I always remove the handle bar of the jack after lifting the car. That way, you wont trip over it. Would be bad to fall due to the handle bar and also (unintentionally) kicking the lift from under the car.

Just a little trick, put the bottom of the wheel in close to the hub, then you don’t have to try and slide it, and you can use your bar to lift the tyre and line up the holes, works on truck tyres too.

Hallo Cassie. Great video and good job. It's good to see You again. I've changed wheels in my wife's car and my car last saturday. This kind of car jack is very useful. Good to see you're keeping safe out there. While winter tyres are not a legal requirement here in the UK (personally, I think they should be) I always fit them. We don't always get snow in the south where I live; if we do (or if we get sleet), it often melts, turns to sludge and then re-freezes. The first time I used them, I couldn't believe the difference they made. I'd rather drive my front wheel drive car in winter with winter tyres, than a 4x4 without them.

Here in the US we don't have the summer and winter tire change. Laws. We usually use all weather tires. Some times folks may use straight snow tires depending on where they live. Where I am at in Southern Mississippi. We have rain, wind, and clear. Very rarely do we get snow here.

Yep, use never-seize on the lug bolts or nuts, not oil. But also you need to tighten the lugs with a torque wrench (never use an impact gun!) ... every vehicle has VERY specific tightening tension or torque. Under-tightening is obviously dangerous since the lugs can come loose and a wheel come off while driving ... over tightening is also dangerous and can strip the threads and again cause the tire to come off while driving. Get a "click" torque wrench and use that. From your friendly retired truck mechanic. 🙂

Your tires are asymmetric instead of directional or symmetric. Tread pattern is the same on all tires as long as they are mounted on wheels with the correct side facing out. Wagons rock also!

I keep a 3' (1 meter ish) breaker bar with a 3" (75mm ish) extension and 19 mm socket in all the cars for tire changing. I have a wife and 2 Daughters and I know they do not have the upper body strength to always loosen the lug nuts esp if somebody used an impact gun on them. I use Never seize on the lugs.

Winter tyres are optional in the U.K. as we do not often get a lot of snow now. Ice can be a problem though. Most main roads are treated with salt, sand or a mix. The main problems are caused by motorists not having experience of these weather conditions resulting in collisions and other mishaps. Do you replace your worn tyres with new ones or get them remoulded ? Nice demo and good advice. Stay safe.

I too would add my comments to others who have suggested using a torque wrench. If you overtighten the wheel bolts (especially with the breaker bar), the bolts can literally stretch, then they either break, or, because they are now a different thread pattern, can screw themselves off. Every car has different torque settings, and a good tyre shop has a huge book with every car's torque settings, so you can get it right.

Cassie, I had no idea VW was using wheel bolts which means I haven't paid much attention to that brand of car nor ever worked on them. North American vehicles have used the stud and lug nut setup for a long time as have the Japanese. However farm equipment is different as a lot of implement wheels are mounted just like your car and oh is that ever fun when the hub is up in the air and have to lift a larger heavy tire and try to get that first wheel bolt in !. That doesn't mean North America got it right either for many years when they got this crazy notion to install left hand threaded studs on the left side of a vehicle ( normal right hand thread on the right side of the same vehicle ) . They started doing that in the 1930's and took them until into the 1980's before all manufacturers quit with that crap and the oldest highway tractor I have has left hand studs on the left steer axle hub as an example of that era. A friend of mine had brought his classic dodge car to a tire shop a few years ago and the young buck changing the tires on it twisted off or mangled the first few wheel studs on the left side before an older mechanic realized what was going on, your every day shop just doesn't deal with things like that anymore. Anyway thought you might get a chuckle out of that.

I would suggest getting a torque wrench so you can properly tighten you wheel bolts.
@wssides
@wssides 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, your owner's manual will tell you the correct torque for your wheel bolts or nuts. The torque wrench also ensures that all five on each wheel are the same. On your alloy rims this is quite important. Most experts advise re-torquing after 100 km of driving (then they should be safe till you change again). Re-torquing is not as important with the steel rims. Some vehicles will warp brake rotors if torque is uneven. Some vehicles will break wheel studs if over-tightened. By the size of the bar I am quite sure you are over tightening your VW. Most VWs used to be 115 Newton Meters. I haven't done one for about 10 years.

And sockets fit for alloy wheels, a long 1/2" wrench instead of a cross, a brush for the bolts (never put anything on the threads, instead brush off the rust, because you will increase the torque without noticing it), scissor jack instead of hydraulic (can't leak). And torque specs can be googled.

Hi Cassie Love your videos. Keep up the good work. I know you’re still relatively young, but, to add to your “work smarter, not harder” philosophy, I’d invest in a cordless impact wrench. Taking off the wheel nuts or lug nuts will be a breeze. You may still have to use the wheel brace for the locking nut but that’s only one nut in five so 80% of your work can be done easily. Putting an anti-seize spray on the nuts and studs is a very good idea.

With the bolt head in the cup of the jack it self. And at the rear, some where where the rear axle is mounted. Why??? So I don't damage the paint on the car, and causing a rust spot.

When I was a student, I could not afford a new set of new summer tires for my 1987 Saab. So I had to remove all the studs from the old winter tires in spring. I still remember the exact amount of studs, 496, because my wrist was REALLY sore (tenosynovitis) for weeks. The former winter tires were HORRIBLE to drive. They had a tendency for hydroplaning even in low speeds, I had a few close calls because of this. NOT RECOMMNDED !

All Seasons and for many people winter tires are obsolete. All Weather tires are not just a bit better than All Season. They are vastly better in the snow and ice. "The dramatic increase in snow grip with the WR G4 compared to an average all-season tire is staggering." "Overall, I'm very impressed with the Nokian WR G4. For many drivers in the snowbelt, the WR G4 makes a ton of sense." "Add in the wet-weather performance and overall quiet, smooth ride and the Nokian all-weather tire ticks many boxes. " "I was slightly nervous about "downgrading" from a dedicated winter tire to an all-weather setup. After my first drive in proper winter conditions, I realized my concern was unwarranted. The Nokian WR G4 performed like a performance winter tire in 2-3 inches of snow. Acceleration, braking, and overall cornering grip was impressive." "[The WR G4] is first developed for winter conditions," said Petri Niemi, head of product and price management at Nokian Tyres. "That is our baseline and what we feel makes an all-weather tire. It is then further refined to improve dry and wet handling properties, to bring it up to an all-season standard.""Just remember that a dedicated winter tire is always the best pick for ultimate winter performance and the majority of traditional all-season tires perform poorly the snow and ice." I have Toyo Celsius and they are also fantastic. Those who have tried All Weather will never go back to the cost and hassle of all seasons and winter tires. You can decide if it's worth the cost and hassle of a dedicated winter tire. There are lots of actual reviews online. Search "Nokian WR G4 Tire: It’s All-Weather, Not All-Season" for one.

The truth is, all season tires are a lousy compromise. The pattern used in winter tires is designed for maximum traction on snow and ice, in speeds of 100 km/h or lower. Summer tires are designed for higher speeds, and the pattern is made to let water exit to both sides, to prevent hydroplaning. The rubber quality is also different: The Rubber in winter tires has a much better friction, even in cold temperatures, but it is very soft and wears out much faster in summer conditions. The rubber used in summer tires is more resistant to wear, but does not keep the traction when cold. The road temperature variation (summer to winter) in many parts of Sweden and Finland may be from 40°C to -40°C (115°F to -40°F). The warming climate has not made it any easier: The temperature in winter used to be below freezing point for long periods, This is relatively dry snow and not super slippery. but winter temperatures in 2000's have been near 0°C, changing countinuously between melting and freezing, making the roads super slippery.

@@paanikki Each tire has a speed rating. Cheap summer tires are no safer at high speeds than winter rated tires.

Hey I’ve got what might be a stupid question. In Minnesota USA, we have similar weather as Sweden. Back before the ‘80’s, we used to have ‘snow tires’ and ‘summer tires’. But after the introduction of radial tires, there really was no need to change tires, we just use the same ones all year. Usually we get about 70,000 miles on a set, about 5 years. I’m just wondering why Swedes change their tires? Why not just use the same tires year around? And, an FYI, studs are illegal in USA 🇺🇸 they damage the pavement. Wish we could use them 😏 And does your dog speak Swedish or English? 😂😂
