The west had frozen Russian assets. So RBI is bringing back a portion of its gold in Bank of England back to India. Many Central Banks of many countries store their gold in Bank of England by paying storage fees. There is also possibility of a black swan event in near future .

Small correction - not every Central Bank has gold reserves, Bank of Canada sold ALL their gold assets in 2016 citing storage costs. Yes, really!

Despite it being ‘sold’ the same bank network still owns the Gold. US Fed, Canadian Central Bank, Indian Central Bank, etc are all subsidiary to the Rothschilds Bank of England, which Napoleon and the Austrian Painter tried to put an end to. The Indian moving its gold is simply a transfer from one vault to another in the same network, nothing really changed, sadly.

In 1991, 46 tons of gold were sold because dollar reserves were low and India needed dollars. The reason for keeping gold in London is not because of the gold market but because if it remains in the vaults in London under English Central Bank, then without taking it out one can change the ownership of the bars and get paid money. If India were to fly them, then each ingot will have to be assayed and all the shipping and assaying will be expensive and time consuming. Now that India has huge foreign reserves sitting in foreign banks, India doesn't have to pledge gold for cash. It makes sense to bring 100% back and keep in India. India can have a vault like London and can change ownership name, for example and pay Russia. Or, India can ship the gold bricks to Russia rather than clumsily facing difficulty to pay for Russian oil and arms.

The reason why a Central bank buys or gets its gold back is because its currency is weakening. The price of gold has gone up so much because the value of the currency has fallen . if brics currency was backed by gold then most of the brics currency will convert their foreign reserve US $ into gold for example write now only 10% of Indian foreign reserve is in gold and 70% in US $ , if brics currency launched india will ditch 50% of US $ and convert it with gold to get more brics currency then we can purchase crude oil with Russia and Saudi Arabia ( india purchased more then 120 billion $ worth crude oil every year ) our trade with china is more then 100 billion , so india will trade at least 300 billion $ worth item in brics currency which will orignally traded in us, this will create extra supply of US $ in international market and because of which US $ loose it value if all brics country do the same
