With thw symbol the marbles are still playing it, just not directly touching it. I think its worth doing it whenever needed.

What if you just place a pad or foam on the cymbal itself? You can still do a direct drop, but perhaps come away with a cleaner sound?

The marbles falling on the stick still fulfills the marble machine aspect in my opinion. 😊

"The drummers out there will agree with me now" Yes, yes we do! Just like the finger analogs were crucial to making the bass sound right, that drumstick is essential to the ride cymbal sounding right. The sticks are intrinsic to the instrument, along with the technique drummers use. You can't fully capture the nuances of stick control in machine form (at least not without blowing the complexity to absurdity) but you can dial in 1-3 analogs to those techniques with the sticks and use those on the machine. And personally, seeing three sticks mounted above the ride cymbal DOES look pretty sweet and seeing them in action together would be amazing. Bad Hannes! Stop it! 😂

I like the marbles falling into the drum stick, looks cool and sounds much better. Marbles falling into the cymbol directly does also look cool but making more channels for different marble sizes might be even mor complex than desining the stick part. I also think that a coated cymbol would be nice if makes things simpler and does also sound good.

I guess if you want to activate the Drumstick by marble you can drive the stick directly by the programming wheel. So for me it would be play the cymbal by marble or drive the stick directly.

Maybe dont have a ride? Its not a jazz machine. Nobody cares if theres a ride or not. If you want a ride, have Markus play it.

Obviously drums are gorgeous, but do you *need* full sized drums? What good will accustic drums - however nice they sound - do, if micing them is a nightmare? I loved the percussion on the original marble machine and thought the miniature one on the MMX were really neat. I would suggest to watch El Estepario Siberiano's Video on triggers for inspiration concerning drums on the marble machine.

Hi Wintergatan, I have a silly idea. How about adding a marble channel with wooden balls? I wonder if they would sound closer to the wooden drumstick

Padding the cymbal itself is probably the cheapest, easiest way to alter the sound. If you cut the pads into nice shapes you can enhance the look of the instrument, too!

Does it NEED to sound like a real drumstick hitting the drum? There were previous experiments with various padding material that got close, and with a much cleaner look.

The rubber ball sounded like a solid solution, no need for extra parts, you could use those rubbery metal balls that we find inside old mouses. That also opens up the possibility for colored balls

I think one piece of why the marbles sound worse might be because they stay on the cymbal while rolling off. How is the sound if you drop the marbles as close to the edge as possible? Or if you hang the cymbals at a 90 degree angle and bounce the marbles off it?

Just get rid of the marbles altogether and use cams and levers solenoids etc. I say this because the marbles are becoming a visual aesthetic only. Who really wants to go to a gig watching marbles race around a track triggering levers ?

About the bit with Hannes saying that he thinks the marbles should only hit the instruments and nothing else (aka no drumsticks), I honestly think that drumsticks are a part of drumkits, as in they are instruments, aswell so marbles hitting the sticks is still them hitting instruments. Like to be honest an "instrument" at its core is just an object that you use to perform a task, like for example hitting drums to make noise, so I say that you can keep the sticks, they look rad as hell and it sounds way better imo

You're finding an obvious sound difference hitting the cymbal with a marble versus a drumstick. However, if you go down this rabbit hole then the same applies to all the instruments. The drums will sound better via a stick, so will the vibraphone. Where do you draw the line.

You solved the metal-on-metal problem with the vibraphone by hitting a rubber sheet, which also gave you the ability to modulate hit hardness. Why not try same thing with the cymbal?

If it's mostly about not liking the sound of the metal marbles contacting the cymbals, could you not just put a thin rubber pad on the cymbal itself, where the marbles hit it?

Rubber ball of 3 dimensions for that simbol , is the way the correct compromise. Sound betters than metal marble, simplier that with drum stick, and 3 channel for volume...the spring tension didn't change much.
