I am so sad we didn't get at least one normal fully done song with this mashine... I don't care if it's concert-ready or if it needed 50 takes to finish... I was watching the process for YEARS waiting for a song... and I am very sorry to see the machine go without a proper song.

@@Yvory6 oh man... it's a long story, that has been documented in over a hundred videos... but the short version is: The Marble Mashine X didn't end up meeting Martin's "standards", and he decided to ditch the whole project. It looked great, it sounded great, but it wasn't reliable enough to be taken on a stage, so Martin decided to end the project, and MAYBE build a 3rd mashine - but only once he solves all the issues that happened to this one. Also his dad got sick, he had to move out from the French home he bought... basically the MMX story didn't get a happy ending at all. It was a failure - one that taught us a lot of things, but a failure in the end - at least according to Martin. I still wish he'd just make a few songs for video on the MMX though. Like it was nearly finished, it did work good enough to be fine with some video editing. I think he was so disappointed in himself (and probably the father-health thing god too big) that he just gave up on it.

I’ve been rewatching the entire MMX progress series recently and I’m still just in the very early stages (like, before the programming wheel was even finished) and so seeing this brings a tear to my eye. I hadn’t watched this before. It’s all so incredibly real all of a sudden. Everything is so perfect and precise and it’s hard to really appreciate that until you see and hear it working. I actually have this problem to a noticeable degree, I played a really crappy trombone for three and a half-ish years and I freaking loved it. @@Yvory6 Marten abandoned the project in favor of starting a whole new machine from scratch, as much of the design of MMX was inherently flawed when it came to the ultimate goal of repeatable, tight live music with minimal errors (which could range from a missed note to onstage hazards to machine damage) due to it being designed first as a Visual piece of art as much as a functional one

Watching this in 2020 makes this feel just like software development. Get very far on a foundation, to then realize that to be scalable to fulfill the reqs you have to backtrack and rebuild parts that were "there", but is a hinderance for getting where you need. Obviously, not all of the music one hears in this video is being produced from that machine as there is nothing being struck by the falling balls to produce some of it. There are no "vibraphone" metal planks (that were there in the previous beta incarnation of this spectacular machine) being stuck to produce the some of the sounds that are part of this musical piece. In fact, the music starts before Martin begins to....."wind up the machine." Still, that machine is a one of a kind master work of mechanical engineering and I'm looking forward to seeing what can be produced with it once it's finally, and fully completed. This new machine certainly has the percussion aspects down pat that were only in an infancy stage with his first design. This is....AMAZING!

Also, the quality of video is lacking. I only realized this wasn't wintergatan after noticing the skips in motion near the end, and the aliasing in the pegs.

Totally not OK. even though it is cents per view, this guy is making money off of somebody else's content. Furthermore, Martin already has a KZbin channel. I get that credit was given, and props to that, but Martin isn't profiting off of his own content.

Wilson was the name of the volleyball that was Tom Hanks' only company in the movie where he's stranded on an island in the Pacific. If you look at Martin's flat wooden version of Wilson's face, it's based on the painted face that Hanks put on the volleyball. There's also a flat metal version of Wilson's face. I think "Wilson" in the current case is another KZbin channel run by Martin (even if he says that isn't so).

He has excess marbles running in a continuous loop in the divider track. He won't run out as long as there are no skips. This can be mitigated later by alternating both channels.
@MentalEdge

The conveyor belt lift also isn't running anywhere near capacity, as marbles are dropped more will constantly be lifted back up. Martin has done the math, he constantly mentions the rate at which marbles need to be lifted back up.
@TonyMurray
@TonyMurray 5 жыл бұрын
The total supply of marbles is lower than it could be, almost none are going through the recycler. Martin has definitely considered the rates of marble supply.

@Minecraft Platinum Fireworks Inc. Per beat iirc. Remember the machine spins faster or slower depending on tempo. But yeah its 8 per/something, as thats the amount per car on the lift. If it is per beat that means he can drop 8 marbles per beat. That's enough to drop one on a bass string, two on drums, four on the vibraphone and one offbeat, every beat.

Makes me genuinely frustrated whenever I think about it. Even if it wouldn't have been usable in concerts on his planned tour, he could have still uploaded a video of it playing music. His desire for perfection is destroying him and perhaps even his channel.
