Finally, an explanation of the 568A/B situation! And also WHY you shouldn't put phone and data on one cable. Your work is fantastic. Just the right amount of detail and history, lots of pertinent information, doesn't drag, never boring. Many thanks.

Hey Ron, thanks a bunch for making this video. I just got a job within my university working on and installing classroom technology (media systems & projectors, sound, etc). More and more frequently we aren't running individual VGA or HDMI cables but cat5e instead as a digital snake. We don't connect amplifiers or projectors directly to the network, they are indirectly controlled via RS232 via the video switcher (which is networked).

Ran out of space there. Sorry for rambling. Anyway, while I'm well at home with AC wiring, power distribution and low voltage analog signals like balanced audio, I'd never done any data wiring. Your video has been great to learn the terminations and the reasons behind them. I really appreciate how much detail you included. I hope you keep making great videos like this.

The last 15ish seconds answered my question. I had previously spent 45 min looking for the answer before almost randomly stumbling on your video at 11:00 the night before the wiring job I don't know what wire config is used between jack and p panel (though it should be A) so question was can I risk mixing configs by using B p cables from jack to computer. You answer yes, so I should be good to go. I didn't quite follow explanation as to why they can be mixed, but whatever as long as it works. ;-) . Thanks for the video and your time. Very nice.

Ironically I have done over 500 ends with the A color coding... all for data per say. It was in a casino environment built in the early 1990's. I don't know what the protocol was used back then. But a few years before I started, they switched to the Bally SDS system. Used the same wire and same color coding, which was A. But it was RS-232 communications over the wires. I don't recall which wires were used and how many. But it's just ironic that we used the A for data. I just recall all 8 wires were fused at the patch panel with a 0.6amp fuse.

Correction on your 10Base-T about 3:40. 1 and 2 are not Trans and Recv. They negative and positive, and together make up transmit. 3 and 6 are receive negative and positive. Assuming it's a DTE device. If it's DCE, trans and recv are reversed. pos and neg both put out the same voltage but it's the difference of voltage that is the signal that makes a bit. This guards against EMI where both wires get hit, the difference is still maintained.

Ron Cat5 cable pairs have different twists rates. Wouldn't connecting 568A lines with 568B patch cables possibly mate two pairs that have different twist rates. We know that the link will work but do we know how the performance is impacted? Are this connections permitted by EIA standards.

One thing to remember about ethernet is tha a given pair is not connected directly to Rx or Tx, but is isloated bt a 'transformer' I have had no need to try it, but a given pair should work as long as it is connected to the appropriate coil, regarless of which color is which. This setup gives each pair electrical isolation from either end of the connection and provides a balanced load.

Excellent explanations of all but one thing around T=8:00. I may be dense, but after watching video 3 times, and reading online for several hours, I'm still not sure how how renaming the pairs 2 & 3 (or changing colors as you say) could possibly prevent the type of accidental ringer voltage NIC damage to computer! I'd love to use RJ11, but Home Depot doesn't carry it* and I'm simply trying to add some LAN cables between some rooms of my house and need to have phone as well. Which configuration (T568A or T568B) is less likely to cause equipment damage? 568A seems backward compatible with USOC phone lines, would that be safest? It seems either 568A or B should work fine for single line, but I may add a second line at some time in the future, so it looks like a pair will always overlap between data & phone and cause potential damage. *HD carries RJ11 but would have to cut a separate junction box hole in my wall for each outlet -- was trying to use the modular system that allow you to use 2-6 jacks per wall plate
@RonKipperDatacomm1
@RonKipperDatacomm1 8 жыл бұрын
+Dell Anderson Hey Dell you are right either wiring configuration will not fix the problem of the ringer voltage damaging a computer. You can find online manufacturers like Leviton that make the RJ-11 jacks but I thought HD still had them. Good luck with your project. Ron
@DellAnderson
@DellAnderson 8 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for quick response. Relieved to know I was not more confused than I thought (somewhere somehow I had gotten the idea that one difference between 568A & B was that one was safer to mix with phone. Since they're effectively the same, with neither being esp. safe to mix with phone voice, I decided to go with "A" (for home future proofing) and color code the 'phone' jacks Orange (for potential 'hot' ringer voltage) and 'Blue' (for Ethernet direct from modem) and the rest will be neutral color to mix and match ad lib from various routers and room-to-room connections (well, two rooms that is!) Your video was one of the best online (and I watched quite a few) and really helpful in building my confidence. I'm writing over the first push down Jack connections I've ever made, so something apparently went right! Thanks again for clarifying ;-)

Thanks for this video. I have a burning question and I think I know the answer, but I want to ask an expert, and you certainly are. If you are using 10 or 100 BaseT data yes you could use on cable for two computers because they only use 2 of the 4 pairs to communicate. You just have to use separate jacks on either end of the cable and terminate pins 1,2 and 3,6 using 2 of the pairs for one jack and the other pairs for the second. It should work good luck Ron

A patch cord T568A at one end and B at the other is a crossover cable that was ONCE required when connecting two like devices such as DTE to DTE, or DCE to DCE. Now days most devices are auto sensing and it doesn't make any difference.

I am a systems engineer and previously a phone guy and I prefer to wire everything in A. All the time I run into people who see A and have a stroke and spend all day changing it to B. I think it's so stupid and literally a waste of time. I prefer A because I always want my phone/voltage to be on Blue and Orange. Most if not all of these people are still lost in the past with "crossover" cables, well for the last 20 years computers have been smart enough to identify crossover and automatically correct so that doesn't even matter if you mix a whole lot of A or B up. It all still comes in as 1's and 0's on pins 1, 2, 3, and 6.

As an electronics engineer I remember the 70's and 80's and the old systems being swapped and combined, trying desperately to squeeze out speeds above 56K on the telco 32K/64Kbps switchable modems through phone lines. Seems laughable now. Hang on, I live in Australia and we are still using the old corroded water-filled pits copper telephone network! To quote our brilliant now ex-Prime Minister Tony Abbott who stopped the broadband optical cable roll-out. "Isn't the Internet just used for video games?"

I remember .ooo9 bit/baud modems, and when they cost an arm & a leg. You will get "crosstalk" out the wazoo sharing voice & data. I had some condescending jerk leave a phone off the hook & scream at me about non working phone. I wired his whole house so crosstalk would make any transmissions iffy at best. His house was a pig stye & he left a phone off the hook under a pile of clothes. Yes it was petty & unprofessional, but some people deserve it! He deserved worse. I was already quittin anyway.
