@@truthseeker3909 In the mid-19th century, French wine was an international phenomenon and big business, accounting for more than 15% of France’s federal tax revenue. But in 1865, a root louse called phylloxera began wiping out the country’s vineyards. Desperate for a solution, the French reached out to American botanists, including Munson, who was known for his pioneering documentation of native grapevines in Texas and the Southwest. Munson found and sent specific disease-resistant grapevine cuttings to France, where farmers grafted their grapevines to the Texas roots-literally binding the two together-and crossed them with local plants. The tactics stemmed the tide of phylloxera and saved a range of delicate French grape varieties, including cabernet, merlot, pinot noir, and chardonnay. Even now, 135 years later, France grows wine grapes rooted on the descendants of Texas native plants. They know more about Munson in Europe then do we Americans. Thanks for sharing.

I haven’t eaten anything yet, though all I could find in my house was some bread slices, some canned tuna and a cup of ramen noodles. My boss just called to tell me, the office will stay closed until next Monday or Tuesday. Everything else is the same but colder dude. You know, the ice that freezes on your car windshield and windows, legitimately that thick, but it’s now on the inside of my windows. I’m scared for my family, because they all have medical issues and one of them uses machines that helps him breathing.

If any of you have access to some of these things you will be able to keep your warm home : bricks or River Rocks , BBQ or open fire . I did this years ago and it really worked : I set some cinder blocks on their side on the floors of the rooms to be heated went outside to the barbecue and literally cooked some bricks on the flame and turned them over , maybe a total of 3 minutes ... bought them in and set one brick on each cylinder block ... they gave off a lot of heat ... and when they weren't as hot went back out and did it again . I closed the doors on any areas I wasn't using ... and right before going to sleep went outside and reheated the bricks again . When I woke up in the morning it was still warm in my home

It's just 10% that has left a few million without power with rolling blackouts. But it will be fixed. In the near future once this storm passes they will cover the powerplants that had outages as a start. Then move on to cover the rest. Texas here, except for some vehicles equipped with winter tires, roads are not a good idea to drive on...partly because of the un-treated roads and partly because of drivers just being unprepared. Though I think the worst part is the energy shutdowns, I'm sure Finland and the rest of the Nordic countries have their power grids prepared for a large surge in case of a blizzard or some sort of winter 'disaster'. That being said we do see snow and sleet, just not often. The last time I can remember it being this bad was back in 2014 or 15 as far as roads go, though power has never been this scarce as far as I can recall. Just to give some insight into a (Dallas/Fort Worth area)Texan's point of view who's still lucky enough to have electricity. I wish we were as prepared as Finland, but this storm is breaking all sorts of records(not in a good way) :p.

@@themetricsystem7967 Not to disagree, but I totally understand how insulation would be much better than homes down in Texas, though being part of what's known as 'tornado alley'; most of our homes are particularly sturdy in the case of a tornado or high winds due to the flat landscape North Texas in particular provides. @Rozeswoesh lol, I am by no means an electrical engineer, I can't speak for others that live in Texas and know more about the subject than I do but it seems that ERCOT didn't handle this situation as they should have even with conditions being as intense and fast-paced as they were over the last few days. I do know that California, New York, Alberta(Canada), and other parts of the US have their own Independent System Operators...As far as I know they haven't failed us enough for us to notice up until this winter storm. Not sure what to make of it until there's more information available, so far it just seems like a total lack of communication and foresight by them.

Just for perspective, the average low temperatures for most of the state in the dead of winter is 10 C, they’re currently facing -12 C temperatures. Most of the homes have minimal insulation, and are designed for coping with the summer heat around 43 C. Because of this, very few homes have fireplaces/wood-burning stoves, so they can’t simply make a fire. Also, many of the new homes heating units require electricity to operate. So even if they have natural gas flowing to their homes, their heaters/furnaces won’t work. As a result, most are dealing with -12 C temperatures in their homes. Quite a few people will die from this, as crazy as that would sound.

I'm glad you're in a warmer place ... but while there I want you to look for some items that could help you if the power goes out at your grandma's . If she has a garage please look around to see if there's any bricks , cinder blocks or things like River Rocks and large stones . If she has a barbecue or a fire pit you will be able to keep some of the rooms there very warm . Set cinder blocks on their side on the floor of the areas you want to heat . Take bricks and cook on open flame of barbecue or fire ... maybe 3 minutes each one and make sure you also turn them over ... then carefully bring in the house and set on the cinder block. You will notice how quickly the rooms start to warm up... you will have to reheat them every now and then but being out in the cold is worth for how warm it will make the house . And reheat them one last time before you go to bed ... also make sure you close doors on the rooms you're not using . I think this might also work with River Rocks and large stones and landscaping stones .

The best is they are trying to spin the power outages as the radical lefts fault. There is a Forbes article where the guy says this is the problem with the left wanting to make everything electric and how the outages prove we need to burn fossil fuels. The idiot doesn’t even realize that if the power was coming from a coal fire power plant, it’s the infrastructure and transistors/transformers that are causing the outages. They didn’t have a power infrastructure built for severe cold weather and blizzard conditions. But in an attempt to pass the blame they are blaming solar and wind energy, the true Republican way. Lie, deflect and attack. Can’t fix stupid, let them secede, global warming will destroy them. Cat 5 hurricanes in the summer and Blizzards in the winter, mother nature’s “shocker” (2 in the pink, one in the stink).

Watching cold, snow, sleet and ice weather move South in the USA. Poor folks are NOT used to this and it can be numbing. Here are a few tips from an Idaho/Montana gal. Add some if you feel, but share for certain because eventually someone will see this who needs to: 1. Layer up. Leggings, pants, skirts (more skirts = more insulation); Loose is better than tight. 2. Create a 'warm area' in your home and close off all other rooms. Keep space heaters pointing under sinks in bath and kitchen. 3. Keep shovel (snow or otherwise) in the house so you can shovel OUT. You can accomplish a lot outside if you do it in short spurts and seek warm room inside til warm enough to tackle again. 4. Make HUGE pot of warm soup/stew/pot o' beans, whatever - but you will do well to have warm food instantly available. 5. Don't leave the house and drive. Just don't. Make your neighbors your concern for a few days during the emergency cold. 6. You can pitch a tent in your living room and make it fun - and the tent will be warmer will all the bodies and pet bodies in there. If the power goes out, you'll still survive. 7. If you go outside in footwear that is not grippy, take and Wrap cord or twine or thin rope around so it will catch in the ice and snow. Still, walk like a penguin.

As a person from Texas and lived through this. Trust me we do NOT get snow. In my 30 years I’ve seen snow 3 times. Those times it lasted a few hours and melted by noon. This was days of no power no water for us my toddlers were freezing, we had piles of blankets. We had so many layers on. It was horrible. Our homes especially the older homes are NOT insulated well. Having a fire place is a rarity. We do not have clothing for this weather as we usually don’t experience much cold. We can survive 100+ weather easy, but this? No. And for those saying ugly stuff, come talk to me in mid July while wearing your snow gear and I’ll serve you a glass of ice tea. Let me see you survive the heat. Our senators were not prepared for this people froze to death, kids died, people were desperate this is no laughing matter. We need better management for sure.

I’m aware residents aren’t used to such weather conditions, but it never crossed my mind that the way in which homes are built down there (exterior wall metal pipes) and power grids are also playing a factor in riding out storms like this.
