I'm recovering well! We discovered last week that my shunt was not draining properly, so I had cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) building up around my brain. For months, I've been in severe pain and having strange neurological symptoms--confusion, forgetting words, clumsiness, nerve pain in my hands and legs, extreme mood swings, extreme fatigue... It was scary. At first, the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. My symptoms were atypical for shunt failure. I should have had high fevers, nausea, visibly swollen ventricles on my CT scans, etc. but I didn't present with those. After many x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, and a test called a shunt tap, we finally realized my shunt had stopped draining. The surgery revealed that my shunt tubing had moved and was pressed up against a ventricle in my brain. Think of a straw that has stuck to the bottom of a glass and can't suck up a drink. That's essentially what was happening with my shunt and the excess CSF. After my surgery on Wednesday, all of the weird aches and pains, nerve pain, clumsiness, cognitive issues, etc. went away. I feel so much better!
