A big Transhipment hub on the Indian Mainland will be only able to cater to domestic demands(due to the geographic location far from the busiest international shipping routes and trade networks). I think vizhinjam will be larger by depth. But container handling will be more in nicobar port because of its close proximity to strait of malacca. The project has vast difference in money spend as well. Vizhinjam 6k crore Nicobar port 45k crore

Yes, Colombo port is deeper than any of India's biggest ports. So major ships dock there and transport cargo to Indian ports. But now new ports are constructed to accommodate larger carriers.
