Wipeout - December 1988 Episode

Here is an episode of one of my favorite game shows, Wipeout. Normally, Bob Ridgley, Jim Hackett or John Harlan would introduce host Peter Tomarken, but on this show, Peter does it himself (in third person, no less).

The show actually has THREE announcers! Peter Tomarken for some reason did the opening, thanking Bob Ridgely in the process, who was the show's actual announcer when it taped. There might have been a pick up needed on the opening sequence and Ridgely had already gone home. And the fee plugs at the end of the show were read by John Harlan!

Yes, it does sound like Peter was announcing at the opening. Probably some sort of edit or something. The actual announcer for this particular episode was a man by the name Bob Ridgely. If his voice sounds familiar, he did a lot of voiceovers promoting ABC TV shows around this time, a la Ernie Anderson. Ironically, both would pass away in 1997.

Peter's hair looked different in this show versus Press Your Luck. Want to find the one with the Sesame Street characters in it. Of course, if this is it...... (am typing this while it is running and at the beginning right now).

So "acme" is a word synonymous with "perfection," huh? I think that's why they named the company, where Wile E. Coyote (Roadrunner's enemy from those Warner Brothers cartoons, in case you didn't know) gets all his gadgets from, after it. I think it was meant to be a joke, because those gadgets were anything but perfection.

manof1005holds Well, if that's the case, then I've only got one word for Wile E.: LAWSUIT! Just make sure that the jury, the judge, and the defending lawyer doesn't turn out to be Roadrunners or Bugs Bunnies (He went after him too!), he'd lose for sure.

Where did they find these contestants. Having trouble naming common birds????? Did they intentionally pick idiots so they wouldn't have to pay out the big money? The six rodents were obvious.
