I remember as a child we spent summers in our grandmother's house in the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland and we would see grey squirrels catch small shrews and voles and raid bird nests for chicks. They also ate some insects..Squirrels have always been omnivores.

I believe you guys are over-reacting to the use of the term "novel." Perhaps the researcher should not have used the term - I dunno. They point out in the last line (0:43) that there is a decadal (10 year) peak in the abundance of voles. And that the novel behaviour is in relation to vole hunting and eating (versus just killing them over territory or to eliminate competition). It is likely that voles are not usually on the menu. But with a spike in vole population, the ground squirrels are taking advantage of this resource. As comments have pointed out, (tree) squirrels are omnivorous. Chipmunks are also omnivorous. Pictures of whom you have posted (which you should have not). Ground squirrels are not strict herbivores since they also eat insects. What this study might be demonstrating, is that ground squirrels are as omnivorous as tree squirrels and chipmunks but the opportunity to see such behavior in action is limited by food availability in sizes that they can manage. If they could climb trees like their cousins, their diets may very well line up exactly to include bird eggs and chicks.

Squirrels have ALWAYS been carnivorous guys! Squirrels and rats will eat ither rodents for protein and if vegetation is scarce. Even chickens are omnivores who often eat mice. Dear and cows will eat small birds and snakes. Most animals we think of as cute cuddly herbivores will sometimes eat a little meat.

It’s hard to find an animal that can’t digest it, while most plant matter requires 4 stomachs to digest. Get a grip Karen. Squirrels are just tree rats. They'll eat anything. You might not see it in the city where you live because they're well fed with bread and peanuts. In the country where there is no humans to feed them, they're opportunists. They'll eat anything that's edible, including my chicks and eggs. They'll leave a full hickory nut tree to eat an egg, I've seen it from my front porch.

This isn't true. Squirrels have always been omnivores. In Ireland many years ago we witnessed grey squirrels eating shrews and voles, as well as raiding nests for young birds and of course eating insects too. This is not abnormal behavior. They hunt for as much protein rich foods as possible. Squirrels aren't like what you see in Disney cartoons.
