start to your new year!

Lapse rate does not work in the weather you were experiencing, cold air is less buoyant and sticks around in the glens, unable to rise. In settled winter weather the low ground is often much colder. However Burleywhag is still in a hollow and does get very cold. Worst weather to be there is mild damp with southwesterlies. The site can be fog bound for ages and the fog gets into the building causing damp problems. Shepherds still use the house at lambing and when gathering sheep. It is not farmed from Mitchelslacks, the farm on the usual walk in, but a neighbour. I used to look after this place, for about 10 years. We had a green door. There was an upstairs and the sleeping area a corridor where the sheepdogs slept. Another room stored the shepherds equipment. Getting water was no problem for us, just pulled it out of the burn. The house became empty when the now ruined New Burleywhag on the walk in was built. The farmer from Mitchelslacks would get his whisky water from a spring after a short climb on the walk in. I remember telling me how he got badly lost once - on his own farm at night in the fog that the area attracts - it's not remote or wild but.....

Ah fair, I’d just taken that advice on the weather from other people to be fair so wasn’t 100% sure. Thanks for the comment mate

Lovely little video again, thank you. I have holidayed in Dumfries and Galloway a few times recently, love the area, it was nice to see this bothy not too far away from the area, hoping to visit in the future. Can I ask where did you walk from? Thank you again.

Started the walk from mitchellstacks farm, there’s a spot to park for about 3 or 4 cars just off the side of the road. There’s a sign for the burleywhag bothy walk at the parking spot so was easy enough to find

Hey, Happy New Year! I'm loving those green folds in those hills - very different from what lies further north. Yes, you're lucky to have the bothy to yourself again - from what I can gather, the drinking and singing can go well into the night, when there's a good company, but maybe that isn't your cup of tea. Thanks for sharing it all with us though! Paul.

Another great adventure, thank you. That steep view down into the valley to your left was just stunning. I could feel the quiet all around you, as you headed over those hills. I always think how nice it must be to be in the middle of nowhere, and not ever have to think about large predators, especially black bear. I'm glad you stayed cozy with the fire, it would have been a long night otherwise. Looked like a lot of fun.

Thanks Erin. Yeh we’re really lucky in this country not having to worry about bears. The most we have to worry about is an angry sheep haha

Belligerent sheep can be a problem, but watch out for goats, the mountain variety especially. If they sense a tasty snack in your rucksac, they won't take no for an answer, and if they can't get the snack, your rucksac will do just fine!!!😂

Very enjoyable journey, and a very comfortable Bothy. I'm not sure you realise how amazing your videos are, showing us life in the real Scotland, where most seems to concentrate on the Cities. Did you sleep OK in the cold? Did you see any animals? Look forward to some more, and thank you, plus Happy New Year too 😊
