Nice job, Jason! Another approach worth considering is to utilise a modularity of sorts to simplify and accommodate your gear for a wide range of needs. A generous hip (lumbar) bag (7L) for smaller heavier gear and supplies, plus a separate kit bag on that belt for IFAK, PPE, etc. Over that, a 25-45L backpack with gear appropriate for the season and mission-appropriate duration and activities. Savotta is supposed to be coming out with the hip bag soon -- and believe me, once you've cut your backpack weight in half, you'll wonder why didn't I do this sooner? Plus, the implementation of modularity at this level makes it harder to forget something important, or carry unnecessary duplicates.

For everything that's farther away than a 15 minute stroll from my home, I always pack and dress like I could spend the rest of the day outside, year-round. I always pack snacks and water for every passenger and make sure everyone wears appropriate clothing. Rain gear is a must because it's a great insulation layer against wind and rain and if you wear a thick hoodie, fleece jacket or plaid shirt underneath, it can work as a makeshift winter coat. Something like a buff/neck gaiter is very easy to carry in a cargo pocket and can protect large parts of the head and neck area from the elements (sun, cold, rain/snow). I'd go with merino wool from spring through fall and thicker fleece for winter.👍🏻

I have a similar backpack like yours as a ''long-term'' travel pack... I added a mole system panel on it [the kind they sell for the back of your car seat...] it's been very helpful adding extra packs with what I need so I don't have to go through my actual pack all the time... other than that we pack just about the same. [ no ''dinos'' on my... but I use all kinds of edges...]

I feel like I'm doing something right because my winter load out is very similar! Have you considered some chemical hand warmers? I always keep a couple packs in my bag, and we seem to always use them. They are especially useful if I'm out with someone who didn't bring gloves (or the right gloves for the weather), I can just toss 'em a couple and instantly improve their mood.

What a great realistic kit ….. I also like that you actually use the gear, apart from the stuff you want to keep as a backup like the sawyer filter…..I always wonder why other people make such over the top or inadequate survival kits, when what you would go hiking camping with plus a couple of extras is the perfect set up……

The Marine corps improved bivy is lighter and can be packed tighter with mosquito net. The nature Valley hard granola bars are always in the truck they hold up to weather extremes. With the addition of a few lifeboat packs of water you can have food and water ready to use.

Suggest upgrading to the Baofeng UV-13 or 15 (USB chargeable). Also, pick up the $85 USB Folding Solar Panel at Harbor Freight. Make sure you keep a couple of >3amp mobile and wall chargers along with 2x the cables you need. Always carry a battery bank that can be recharged from any source, including solar. Might consider adding a commando wire saw as well as a ferrocerium rod and a sharp carbon steel for striking. Consider going usb rechargeable on all of your lighting and electronic gear. There's now no excuse to keep changing batteries out. Get a ham license so you can use that radio legally to talk to ham operators around the world (through repeaters & the internet). Like a Schmaug, there is no replacement for a good wool blanket. - I'll shut up now.

Looks good. The usgi bivy is my go-to as well if long term is the issue, worth the weight, it can be a shelter unto itself. However I really travel with less anymore., the SOL bivy. As far as leaving a firearm in the vehicle, I make sure to have a very heavy cable and lock and run it through the action. However, I'm very careful with when to have and how to secure, sometimes less is more. The handgun is extremely capable in the right hands, not to mention great to hunt small game. Really, any more, I have gotten to the point of carrying less. As long as I can maintain core temp, hydration, nutrition, medical, and some extra mags, I'm good. Comfort is relative to the situation, and being able to move quickly can be a great advantage. If I'm making camp for hunting, training, or lately, a lot of fishing, my gear is a different story. Comms, when hunting, we wear out our boafeng's. They have pro's and con's, but usually work. I depend heavily on the Garmin inreach explorer. You can message others in the field directly as they have their own address, as well as alway keep in touch with home base. It looks like you more than have it covered. My only question is, during freezing, how do you protect your water filter. This is a real concern in our area where single digits are common. Bottle insulation is really maditory if you want to drink in the morning. Great video, I am always learning. For instance, on another channel, you mentioned that you carry a buff. I have added this to my goto edc. It makes a lot of sense, really equal to or better than my cotton bandana. Can't give up the bandana yet, but we'll see. Great content. Thanks for sharing.

You didn't show your tools? Where is your knife? On your belt? Ok. What about other tools? Folding saw?
@matthewmchenry9331

It's all shelter with a few options for containers, cordage, and combustion. A neck knife in your 1st line EDC is sufficient, or a belt knife, but that's still 1st line gear. You can leave the saws and hammers in the garage while hiking.
@Markus_321go
@Markus_321go 6 ай бұрын
@@matthewmchenry9331 I understand your general idea. But instead of batoning or using a belt knife as a makeshift splitting tool, a reasonably sized folding saw might really come in handy for shelter building or the preparation of firewood. After a long and tiring cross-country day hike the risk of injury would be much lower. I've been a belt knife guy for the majority of my hiking career but carry a folding saw in my backpack for a couple of years now.👍🏻

@Markus_321go when is the last time anyone actually built a shelter or a full-blown bonfire outside of recording a video on their own property for the sole purpose of uploading to social media for likes? Slip a Silky pocketboy in one of the side pouches and tether it to the pack (because you are more likely to lose it than use it) if you are going to lose sleep over not being able to process firewood in a hypothetical scenario, but Jason clearly is packing more than enough shelter to sustain himself. He only needs the smallest of fires for cleaning water and heating meals, which also does not require processing firewood.
