As a person who lives in Oceania, I am delighted at this news. I am not naive enough to believe this is the end of it. It is a major stepping stone, however. I also applaud their resolve, as a collective, in refusing China's attempts at insinuating themselves, into the region. The Islands obviously looked at recent events, in Hong Kong & Taiwan, as an example, of what to expect, going forwards, had they accepted China's dictates. They also now have something they have not had previously: a bargainng position. Now is the time to force their larger trade partners to the table.

I just hope all the Pacific Island nations don’t fall for the generosity of the so called China belt n Road initiative. China is lending money to weak economic countries with strategic advantages and/or rich in resources (which that country is not adequately equipped to harvest/process. China knows that those countries cannot repay those debts and return take mining and fishing rights, take over ports and lands (to build secret sites, like in Argentina and the spy satellite tracking station). In Panama, the Reds have operating rights to both ports on either side of the Panama Canal and there are a bunch of Red Chinese living in Panama ( sleeper cells, who knows). China has taken over mining rights in some African countries already, looking for lithium and other precious Earthly materials.

I am from the Federated States of Micronesia. Yes, China is still doing business here and other Pacific islands. Such as fishing, and building infrastructures. I work for an EPA here and I don't like them a lot. I know that most of the islanders don't like them but since our politicians love money they do business with them. They take a lot of fish from our ocean. Their infrastructure sucks. They build schools and in less than 5 years it already leaks and cracked. They break a lot of environmental laws on the islands. They import chemicals that are banned and use it at our shipping dock. They didn't follow the Covid procedure. I wish they get the hell out of here. Watching this news give me hope.

As a citizen of one of these countries I feel the West shouldn't be so reassured about the Pacific countries' rejection of the Chinese diplomatic overtures. I can only speak of what I've observed in my country. I know for a fact that my country is already indebted to China through a dubious loan that is tying up a large portion resource revenue in debt servicing. Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa and Kiribati are all part of the Commonwealth of Nations. Niue and the Cook islands have pacts of Free Association with New Zealand. The Federated States of Micronesia have a Compact of Free Association with the USA. The only country that isn't associated with another country or part of a larger international economic organization is the country of Tonga. I don't think China has anything to offer for the rest to consider aligning themselves with Beijing. Tonga is the only one I could see China winning over.

I called it from the very start that the FSM (Federated States of Micronesia) would turn down China. China has screwed with FSM members for years. In particular, China has been fishing in FSM waters illegally for over 40 years. Furthermore, China has embarked on a number of individual projects with several of these countries and all the FSM members got in return was being ripped off: unfinished buildings, unpaid workers, work violations, and the list goes on. The Chinese are despised in the FSM. I've lived in the FSM and know it well. Hell, China could have called me first to hear a big fat "No".

Thank God. As a person with Pacific Islander blood in me, I'm glad it didn't go through. I was so concerned it was gonna happen but I feel relieved as hell knowing it won't. A lot of people in Samoa, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, they wouldn't wanna replace the West, even if it means more money. All my mates here in New Zealand with all those Pacific backgrounds all say the same thing. No. We don't care what those Communists are offering. Don't fall for the Chinese Money Trap. We hope one day NZ can stop trading with China but the reality is, we can't because they're our biggest trading partner. Hopefully something changes. And no, I don't have Chinaphobia as I have some Chinese blood in me too.
