Watching from Finland! We in southern Finland have really wet winters living on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Freeze, snow, thaw, rain and freeze again. Your video speaks really well to us. Thanks.

North Central PA. Same here cold one day warm the next. I prefer the thinsulate insulated rubber boots, but as with all rubber boots, they have their downside. What type of boot I wear depends on my plans for the day, lots of choices.

Looking like some fun times in Georgia. I've always been lucky with fire. I've never had an incident where I couldn't get one going. Although I smoke, so I always have a lighter on me. I have one of those rubber lighter protective cases. But I'm a fan of the lighter leash. And for the serious smokers out there like myself, I have a cheap peanut lighter on my keys. I appreciate your video.

Tie off the end of your buff and fill it with snow it will filter the debris and the dark cloth will absorb more heat melting the snow faster. I use a gear bag I made from the shin part of a pair of cut off jeans. I sew the top at an angle then add a piece of cotton tape or webbing to tie the bag closed and use it to hang by the fire. You can tie up snow in a handkerchief too.

Great content. For me, a fire is not always possible. Clothing is essential, and you covered that well. Proper shoes or boots can be equally important. The reason constant movement such as walking, hiking, can be used to main core temperature in freezing conditions. Improper footwear can reveal or can create issues in the feet that can easily surprise you, especially if you are on the move. If you lose the ability to be mobile, of course, survival becomes more of a challenge. Another thing to think about is to have some high calorie food (energy bars, or equivalent) because of the energy that is required to maintain movement. It is easy to throw a couple of bars in your pocket, or pack. It maybe nessisary to move at night to stay warm and sleep during the day when it is warmer. Night travel has its own challenges, but one very serious one is eye protection. It is easy to walk into a dead branch even in day time, night time is even problematic. Having a basic set of clear no tint glasses is really not only smart but really nessisary. Just my two cents. Thanks for sharing.

That branch bridge at 4:44 was a great trick. I have read about the snowball trick in a survival book from Alaska but I have not tried it because I live in middle GA. I had enough snow while stationed in Alaska. How would you suggest someone practice winter skills without the snow? I have a few ideas but I would like to know your thoughts. And smashing a snowman is way more fun. Thank you kind sir.

It is difficult to practice winter skills in a place that doesn’t have much of a winter. Road trip??

Always remember when using the snowball stick method, just like marshmallows rotate for even heat distribution or one side will burn and the other will still be raw. !!!!

Every day, every where the true spec pants I wear have a little pocket perfect fit for the Bic with a fire sleeve and on the other side, I carry a small CR 123 USB rechargeable battery flashlight Also I used some of that para cord that has the tinder inside it to attach the lid of the fire sleeve to the body so that it flops off in one piece and I don’t have to worry about losing it or holding onto it, just tied a knot in the appropriate place on the fire cord to hold it in place when it’s loose plus I have that I did tinder if needed in an emergency.
