In this video, I show you how I created this image. The technique is called wire wool or Steel Wool photography. The subject is the Corpach Wreck.
The incredible subject in this thumbnail and video is called the Corpach Wreck. It's an old Shipwreck located just outside Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland.
I created this image using a technique called "Wire Wool Photography". In this video, I explain in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide how I created this stunning picture!
🔶🔶WARNING🔶🔶 THE SPARKS WILL BE EXTREMELY HOT AND WILL EITHER BURN YOU OR WHATEVER THEY TOUCH!
I have created a step-by-step guide here: tinyurl.com/muy...
In short, follow these simple instructions:
✔ Buy a cheap metal whisk.
✔Attach a short length of string to the whisk
✔Purchase Wire Wool (0000 grade only)
✔Stuff the wire wool into the whisk (not too tight)
✔Light a tiny bit of wool and twirl!
I WOULD SUGGEST TRYING THIS BY THE SEA, AWAY FROM ANYTHING THAT COULD CATCH FIRE, AND WEARING PROTECTIVE CLOTHING! - DO NOT IGNORE THIS WARNING!
✔ Place your camera on a tripod.
✔ Set your camera to *BULB mode.
✔ Aperture to 5.6
✔ ISO to 200
✔ Attach a remote trigger and take the shot!
*If you don't have a remote, set your shutter speed to 10 seconds and go from there.
If the image is too dark, then raise your ISO
I hope you enjoy the video.

WARNING - I should have mentioned this in the video. If you try this, be extremely careful. The sparks are incredibly hot and can burn you, or worse still, you can easily set your surroundings a light. Please take care.

Ugh.....not my favorite idea! There's a wreck in Inverness Ca. that was burned down by photographers doing this. They got some great photos but ruined the wreck for all the rest of us! Look it up, the boat was named the Point Reyes.

Great shots. One thing you forgot to mention is safety. Don't wear your good clothes because you will burn holes into them. Wear a hat and gloves because sparks will hit you at some point. Never do this around anything that can catch on fire and keep a fire extinguisher or something that can put out a fire around. You picked a perfect spot on a good night. The rain made everything wet and you were near the water. I love how the sparks come off the side of the boat like a waterfall.

Did this a couple of weeks ago. I got ripped off, paid £1.29 for my whisks from a well know Bradford-based supermarket. As maybe has been commented on, it should be stressed that you need to be careful not to set fire to surroundings. Great images though Gary

Great work Gary, just a tip for next time, run a f8 iso 100-200 keep spinning even with no sparks so you can keep the shutter open longer to get your foreground a little more light. Its all Personal preference off course. Very much love your work!!!

Wow photos are brilliant well done and to do wire wool off a wreak great idea well executed!. Just a question why did you leave head torch on as it adds to pollution? We do alot of wirewool photography and switch head torches off, as sometimes they distort the shot also we switch to day light mood you get a more orange glow ! Never try a old ship though we used a umbrella to rain sparks onto that was impressive 🙂

Your going to come unstuck one day, I have been to this location and the last thing I would use to get on this boat would be some old rope hanging over the side...having said that pure entertainment with a photography lesson thrown in. Great that you have mentioned the safety rules... Thank you for sharing..

Great Video! I tried this a few years ago in front of a 25 foot man made ice formation at -20C. It was a fun night. Makes me want to try it again before the winter is over. If you do it in a tunnel or square structure it's a really cool effect as well.
