Remember, a snare is only effective if it's placed in the right spot. Search locations that are well trafficked, e.g worn paths near water, holes beaten into brush, outside of rabbit dens etc Animals behave predictably in the wild, they have a home, they have a food source, they have a water source. They frequent these locations and often have multiple of these, but if you can find tracks, it's likely they will utilize the same path again.

And skin,gut & put into the pot ,fall back into bed for a bit, & then back up for school, cycling 3½ miles. And home again, & checked the traps before doing my homework, & checked again before bed. I wonder how may 7 year old's would do that now. I had no choice, if I didn't, we didn't have meat for dinner. Different times. I'm a 70s kid. 🇮🇪

Before the prices plummeted, two friends and I ran a pretty large trap line during fur harvester season, for several years. Snares were one of several types of traps we used, and one we had a lot of success with. I've successfully placed 100s. There's an art to knowing where to put it, and how to get the critter to go through it, instead of around it. That would be a great follow up video. Topics for it could be Recognizing what critters are using which trails, and which of those are current trails. The size of the loop and height off the ground depending on what you're expecting to trap, what to use to funnel the critter into it, and how to disguise/camo it. Snares really are a GREAT tool, and I LOVE your videos. The wire used in this video is definitely an emergency only choice, though. It's too stiff. To use this, you almost have to have the "fur catcher" tab on it, but the bigger that tab is, the more likely it is to keep a critter from going through the loop. The smaller it is, the less likely it is to do it's job - which is to grab a bit of fur, so the loop stays in place and cinches down tight. If you don't get that right, with wire this stiff, the animal can escape because the wire won't cinch tight around the animal's neck. If there are things (like the fur catcher or debris from attempts to camo it) in the loop, they sometimes won't even put their head all the way through it. If it feels resistance, it will stop and try to back away. Cable, cordage, or thinner wire will cinch down anyway, but anything too stiff usually won't.

Watch for game trails. Converging game trails typically lead to water. Think about roads leaving the city. The closer to the city the wider and more travelled they are. As you leave the city roads go down to two lanes then one lane then gravel. You want to set snares where the most traffic is not the least. Two narrow trails converging onto a larger trail. The larger trail typically leads to water.

@@challengersrt5397 That sounds like a very inefficient and ineffective way to secure one's survival. If a person's odds of eating relies strictly on luck then I don't think many humans would survive.
@budgetbladereviews93612 жыл бұрын
It's not just luck. You put them along game trails. Animals like rabbits and other animals have certain paths they take all the time. You can also funnel that path straight to the snare you set. For larger game like trapping coyotes for fur. You have to use bait to lure them to the trap. Also if you don't try you don't get anything. No different than fishing or hunting you try stuff out and you figure out what works and what doesn't. Hunting, fishing, and trapping is a skill. It takes practice and knowing how the fish or animal act. It something that comes with time and practice.

I snared a jackrabbit once with wire like that. I found it dead still in the snare. It twisted and tore up the whole area before it died. Somehow, the snare wire was snapped, yet it stayed on. If I can add one suggestion. Before setting the snare, drop it into a container of boiling water to eliminate any human scent. Better still, boil some pine needles, or whatever bark the tree you attach the snare to is, to disguise the snare with a neutral scent. It always works for me. Good luck in your snaring.

For that first small loop instead of wrapping it twice around a stick, make a loop about the size of the end of your pinky finger, the. Twist it in the middle to form a figure eight, the band the top half back to the bottom half for a double loop. When the animal gets snared, that little double loop tightens around the main wire and doesn’t back off.

Personally I would loose the fur catch. It could cause the rabbit to chew on the wire and when they can easily bite through it they have a habbit of pulling on it. Just make a nice gate with a small chin up stick that lifts their head up into the snare and then they usually leap over the stck and full force into the snare. A jumping rabbit pins their ears back.
