As an engineering student I would love to make a device that automatically punches holes. I think one could make “a music maker box” a music box that punches holes instead of playing them, an arduino could control the hole punching, and an encoder could Tracy the rotation of a drive wheel. The goal being you export a MIDI to the device and it automatically prints out a perfect copy.

Perhaps print it on tyvec, cut join and punch it out. Assuming tyvec would be strong enough. You would have to fiddle somewhat to get the scale right.

You don’t need midi, also, most music boxes only play in c major (no flats or sharps- which most songs have) unless you customize the metal rods on the inside... just look up sheet music and copy the notes (remember the song has to have no sharps or flats... one thing that I have learned is if you play the same note twice instead moving to a sharp or a flat, that Could work, just doesn’t sound as good

I don't know how people can dislike this video. If people are not into it then why not go watch something else? WoW anyhow. I have always enjoyed machine and music, granted I have not been as fond of player pianos for whatever reason until more recently. My thoughts from long ago when asked to transcribe pop music to midi files, got me thinking of making a music box that uses solenoids. Obviously the trick is to find small ones and to be able to isolate or dampen the sound they make. I then thought xylophone! Well I have to admit that I am just a dreamer more than a doer and when I was turned on to Wintergaten I was immediately smitten by the realization of such electromechanical gems and nice compositions. Thank you for the inspiration to keep experimenting with music and the means to create it.

Using a xylophone contraption would also allow fast, repetitive notes on the same note (something currently impossible with a music box).

@@hikikomoriarty I appreciate the kind words! Thank you! My wife is an angel and I'm lucky to have her as a life partner, let alone a friend and soul mate! I'm blessed in that way, so it's literally the least I can do to treat her like the amazing human she is! As for the name, it is a stage name I use for many forms of art (I've onlyposted one of the beats I worked on so far, but I will post more music as I get it finished. I have some decent beats but...being a rapper at nearly 40 doesn't seem like a sound move for me to make. I might just try to sell the beats). The name is supposed to have a somewhat insidious, mysterious tone to it.... that's what I originally wanted but, interestingly enough, I couldn't think of a name that was true to my nature, my past, my interests and thay didn't sound like a 7th grader came up with it 😄 I decided to let fate choose for me and used the Wu Tang Clan Name Generator create a name for me 😄 That's how Childish Gambino (stage name for a rap artist...who does many other forms of art, that's just his music handle) was created. I figured I'd give it a try. I put in my name twice: my full name and the short hand version....and The Occultist Gilt and The Golden Mystic were the names that came up. Kind of odd that they are, in essence, the same basic thing. I loved the name, felt grateful to get one that cool and stuck with it. ...it suits me: I have tried many, many ways to connect with God or any celestial entity. I used to call myself a modern shaman when I was younger and in the middle of learning 😄 I mean, I'm perpetually learning....but, then, specifically about the occult. My wife and I even put our cats' names into it and it would come back with names like "Panther Spunky" for our all black, spaz of a cat. 😄 almost spooky how accurate it was! Sorry to ramble on 😄 I have a knack for making a short story long 😅 ..and no worries about my personal issues. Maybe, had I made a different bed.... it'd be more comfortable lying in it currently 😉😋 Things will work out....or they won't. either way, a new adventure awaits! take care and thanks again for the kind words!

I found a link to this when I was searching for custom-melody music boxes online and this sounds like SO much fun but would also challenge my follow-through skills quite a bit. The way you use MIDI is super useful and makes a lot of sense and I would really like to give this a go sometime--keeping your tricks for fixing punching wrong notes in mind, because I know I will make many fuck-ups ;) I found the fact that a music box doesn't play the note until the punch ends very interesting and I think I learned a little bit about the mechanics of music boxes through this. Thank you for enlightening us nostalgic folk who love the aching sounds of music boxes with a passion. I will absolutely be attempting this as a hobby and hopefully not failing miserably or getting frustrated beyond belief!

The sound is produced by metal tongues of different lengths for each note. Above each of these is a wheel with teeth, a bit like a gear. When the wheel is turned, the teeth pluck the metal tongue, producing the note. When the paper is fed through, the holes in the paper latch on to the teeth on the upper side of the wheel and turn the wheel slightly as the paper is pulled foward, making the teeth on the lower side of the wheel pluck the metal tongue. Hope that makes sense!

I know this is an old video, but it caught my eye because the tape looks just like a piece of lace patterning or a template for cross stitching. Thinking about it, it’s logical.....stitching is a series of points in a logical and mathematical progression, even tho we rarely think about it in those terms. Music is the same, except rather than a series of points in space they’re points on a vibrational scale. In any case it’s still magical to see a pattern for the eyes become a “pattern for the ears” or a tune, in such a direct way.

I had an idea, something that shouldn't be too hard for you to implement. Let's say you wanted to vary the tempo automatically. You could put buttons on the box so that someone could adjust the tempo, but there's a better way. If you have an LED and an optical sensor, you could teach an arduino to tell when there's paper between the two. (There's probably a mechano-electrical way to do this that works better, just FYI.) Then, you could punch holes in the margins of the paper, and use that sensor to detect certain patterns in the holes that you punch. you could easily have three speeds by just using two hole positions. 0_ could mean slow, 00 could mean medium, and _0 could mean fast. Then, whenever you want to change the tempo, you just slid a thin wooden jig on the side of the paper, line it up with where you want the timing to change, and then punch the proper holes as determined by the jig.
@flophi7 жыл бұрын
Hey, I had that same Idea. But if you'd use an arduino, why don't use binary encoding? Then you could easily get 8 different speeds by just using tree holes. And you could also use the other edge of the paper to control the volume and make a chrescendo for example. But I don't know if that would really fit to the music box, because the point is having a mechanical device producing the sound. I think it would look better if you do it mechanically. Maybe a simple mechanical counter, then the speed is determined by how many consecutive holes there are. And the adjustment could be done by a belt that runs on two cones and is shifted to one side or the other. Unfortunately I'm not at home so i can't try it out by myself.
@pinaz9937 жыл бұрын
One problem with that that I have is that you need a configuration for "no change". Otherwise, he'll have to continuously punch holes for wherever the music is a certain tempo. I think it'd be best if he only had to punch holes where the tempo changes, and thus you can't use the ___ configuration, as there's no way to distinguish it from the rest of the program. However, I was thinking of binary when I made this comment. So we are thinking along the same lines. Just, with what I was thinking, you could only use 2^n - 1 out of 2^n combos without continuous punching.
@dasy2k16 жыл бұрын
And then you could add registers like was used in the days of fairground organs where a non playing hole position changed the equivalent to stops in a manual organ

Hello :) I have created a small python program to translate MIDI data into a DXF file which should be usable for any laser cutter. The usability still needs a bit of improvement. It does not warn if holes are overlapping etc. but it has options for all the dimensions. Are you comfortable with using the command line/terminal? What OS are you using? (The video overlay looks like Logic :) I can improve it a bit and make a small GUI for it to be usable with mouse and keyboard (which I plan anyways). I will release it in the next days on github, I need some sleep :)
@tomewyrmdraconus8377 жыл бұрын
Many of them have pass-throughs. There are also relatively easy methods of creating alignment aids such as registration pins with a "key" cut out of an otherwise unused potion of the tape. Also aren't there (relatively) inexpensive consumer-grade continual feed laser cutters anyway?
@crispchris0_06 жыл бұрын
That's so cool, could you give me the link on github. Actually I have finished some basic work. I've used the Microsoft Office Excel to make Midi file transformed into proper table on which there are plenty of small circles that can guide me to punch. But it's pretty inefficient, so I need to improve the tech.

At 0:41 he shows both boxes. One on bottom showing has more contact points on the pulling wheel. Does anyone know what version of the music box this is? I happened to own one of the ones shown on top with less contact points. Not only do I HAVE to thicken up the paper with 2 layers of tape to make the paper not fold upward into the umpty pockets where contact points are on the other one to not have it play random notes, also because it has not enough contact with the paper, it simply somehow can't pull the paper forward, having it brake every now and then, it seems to do it more and more the more I play a specific roll. It's fucking annoying having to tape all these strips with multiple layers of tape since it makes it harder to poke holes in it and also takes a shitload of time. If anyone can help out or tell me more that'd be fuckin really appreciated

This is a really late reply and I don't know if its of any use anymore, but I think the 20-note music box he has is from likely Grand Illusions (www.grand-illusions.com/20-note-music-box-set-c2x21140292) I bought my music box from this site too. Can't you just use thicker paper to begin with? Like card stock.

Oh, I just realised you're working with rolls of paper with all the score markings already printed. I use a different system where my computer prints it out using a free software that came with my 30-note programmable music box (I got them at a music box museum in Japan). Unfortunately, the free software only works on Windows XP. I use an old laptop just for this purpose.
@hikikomoriarty3 жыл бұрын
I would take the pre-printed paper roll, and glue it onto a thicker paper, like a thin cardstock. Then after it's dried and flat, do all the hole marking and punching. Maybe that would work?
